Netflix has unveiled a slate of 18 titles that it has greenlit in Poland, spanning nine films and nine series.

News of the commissions comes just weeks after the streamer announced it is opening an office in the country’s capital of Warsaw later this year, which will function as a central hub for Netflix’s Central and Eastern Europe (Cee) productions.

The series include Detective Forst, from noted Polish writer Remigiusz Mroz, which revolves around a crime-solving journey across the Polish Tatra Mountains. Jakub Żulczyk’s novel Feedback is also being adapted for a series starring Arkadiusz Jakubik, which will be helmed by Leszek Dawid.

“Investing in talented European professionals is essential for the competitiveness of the European audiovisual industry” Sari Vartiainen, the Head of Creative Europe – Media Unit said. And this is one of the many purposes of the New Horizons Studio, a workshop for young filmmakers held in the framework of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
Proving this point, partner festivals, Transilvania International Film Festival, the Locarno Film Festival and Indie Lisboa sent eight of their talents to join the 2014 edition of New Horizons Studio. Among this year’s participants were the laureates of the Young Cinema Competition of the 2013 Gdynia Film Festival, Paweł Maślona with the short film “Magma” and Julia Kolberger with her short “Mazurek” as well. Hasan Serin and Müge Özen participated in the workshop as part of this year’s focus on Turkish cinema. Other participants included Nicolae Constantin Tanase, Stefano Mosimann and Jorge Jácome.
This year was the workshop’s fifth edition. This training program, supported by the EU’s Creative Europe program and the London Film Academy, included workshops on pitching, production, distribution, promotion and consultation. It is the festival’s most important training program, designed “in such a way that each panel [is] more of a discussion than a lecture” so described by Joanna Łapińska, the head of new horizons studio and the artistic director, T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. Indeed, according to Małgorzata Kiełkiewicz, the director of the creative Europe desk Poland, the New Horizons Studio has become “one of the most creative and practical training environments for young filmmakers across Europe and it has also helped to stimulate cross-border cooperation between audiovisual professionals.”
The workshop was led by experts such as David Pope, Guillaume de Seille, Gavin Humphries, the Dp/director Wojciech Staroń, the producer Małgorzata Staroń, the creative director of the Cork Film Festival James Mullighan, Marc Guidoni and Joanna Szybist, the official delegate for Cannes’ Critics’ Week Raymond Phatanavirangoon, Emre Yeksen and Gülin Üstün.
Moreover, what was interesting is that four of the Polish filmmakers attending the New Horizons Studio this year were also involved in films being presented as part of the Polish Days which presented its program of finished films, works in progress and pitchings. Indeed, Julia Kolberger pitched “Toxaemia”, her adaptation of Małgorzata Rejmer’s eponymous novel; the producer Anna Chojnacka is working at Re Studio Maciej Pieprzyca’s new feature “I’m The Killer”; the producer Zuzanna Król had a closed screening for international guests of “Performer” by Lukasz Ronduda and Maciej Sobieszczanski and the executive producer Agata Walkosz saw Tomas Weinreb and Petr Kazda’s “I, Olga Hepnarova” presented in the Works in Progress selection.

Noaz Deshe’s feature debut White Shadow was the big winner at this year’s T-Mobile New Horizons in Poland’s Wroclaw.
The International Jury - including Polish director Tomasz Wasilewski, the Austrian Film Commission’s managing director Martin Schweighofer and Cannes Film Festival’s Christian Jeune - presented the €20,000 ($27,000) Grand Prix to the Tanzanian-German-Italian co-production, which was also voted by New Horizons’ festival-goers as the recipient of the Audience Award.
Berlin-based Deshe’s tale of albinos in Tanzania was premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where it received the Luigi de Laurentis Award for the best debut.
It has since won the best director award at the Tarkovsky ¨Zerkalo¨ festival and the best feature film at London’s East End Film Festival as well as a special mention at the Transilvania International Film Festival.

