John Oliver took a left turn on Last Week Tonight and imagined a scenario where Stanley Tucci would be the host of the HBO late-night show.
While discussing Medicaid and everything wrong with the system, Oliver said the purpose of the show was not to make viewers feel good, otherwise it would be hosted by Stanley Tucci.
“If this show was supposed to make you feel good, it wouldn’t be hosted by me, it would be hosted by Stanley Tucci,” Oliver said as his reason for discussing hard topics affecting American citizens. “Can you imagine? You’d be watching an impossibly horny 30-minute deep dive on negronis right now.”
He continued, “That’s a better show. I wish this were that show. You wish this were that show. But guys, I’m sorry. It just isn’t.”

The NBC News senior Washington correspondent has been named the new anchor of NBC’s Sunday evening-news broadcast, taking the reins from Kate Snow. The Sunday broadcast will originate from the nation’s capital. Jackson’s first official day at the desk will be April 7. NBC News informed staffers of the decision Wednesday.

Democrats flipped George Santos’ former congressional seat tonight, narrowing Republicans’ House majority in a special election that got an unusual amount of attention from national media.
Thomas Suozzi, who formerly held the seat, defeated Republican Mazi Pilip, the Associated Press projected.
Some cable news networks covered the special election as a bellwether for the November election. Republicans elevated the issue of immigration and the border as the top concern in the race, something that they are doing at the national level. The district covers Queens and Nassau counties.
News network coverage of the results as if it were another night of the presidential primary. CNN dispatched correspondents to local precincts and carried live the results of the counting from individual ballot machines. MSNBC also provided comprehensive coverage with Steve Kornacki’s voter breakdown, and Fox News’ Hannity featured a box telling viewers that they were monitoring the results.

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Netflix tries muscling in on the Mission: Impossible game with the adrenaline-charged spy thriller Heart of Stone, built as a vehicle for Gal Gadot (one of the producers) to swap superheroics for a more earthbound combo of brains, tech savvy, instinct and formidable fight skills. While it’s a few notches up from the Wonder Woman star’s last action romp for the streamer, Red Notice, it feels only marginally less manufactured from the spare parts of other movies. But it gets the job done and is sure to pull solid numbers. It doesn’t hurt that Gadot has appealing chemistry with co-star Jamie Dornan.
The timing seems mildly unfortunate given that the most recent M:i installment, Dead Reckoning, hit theaters only a month ago and also revolves around a risibly named AI mega-brain, “The Entity,” which nefarious forces are angling to control.

“This is not exactly the show we expected to do today,” said Warner Bros Discovery ad boss Jon Steinlauf in opening his company’s second Upfronts presentation as a merged company.
That is both an understatement and sums up the entire week. “It’s been a very weird week,” one network boss told Deadline.
While the focus of the upfronts has been increasingly moving to streaming, this year’s event highlighted the struggle that the linear broadcast networks have on the scripted side of the business. ABC unveiled an almost entirely unscripted schedule, Gordon Ramsay cooked up another show for Fox, becoming its lynchpin, CBS announced a fall schedule that could be decimated by the strike and The CW turned to international acquisitions and reality shows instead of superheroes.
As The CW President Dennis Miller said, “the young-adult audience is not making an appointment with broadcast television today.”

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt called out Dave Chappelle’s “Saturday Night Live” monologue for “not just normaliz[ing] but populariz[ing] antisemitism” on Sunday.
“We shouldn’t expect @DaveChappelle to serve as society’s moral compass, but disturbing to see @nbcsnl not just normalize but popularize #antisemitism,” Greenblatt tweeted Sunday. “Why are Jewish sensitivities denied or diminished at almost every turn? Why does our trauma trigger applause?”
Chappelle, who hosted NBC’s “SNL” twice following major elections, once in 2016 and again in 2020, began his monologue this weekend with a written statement he had in his pocket before discussing the controversy surrounding antisemitic comments made by Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West.

Steve Kornacki’s thorough, rapid-fire analysis of election results has made him one of NBC’s most unexpectedly popular on-air figures, so it was only fitting that he ended up being part of “Saturday Night Live” just hours after calling the Democrats’ victory in the midterm race for control of the U.S. Senate.
At around 9:30 p.m. Et on Saturday night, NBC News called the Nevada Senate race for Democrat incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto, giving the Dems their 50th seat in the Senate. While the Georgia Senate race between incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker will head to a December runoff, the Democrats have enough seats to maintain control of the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tiebreaker.
Around that time, Kornacki was live on MSNBC explaining the decision to call the race for Cortez Masto and discussing the ongoing race for the House of Representatives,...

CBS News’ latest election-night coverage feature won’t be as colorful or dynamic as one of the popular electronic boards that have propelled the careers of people like MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki or CNN’s John King. But it may be exponentially more essential.
CBS will introduce a new “Democracy Desk” to its coverage of the 2022 midterm elections. Norah O’Donnell, Gayle King, John Dickerson and others may narrate the proceedings on the evening of November 8, but three correspondents will be on standby to call attention to hiccups in voting procedures; how candidates who have denied the results of the 2020 presidential election are faring in their races; and whether law-enforcement authorities are seeing any threats to poll workers.

