Gus Van Sant has jumped aboard Xavier Dolan's "Laurence Anyways" as one of the film's executive producers. He joins Lyse Lafontaine, Nathanaël Karmitz and Charles Gillibert on the film's producing team. “As an admirer of Xavier's work, it's my pleasure to join him for his first major Us release, 'Laurence Anyways,'” said Van Sant. “It's a beautiful film that proves Xavier is one of the most promising young filmmakers working today." Melvil Poupaud has replaced Louis Garrel in the cross-dresser titular lead role for French Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan's third feature film. Telefilm Canada, Ottawa's film financier, on Friday said it will hand out more than $25 million in funding to French-language movies over the current year through the Canada Feature Film Fund.
And the Ontario Media Development Corp., which hands out film tax credits to Canadian and Hollywood producers shooting locally, on Friday named Pinewood Toronto Studios chairman Paul Bronfman and four other industry players to its board of directors.
The latest round of financing from Telefilm Canada has seen $7 million going into six Quebec films, including "Bashir Lazhar," the latest feature from Writer-director Philippe Falardeau ("Congorama").
Based on the stage play by Evelyne de la Cheneliere, "Bashir Lazhar" portrays an Algerian refugee to Quebec who replaces a school-teacher who hanged herself, only to be faced at school by a group of traumatized pupils and Canadian immigration hurdles.

Scott Speedman, Bruce Greenwood and Macha Grenon have joined the cast of the indie drama "Barney's Version" alongside Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver.According to Variety, principal photography starts in Rome on Aug. 17, with Richard J. Lewis directing Michael Konyves' screenplay, based on the novel by Mordecai Richler. Robert Lantos produces.Story's title character has led a reckless life highlighted by three marriages, two children and status as a "person of interest" in the mysterious disappearance of his buddy, portrayed by Speedman. Greenwood's character is Barney's rival in love."Barney's Version" is a co-production of Serendipity Point Films and Italy's Fandango. Co-producers are Lyse Lafontaine, Domenico Procacci and Ari Lantos, while Mark Musselman is executive producing.

Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver and Rachelle Lefevre are playing Paul Giamatti's many wives in "Barney's Version," the adaptation of the Mordecai Richler novel being directed by Richard Lewis. Robert Lantos is producing via his Serendipity Point Films."Barney's" tells the story of the politically incorrect, fully lived life of the impulsive, irascible and fearlessly blunt Barney Panofsky (Giamatti).

TORONTO -- Equinoxe Films, a top player in Canadian film distribution, moved firmly into the production world Wednesday as it announced that its romantic drama A Sunday in Kigali will start shooting in Rwanda on May 27. Michael Mosca, COO and senior vp of Montreal-based Equinoxe, said boxoffice returns from the release of such indie hits as Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, which grossed around CAN$25 million ($20 million), and Nia Vardalos' My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which took in CAN$30 million ($24.2 million), helped underwrite the company's first foray into movie production. After acquiring Quebec production house Lyla Films to tap into government production subsidies here, Mosca and Lyse Lafontaine, vp of Equinoxe Prods., developed Gil Courtemanche's French-language novel Un dimanche a Kigali (A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali) for the big screen.
