Professional wrestler Axl Rotten — real name Brian Knighton — died earlier this month from a heroin overdose, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore told TheWrap on Wednesday. Police had suspected heroin use, due to the discovery of a “brownish” substance in an unmarked pill bottle found alongside Knighton’s unconscious and unresponsive body in a Linthicum, Md., McDonald’s bathroom. Additionally, Knighton had placed drug paraphernalia and a broken burnt tablespoon with a “crystalline residue” on the restroom’s infant changing table. “I have been hounded for the past ten years to put my outrageous life in book form. I have no knowledge of how to get published. My book and story involves child abuse, drug addiction, recovery, homelessness, paralysis, and losing a contract with WWE. It’s a story that needs to be told but I need someone to do it interview style over the phone. When I tell the stories you get the full picture. I firmly believe with the way pro wrestling books sell this will be a hit. I have NY Times Best Sellers Mick Foley and Chris Jericho on board to write a forward for this project. My working title is Wrestling with Heroin – Axl Rotten’s Struggle to Survive Pro Wrestling.
Thanks,
Brian Knighton aka Axl Rotten”
That email above was the first contact I had with Brian Knighton, sent exactly three months to the day before he died.

Being a wrestling fan is often hard. For those of us who have been watching this great sport for decades many of the heroes from our youth are no longer with us. They have given us memories that we will cherish forever and look back on with warm nostalgia, but we have also been forced to deal with the tragedy of their early demise. While the death of a childhood favourite is always upsetting, nothing hits harder than the passing of a close friend.
Brian Knighton, better known to wrestling fans around the world as Axl Rotten, was a close friend of mine. I didn’t get to know him until the final stages of his life, when he reached out to me and asked me to help him pen his autobiography in the latter months of last year.
In truth I wasn’t all that excited about the prospect at first,...