Alex Wagner’s primetime debut on MSNBC scored 2 million total viewers on Tuesday night, which blew CNN’s 9 p.m. hour out of the water but wasn’t enough to surpass Sean Hannity on Fox News.
The show — which featured guests Mark Leibovich, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) and Joyce Vance — managed about 183,000 viewers in the key cable news 25-54 demographic. That’s compared to “CNN Tonight,” which drew a total audience of about 866,000 and 176,000 in the key demo, according to Nielsen.
It should come as no surprise that Fox News Channel continues to dominate during primetime. In the 9 p.m. slot, “Hannity” scored about 3.1 million total viewers. Of those, 404,000 were in the demo.
“Hannity” beat MSNBC and CNN combined in both total viewers and demo viewers.

Alex Wagner’s debut as MSNBC’s Tuesday to Friday successor to Rachel Maddow drew an estimated 2 million viewers.
That was a solid number for the network, and its most watched show on Tuesday. It topped CNN Tonight, which had 866,000.
Fox News’ Hannity still handily won the timeslot with 3.1 million, a figure that was more than its two cable news rivals combined.
Wagner’s debut audience was a 27 dropoff from the 2.75 million for The Rachel Maddow Show on Monday. But that is not as big of an audience decline from MSNBC’s previous Tuesday to Friday occupant, MSNBC Prime, which featured a rotating series of hosts. Maddow has been MSNBC’s top rated show, and is the only non-Fox News show to have made it to the top five cable news shows last month.

NBC Sports says 16 million viewers tuned in to watch the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, an all-time low for Olympic ceremonies on linear television.
That’s around 43% down compared to the 28.3 million viewers that watched the PyeongChang Winter Olympics opening ceremony in February 2018.
Friday’s torch-lighting in Beijing aired live on NBC and the streaming service Peacock beginning at 6:30 a.m. Et yesterday morning and was replayed again in primetime. As was the case for the Tokyo Summer Olympics last summer, the Beijing Winter Games are taking place in almost empty arenas to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among athletes, press and spectators.
Four years ago, the PyeongChang Games opening event grabbed a 16.9 household rating and 29 share, per Nielsen’s overnight numbers. That was off 8.6% from the 2014 opening ceremony in Sochi, Russia, which averaged an 18.5/30 in the overnights in February 2014.

President Joe Biden, at press conference in Glasgow, Scotland before his departure from the Un Climate Summit, predicted that Terry McAuliffe would win the Virginia’s governor’s race, but that the results would be close.
“The off year is always unpredictable, especially when we don’t have a general election going on at the same time,” said Biden, as he noted that he would be landing back in D.C. at 1 Am Et and it may not be until then until they have the final results. “I think we’re going to win in Virginia,” Biden said.
Much of the media attention for the off-year elections on Tuesday are focusing on the Virginia race, even as New Jersey has an election for its statehouse, along with mayoral elections in New York and significant ballot initiatives in Minneapolis and other cities.

Chuck Todd and Kristen Welker hope to learn a few things by anchoring an Election Night special in a year when there really isn’t supposed to be a special Election Night.
Voters won’t decide on November 2 who wins the White House or whether Republicans or Democrats gain control of Congress, but Welker and Todd will lead coverage that evening which could prove to be a harbinger for programming to come: a two-hour streaming show, “Meet The Press: Election Night Special,” on NBC News Now that will examine the ins and outs of important gubernatorial, state-level and local mayoral elections.
“We are doing an Election Night for people that really care about Election Night, that really care about why this person is winning, what’s going on here,” says Todd, in an interview.
He acknowledges NBC would likely not televise a quieter cycle like this on primetime broadcast, but...

On tonight’s episode of Late Night With Stephen Colbert, Colbert celebrated the results of Arizona’s election audit, reaffirming Joe Biden’s victory in the state.
The late-night host described this as “a crushing humiliation for the GOP,” before summoning Steve Kornacki, political correspondent for NBC News, claiming he’d been standing by since last November. Unfortunately, nearly 10 months after the close of the election, Kornacki had withered away into nothing more than a prop skeleton, patiently waiting for these results to arrive. “I forgot to feed him!” Colbert joked.
The mocking continued with Colbert ripping Cyber Ninjas, the contractor that conducted the audit. He went on to note that Maricopa County, Az will have to spend even more money (upwards of $3 million), to buy new voting machines.
The late-night host then used chess as a means to address President Trump’s continued claims of a stolen election, in...

Have a look at a sampling of them below.
Major news outlets began projecting the result about 40 minutes after polls closed 8 p.m. Pt, after Los Angeles County’s mail-in ballots came in pro-Newsom in a big way.
