Usually on Test of Time we are looking at heavy hitter franchises or big-ticket movies from the biggest of big-name horror directors. If we looked at Carpenter, we could look at things like The Thing or Escape From New York and ask the stupidest question in the world, like if they stand the test of time and what their influences would be. For Hooper, you could give Texas Chainsaw 2 a whirl or see if Lifeforce makes any more damn sense now than it did when it came out. The answers to these and many more questions in a Mount Rushmore horror creators list of credits would be yes, yes, they are quite good. Next Question. So really, when you are playing with the big boys you have to go a little deeper, look at the lesser known and often less discussed movies in their bag of goodies. Today we...

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Get Out, Us, and Nope director Jordan Peele had signed on to produce a reboot of Wes Craven’s 1991 film The People Under the Stairs (watch it Here) for Universal Pictures, and now we finally have an update to share about the project. While the reboot is still described as being in “early development”, Deadline reports that Doom Patrol and Night Sky writer Ezra Claytan Daniels has signed on to write the screenplay.
Peele will be producing The People Under the Stairs with Win Rosenfeld through their company Monkeypaw Productions. Peele and Rosenfeld previously produced (and co-wrote) the 2021 reboot of the Candyman franchise.

It was only a matter of time until Hollywood took a stab at remaking Wes Craven‘s criminally underrated and appreciated The People Under the Stairs, which will be penned by Doom Patrol and Night Sky scribe Ezra Claytan Daniels for Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions, reports Deadline.
Monkeypaw Productions will produce the film with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld serving as producers. The project is still in early development.
The original Universal Studios movie, which Craven wrote and directed, and produced with Shep Gordon follows young Fool (Brandon Adams) who breaks into the home of his family’s greedy and uncaring landlords.
There he discovers a disturbing scenario where incestuous adult siblings have mutilated a number of boys and kept them imprisoned under stairs in their large, creepy house. As Fool attempts to flee before the psychopaths can catch him, he meets their daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer...

One of the oldest horror tropes in the book, the old, dusty, unfinished basement/crawl space setting has provided a cornucopia of stories about the universal fear of what lurks in the darkest and least-coziest corners of our homes. Yet, in Wes Craven’s 1991 lesser mainstream, still beloved cult favorite The People Under the Stairs, the what’s-hiding-in-the-basement angle is reversed and subverted, as the real monsters are not the othered hiding in the basement, and the home invaders are the heroes. Three decades later, the blueprint for People has imprinted itself onto a couple of other soon-to-be cult favorites, last year’s Barbarian and this summer’s Cobweb— all of which share much more in common than merely their set-ups.

In last year’s Scream movie, which came to us from the filmmaking trio known as Radio Silence, there’s a moment where the characters realize the latest iteration of the Ghostface killer is “making a requel”. It breaks down like this: “You can’t just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore, but you can’t just do a straight sequel either. You’ve got to build something new. It’s got to be part of an on-going storyline. New main characters, yes, but supported by and related to legacy characters. Not quite a reboot, not quite a sequel.” Some prefer to term “legacyquel” over “requel”, but in a new interview with ComicBook.com Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed they’re planning to make an Escape from New York “requel”.
It was announced back in November that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are attached to direct a new take on John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi...

Update 2: It would seem that Radio Silence are indeed going to direct the new Escape from New York movie as Deadline has also confirmed the news, adding that original director John Carpenter is onboard as an executive producer.

It’s a pretty good bet that A.J. Langer isn’t widely known any longer unless it’s by those that remember her from various movies and TV shows from her younger days. Like so many other actors, once her career started to dip a bit it was easy to see how she might be forgotten. Her role in My So-Called Life might not be one of the most memorable roles to any but those that watched the

Jordan Peele is producing a remake of Wes Craven’s 1991 campy classic “The People Under the Stairs” for Universal, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Peele will produce alongside Win Rosenfeld via their Monkeypaw Productions banner.
“The People Under the Stairs” follows a poor African-American boy roped into a robbery by a neighborhood thug, who is quickly punished for his criminal actions, leaving the young teenager to survive in a house of horrors on his own. Although not particularly scary, the humorous coming-of-age tale in an urban setting, paired with creepy creatures under the stairs and a set of deranged antagonists, should be on the watch list of any horror fan.
The 1991 film, which celebrates its 29th anniversary this coming Sunday on Nov. 1, starred Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, A.J. Langer and Ving Rhames.
In related news, Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” will now open on Aug.

