Elizabeth Banks and Margot Robbie are teaming to tackle the modern children’s book classic The Paper Bag Princess.
Universal has won a bidding war to pick up the rights to the book by Robert Munsch, with Banks attached to direct the project. Banks and Robbie will produce via their respective shingles, Brownstone Productions and LuckyChap Entertainment. Also producing will be Brownstone's Max Handelman as well as LuckyChap's Tom Ackerley along with Bryan Unkeless Clubhouse Pictures and Dan Krech.

Exclusive: Homeland actress joins voice cast of family animation.
Homeland actress Morena Baccarin has joined the voice cast on Awesometown Entertainment’s animation Elliott The Littlest Reindeer.
Baccarin will play Corkie, an intrepid reporter who is determined to get the scoop on Father Christmas’s North Pole try-outs for his coveted sleigh team.
“I really enjoyed the story,” said Baccarin. “The idea that with enough perseverance and team spirit you can change the expected and surpass the norm… And it’s always a plus to be in something your kids can watch.”
Ddi CEO Jason Morning announced the development on Sunday as Baccarin rounded out the key casting alongside Josh Hutcherson, Samantha Bee, John Cleese, Martin Short and Jeff Dunham.

The 3D animation, about a squirrel who plots to pull off a major heist at a giant nut factory, features the voices of Jason Jones (Pitch Perfect 2), Will Forte (Lego Movie), John Leguizamo (Ice Age), Samantha Bee (Sisters), Jim Cummings (The Lion King), Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice and John Cleese.
The Canadian feature was produced by John H. Williams (Shrek) of Vanguard Films and Dan Krech of Awesometown Entertainment. Ross Venokur directs.

Vaughn will serve as executive producer on Home Field, about a golden eagle that helps a colony of animals save their home beneath a baseball field.
The executive producer roster includes Peter Billingsley and Victoria Vaughn of Wild West Picture Show and Dan Krech of Awesometown Entertainment, with whom Ddi has an output deal.

UK-based animation specialist Sc Films International has boarded sales rights to 3D family animation film Monkey King Returns, which is due to get a wide theatrical release in China this summer.
Simon Crowe’s Sc struck the deal with producers Flame Node Entertainment Limited.
Monkey King Returns, based on a Chinese legend, charts the story of the once powerful ‘Monkey King’ who breaks free from imprisonment with the help of a young boy to save a besieged village.
Chinese production and distribution outfit Flame Node – producer of Rollercoaster and distributor of titles including The Nutcracker 3D and The Snow Queen franchise - produces with October Animation and Haute Rout.
Director is Tian Xiao Peng, while the Chinese voice-over talent includes Tong Zi Rong and Zhang Lei.
Music comes from Raymond Wong, and features a song by Chan Kit Ee.

TORONTO -- U.S. producer Starz Entertainment on Tuesday will officially open its Canadian 3-D animation studio in Toronto.
Among the first projects to emerge from the computer-generated Starz Animation Toronto facility will be "9," the animated thriller co-produced by Tim Burton.
The 45,000-square-foot Starz cartoon factory in Toronto was formerly DKP Studios, the production house launched by Dan Krech in 1985 and sold to IDT Entertainment in 2004. IDT was subsequently sold in 2006 to Liberty Media Corp., the parent of Starz LLC.
Operating as part of the Burbank-based Starz Media division, the 3-D animation studio is headed by executive vp David Steinberg and will produce feature films, direct-to-video product and primetime and Saturday morning cartoon series.
