Famous Monsters’ beloved editor and founder Forrest J Ackerman is sadly missed, but as we near his centennial birthday in November and are plotting out a blowout birthday, we thought we’d gather some of his friends together to remember who he was and how he changed pop culture forever.
After a screening of the 2014 documentary Uncle Forry’S Ackermansions, Famous Monsters exec editor David Weiner gathered FM’s publisher, Philip Kim; the film’s director and cowriter, Strephon Taylor; and one of Sci-Fi’s classic authors Jean Marie Stine to share recollections of everybody’s favorite uncle.
Taylor says he was lucky to be able to tour both of Forry’s houses and was able to collect things on his tours for the film. Fans also submitted images, which gave him material he would have never had access to otherwise.
Stine pointed out that “Forry loved the mag, the puns he hated,...

The Silver Scream fest hit the ground running on a grey, rainy day in the beautiful wine country of Santa Rosa, California. Werewolves, aliens, and a life-sized Freddy Krueger figure ushered in the guys and ghouls brave enough to face the falling water.
A packed house awaited Robert Englund (the real Freddy himself!) to our ribbon cutting, commemorating the First Annual Silver Scream Fest. When he arrived, he arrived in style, sporting a glove with knives for fingers. After Famous Monsters publisher Philip Kim welcomed the throng of fright fiends to the first annual Silver Scream Fest, Englund added in his best Freddy voice, “The first and the Last Silver Scream!”
The crowd ate it up! And yours truly had front-row access to the festivities. After the ceremony was complete, Englund hung around to chat with his next victims … er, fans. He took special notice of a youngster, Johnny, who...

The first comic series from American Gothic Press, Gunsuits, will be getting an alternate cover treatment from industry talent Darick Robertson.
The first issue, scripted by Paul Tobin and illustrated by Pj Holden, hits comic shops in June with a main cover by Holden that will ship equally with Robertson’s cover. Both feature the series’ main character, Cassandra “Potts” Potter, and a glimpse of the tentacled enemies she faces. “Gunsuits allows me to draw characters and creatures that come very naturally to me, which is what makes monster stories so much fun to create in the first place,” Robertson says.
Darick Robertson is well known in the comic book world for over the top action and Sci-Fi, having co-created the enduring Transmetropolitan (with Warren Ellis), The Boys (with Garth Ennis), and Happy! (with Grant Morrison). Recently he teamed up with filmmaker Adam Egypt Mortimer for Black Mask Studios’ Ballistic.

A press release went out this week announcing the new comic book publishing division of Famous Monsters! We are incredibly excited about this development and hope our readers will follow us to the paneled page.
March 3, 2015. Los Angeles, CA: Famous Monsters, the world’s longest-running entertainment fan magazine (est. 1958), announces that in 2015 it will expand its publishing division into original comic books.
Far from being a departure, comics have long been a part of FM’s history. In the 60s and 70s, the magazine shared the Warren imprint alongisde several monumentally influential black and white imprints: Creepy, Eerie, and founding FM Editor Forrest J Ackerman’s very own Vampirella. In recent years, FM has dedicated multiple pages of every issue to articles about current comic book creators and their projects. The comic medium is naturally conducive to Sci-Fi, fantasy, horror, and all the themes that Famous Monsters prides itself in covering.

To the public, the Magic Show in Las Vegas probably conjures images of mannequin-esque models draped in the latest expressions of self by Tom Ford, Michael Kors, Diesel, and the like. But for the buyers, sellers, and manufacturers, the show represents the gateway between fantasy and reality, and a lifeblood of the marketplace. The show has grown so large that it has outgrown both the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Mandalay Convention Center.
So, as a monster kid, you may ask, “Why do I care about this show?” Because over the past decade, genre art has gone from niche status to mainstream status, and it is no less represented in wearables. Much like a department store, there are multiple departments and shows within Magic.