With the recent news that Blumhouse Productions is interested in bringing back the Hellraiser and Scream franchises it got me thinking about another forgotten gem, The People Under the Stairs. The movie is a favorite of mine, and I make sure I go back and watch it at least twice a year.
The People Under the Stairs was released in 1991 and was written and directed by horror legend Wes Craven. The story tells the story about two adults and a kid named Fool break into a creepy old house that is occupied by a crazy brother and sister, and their stolen children. Once in the house, the pair and Fool are in for the fight of their lives.
The People Under the Stairs covers a plethora of topics such as racism, social injustice, child abuse, and greed. The movie was made on a $6 million- dollar budget and grossed around $31 million worldwide.

Way to go, Rayanne! A.J. Langer, 41, is living out her own "Downton Abbey" fairy tale. The actress best known as Rayanne Graff on "My So-Called Life" is now the Countess of Devon and mistress of a 600-year-old, 4,000-acre British estate. We'd call that a so-called awesome life.

Throughout a very prolific and sometimes uneven career as an incredibly notable genre filmmaker, Wes Craven’s aesthetic often grapples with issues of revenge and adolescence, having given birth to the iconic The Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises, both series exploring notions of metatextual reinvention. Cutting his teeth with grindhouse horror titles that have since been re-made, many of his more obscure offerings have languished in the critical realm of inconsequential desolation. But it’s his 1991 offering The People Under the Stairs which is worthy of reappraisal, arguably the filmmaker’s best and most bizarre work. Campy, hysterical, creepy, and replete with a socially conscious message, it’s an early 90s cult classic that retains its power to delight and weird out.

In 1994, a show about a teenage girl came into our lives and changed them forever. While it was just as swiftly taken from us, My So-Called Life left an impact on television and on its viewers. As we near the show’s 21st birthday (Rayanne, you still should not be drinking) we thought we’d check in and see how the Chase family and friends have fared over the years. Spoiler: one of them is now a royal!
Claire Danes (Angela Chase)
We all know how Angela Chase herself turned out. Danes has enjoyed a successful career, including Emmy wins for Temple Grandin and Homeland. And our favorite angsty teen is now a mom! She and husband Hugh Dancy welcomed a son in 2012.

A "My So-Called Life" reunion is finally happening ... but there's a catch.
Wilson Cruz (Rickie Vasquez), Devon Odessa (Sharon Cherski), Bess Armstrong (Patty Chase), Devon Gummersall (Brian Krakow) and creator Winnie Holzman will gather together at the second annual Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas this June.
Sadly, stars Claire Danes (Angela Chase), Jared Leto (Jordan Catalano), A.J. Langer (Rayanne Graff), Tom Irwin (Graham Chase) and Lisa Wilhoit (Danielle Chase) are noticeably absent from the list of cast members who will be a part of the "My So-Called Life" reunion.
The coming-of-age series only lasted one season, but its legacy has lived on. "My So-Called Life," which still has a cult following, launched Danes' career and earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination at the ripe old age of 15.
"We had an uphill battle and there were a lot of elements that led to its demise," Cruz...

As Disney Channel readies its buzzy Girl Meets World spin-off, the beloved cast of Boy Meets World will come together for their first-ever reunion at the 2nd Annual Atx Television Festival.
Taking place in Austin, Texas from June 6-9, the weekend-long event celebrates outstanding television past, present and future. In typical festival fashion, screenings and Q&As will be all the rage. But what sets Atx apart is an intimate environment in which attendees can interact with the industry folks — both onscreen and off — they admire most.

If there’s one type of TV character that can appeal to younger and older viewers, it’s the TV teen.
For younger audience members, TV teens are figures to whom to relate and admire. Older audience members, on the other hand, use these characters to relive the innocence and optimism of youth that somehow gets sanded down over time.
TV teens are tricky to pull off, as they can become just as obnoxious as real teens occasionally are. But if portrayed with a relatable honesty and vulnerability, they can evolve into some of the best TV characters ever.
Tessa Altman (Jane Levy) of ABC’s Suburgatory is on her way to cementing her place among famous TV teens, but until she does, here are my choices for the top 10 teens in TV history:

Tonight's Private Practice proved that good things come to those who wait.
For starters, we’ve been waiting nearly forever for a new episode, and the Seaside Wellness doctors finally returned with an amazing installment of an already stellar season, airing "It Was Inevitable" on its new night.
Then there was our girl, Addison, who received the surprise of her life. Just as Addie has been patiently waiting, we’ve also been here all along rooting for her since her days on Grey’s Anatomy. Even though it was sometimes difficult to watch her long, frustrating and difficult journey in becoming a mother, seeing her perfectly executed moment in finding out that she was going to get her wish of having a baby was so worth the wait.
It was a wonderful moment that will certainly go down in Private Practice history. I loved how unbelievably happy and surprised Addie...