The Sundance Film Festival has entered into a partnership with Poznan’s Transatlantyk Film Festival to present a selection of its titles at the forthcoming fourth edition running from August 8-14.
The new sidebar, Sundance at Transatlantyk, will screen such films as Fishing Without Nets, The Green Prince, Watchers Of The Sky, 52 Tuesdays, Difret and A Most Wanted Man, and invite the films’ creators to meet with the audience for Q&As after the screenings.
Transatlantyk was founded in 2011 by the Oscar-wining musician and composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek as ¨a new artistic platform aimed at building a stronger relationship between society, art and the environment through music and movies¨ as well as inspiring discussion on social issues.

A total of 24 young filmmakers from Portugal to Turkey will participate in the fifth edition of New Horizons Studio (July 27-30) held during the 14th international film festival in Wroclaw.
The training programme, which receives support from the EU’s Creative Europe programme, includes workshops on pitching, production, distribution and promotion.
As in past years, the majority of the participants are from Poland with others coming from Portugal, France, Switzerland, Romania and Turkey.

New Films by Przemyslaw Wojcieszek, Marcin Krzysztalowicz, Jolanta Dylewska and Andrzej Wajda, will be presented to the foreign professionals during the key industry event of the 14th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. The organizers expect around 150 guests to attend.
Polish Days is the most important industry event at the 14.T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival (24 July – 3 August 2014), where industry representatives including programmers, sales agents, producers, film funds and distributors from all over the world watch the latest Polish films at closed screenings.
This year’s edition of Polish Days will take place on July 30 – August 1. Six completed Polish films and ten works-in-progress will be shown at closed screenings, while eleven projects will be pitched to the international audience.
Among the finished films, the representatives of the international film industry will have the chance to see "15 Corners of the World" by Zuzanna Solakiewicz, which will have its world premiere in the Films on Art International Competition at the T-Mobile New Horizons Iff and then international premiere in the Settimana della Critica section of the Locarno Ff in August. Other films shown in full at the closed screenings during Polish Days include "Gods" by Lukasz Palkowski, "Call me Marianna" by Karolina Bielawska, "Performer" by Lukasz Ronduda and Maciej Sobieszczański and two films that will compete in the Main Competition of the T-Mobile International Film Festival - "How to Disappear Completely" by Przemyslaw Wojcieszek and "Calling" by Marcin Dudziak. The organisers hope to secure one extra title in the last moment before the event starts.
Projects in development presented in the pitching session include, among others, "Hungry" by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz, "I’m the Killer" by Maciej Pieprzyca, "Volhynia" by Wojciech Smarzowski, "Window" by Anna Jadowska, "Rosa" by Denijal Hasanovic and "Toxaemia" by Julia Kolberger.
This year, for the first time, two projects presented in the section will be awarded with post-production awards given by Polish Days’ new partners - post-production companies Toya Studios and Chimney Poland.

Polish Days are co-organized with the Polish Film Institute, Odra Film and the Wrocław Film Commission with the support of the Lower Silesia municipality and the city of Wrocław. New Films by Andrzej Wajda and Jolanta Dylewska will be amongst those presented during industry event Polish Days which will take place during the 14th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival.
Amongst the titles due to be screened at Polish Days are new films by Przemysław Wojcieszek, Marcin Krzyształowicz, Jolanta Dylewska and Andrzej Wajda.
The films will be presented at the industry event - which showcases Polish films to international sellers, buyers and programmers - as part of the 14th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. Over 150 foreign professionals are expected to attend.
Six completed Polish films and ten works-in-progress will be shown at the closed screenings, while eleven projects will be pitched to the international audience.
Among the finished films will be Zuzanna Solakiewicz’s 15 Corners of the world which will have its world premiere in the Films on Art International Competition at the T-Mobile New Horizons Iff.

When I saw the chance to cover the 8th Annual Austin Polish Film Festival and Poster Exhibit, I jumped at it mainly because of a Roman Polanski documentary that was slated to screen. While I knew the Austin Polish Society was a thriving organization here in Austin, my knowledge of the country itself is limited to school history books. I took my lack of information as a blessing in this case, as I went into the three-day festival ready to let the collection of Polish filmmakers and their differing views on their land and countrymen wash over me.
Friday night was geared towards young Polish filmmakers. Two in particular, Julia Kolberger and Kuba Gryzewski, both graduates of Polish film schools, each exhibited two of their short films.