After five seasons of being put through the emotional ringer, the good doctors of Seaside Wellness are about to face their biggest challenge to date: A move from the cushy Thursday night at 10Pm post-grey’s Anatomy timeslot to the harsh and far less ratings friendly realm of Tuesday at 10Pm. One actress who’s not nearly as worried for the future of the hit ABC series as we are is actress KaDee Strickland, who we recently had the pleasure of checking in with to talk about the challenges facing Charlotte as the show’s fifth season comes to a close, why she believes her coupling with Paul Adelstein’s Cooper has transformed the talented twosome into a fan favorite and her confidence level when it comes to Private Practice seeing a sixth season. See for yourself, after the jump.

It’s been nearly a month since we’ve seen the Seaside Wellness doctors, but the wait is almost over. Private Practice finally returns next week on ABC, airing on its new night, Tuesday, April 17.
The most recent heart-wrenching installment left plenty of fans with empty Kleenex boxes as Erica’s condition rapidly worsened and Mason ran to Charlotte, breaking down after saying goodbye to his mother.
How has Mason and Erica forever changed Charlotte? What is it like to go through the huge transition of becoming a mother as an actress? And can we look forward to even more emotionally-packed episodes?
Dr. Charlotte King herself, KaDee Strickland, spoke with TV Fanatic about all this and more.
This season, Charlotte has struggled to connect and comfort her stepson during a very difficult time with Mason, while Strickland (above, right) has taken on a new and defining role as an actress.

On tonight’s episode of Private Practice, Cooper and Charlotte take Erica to Seattle Grace to meet with Derek, Lexie and Amelia regarding a very risky surgery. Breaking news: A life is hanging in the balance tonight on Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice! Ok, so that pretty much happens every week, but this time, it's a very cool crossover appearing on both shows, and the life hanging in the balance is none other than Erica (A.J. Langer), aka the mother of Cooper's (Paul Adelstein) child. I hit the Grey's Anatomy set to chat up Langer and dreamiest little sister there ever was: Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd) for all the scoop on what goes down… Patrick [Dempsey] was saying how much he loves the Private Practice crew. You might have to keep him. Caterine Scorsone: It's a pretty dope set to work on. We have a bit of a lovefest...

There's been so much insanity on "Private Practice" this season -- not the least of which revolved around Cooper (Paul Adelstein) finding out that he has a son, Mason (Griffin Gluck), from a one-night stand he had eight years ago with Erica (A.J. Langer). The new members of their family have tested Cooper and Charlotte's (KaDee Strickland) relationship, but just when everyone was getting on the same page, they found out that Erica has a life-threatening illness that will require a very special surgery.
Who you gonna call? While there are plenty of great doctors at Oceanside Wellness, creator Shonda Rhimes loves any good reason to do a crossover with her other hit show, "Grey's Anatomy." This one brings Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) to Seattle Grace to scrub in with her brother Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and his new right-hand neuro lady Lexie (Chyler Leigh).
They've got a near-impossible surgery ahead of them to save Erica.

It may be hard to visualize scruffy teen Rayanne Graff of "My So-Called Life" all grown up, but A.J. Langer has been playing Erica Warner, a mom suffering from a brain tumor, on "Private Practice" this season. The role will get a double-series punch as part of a special, two-hour "Practice" crossover with "Grey's Anatomy" on Thursday (starting at 9 p.m. on ABC). I spoke with Langer about her unexpected role, why she put acting on hold for four years and why she doesn't mind if she's always associated with a fictional rebellious teen. Back during Season 2 of ABC’s Private Practice (Thursdays at 10/9c), I was using words such as “shrill” and “steely” to describe Dr. Charlotte King, who at the time was but the chief of staff at St. Ambrose and a sometime thorn in Oceanside’s side.
My, how she’s grown.
“Who would have thought this would have been where Charlotte would go?” KaDee Strickland muses as she surveys her current storyline, in which Charlotte is helping husband Cooper (played by Paul Adelstein) deal with the life-threatening illness of his newly discovered son’s baby mama, Erica (A.J.
