I’d like to say two things about Friday’s episode of The Originals: First, it was easily the finest hour in an incredibly strong season. Deeply emotional and completely relentless, it was simply the show at its best. Bravo, all.

2.21 Fire With Fire
Episodes like this week’s The Originals are hard to pull off without feeling a bit cheap. It’s all double-bluffs and long-cons, seemingly monumental series-altering events explained and excused away by the fact that a main character only maimed and killed his friends and family for the greater good.
With this show, though, it’s even harder. The episode asks us to believe at different stages that Klaus would go on a murderous rampage, setting love interests on fire and driving an irrevocable wedge between himself and the mother of his child, and believe that he’d go that far to convince Dahlia that he’s on her side. It’s a stretch, especially so because of how much pain we’ve seen Klaus inflict on...

We’re not supposed to agree with Klaus’ decisions, no one could, but there’s a line that The Originals ordinarily refuses to cross and, even when he’s being really, really stupid, his bad decisions don’t harm the guys we like (that goes for The Originals because, we can’t forget the Aunt Jenna and Tyler’s mother incidents on Tvd).
His decision in this episode to work with Dahlia may cause him to cross this line, and that’s worrying. The difference is that, even when his logic is flawed and skewed by past experiences and characteristic paranoia, we can usually rely on his intelligence to keep things aligned.

It's Klaus versus everyone else in this week's episode of Vampire Diaries spin-off, The Originals...

2.19 When The Levee Breaks
There's a reason shows don't ordinarily choose to focus on a protagonist whose main character trait is to be unchanging. Putting a character like Klaus at the centre of The Originals can easily force the show into a corner as frustrating and stubborn as its protagonist – it's the trouble with attempting character development with a group of ancient, unyielding immortals facing up to the same issues again and again.
That's why I usually prefer it when The Originals uses outside forces as antagonists, rather than members of the core Mikaelson family, but when those outside forces affect the dynamics of that family, it's the perfect balance of everything the show has to offer. Dahlia's threat to Hope and Klaus' distrust of Freya is what was promised way...

Yes, we’ve seen him be periodically loyal to his family (especially Rebekah and Elijah) and attracted to Caroline Forbes on some sort of emotional level, but having a child has completely changed the game for him.
He’s got protecting himself down to a fine art, his paranoia ensuring that anything that could be a threat now or in the future is eliminated as quickly as possible, but protecting someone else – especially someone as seemingly helpless as a baby – is entirely different.

2.16 Save My Soul
The pace of The Originals has its pros and cons, which has been spoken about at length regarding both this show and The Vampire Diaries, and it can mean that opportunities for compelling storylines are wasted by killing a character or binning a plot point within one episode. It happened earlier in this season when Klaus' biological father lasted less than a full hour, and we can only mourn for what that could have been.

2.15 They All Asked For You
The introduction of body-switching on The Originals always had to be more than a mere convenience for the audience to buy into it. Yes, it's handy to be able to keep characters like Rebekah around even when Claire Holt is perusing other projects, or to have the option of recasting previously dull characters like Finn, but it would have been a complete waste if the show hadn't also woven its ramifications into the narrative.
This week we saw that happen with the revelation that Rebekah's new body is actually that of Eva St. Claire – child murderer and general bad guy. This leaves her with several dilemmas, not least of which is the apparent night-time excursions she's apparently been unaware of since she body-jumped.

Secrets are what keeps The Originals ticking – if we didn't have secrets, we'd really have no where left to go. The thing is, with ancient bloodlines and immortal beings, it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to accept that characters we've been watching for six years would have new things to reveal, but it's the relationships between those characters that are the endlessly fascinating part.
Season two has so far made the most out of it's newly completed Mikaelson family tree, resisting the urge to kill any of the siblings (well done show, I know that must have been difficult for you) and just wallowing in the opportunity to use their centuries-long bitterness and rivalry to aid the story along.

The Originals bids goodbye to a terrific actor in this week's episode, and does so with characteristic finesse...
This review contains spoilers.
2.9 The Map Of Moments
Losing a beloved character is tough, especially when it’s on a show as good at creating beloved characters as The Originals. There are plenty to choose from: Klaus has his fans and so does Elijah, but Rebekah always seemed to have a special allure that sucked audiences in and never let go.
Having Claire Holt leave the show full-time was hard last year, but there was a definite sense that she would be coming back, if only for an episode here and there (as has been the case). Now, that’s not a feeling The Originals mid-season finale leaves you with – Claire Holt is no longer occupying the role of Rebekah Mikaelson, and it seems that the whole body-jumping plotline was just leading us to this point.

There's a Mikaelson family reunion in this week's instalment of The Originals. Here's Caroline's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.8 The Brothers That Care Forgot
Hey Rebekah, we missed you! Please stick around, The Originals is a better show with you in it.
Yes, this episode contained the long-awaited return of the blondest Mikaelson with baby Hope in tow, and it was a reminder of just how much The Originals lost when she drove away from town last season. There were plenty of great characters to pick up the slack, and Hayley’s personality certainly benefitted from the requirement to be a new female lead, but there’s something Claire Holt gives to that character that just can’t be replaced.
But despite the fanfare, Rebekah was actually a very small part of a great episode – one that kind of had the entire generation of originals working on the same team for the first time.

Is The Originals shooting itself in the foot by introducing great potential storylines, then doing away with them too quickly?
This review contains spoilers.
2.7 Chasing The Devil's Tail
Whenever The Originals introduces something complex and interesting, ripe for exploration over several seasons and beyond, they promptly dispatch it within a couple of episodes. This isn’t a criticism, heck, it’s the kind of frantic storytelling that drew me and so many others to The Vampire Diaries franchise in the first place, but it does seem odd when you think of how television shows generally work.
The introduction of Ansel just last week, for example, turned out to be a simple device to get Klaus to be conflicted about something in regards to Hope’s safety. That makes sense – he cares about so little that it’s always refreshing to see him wrestle with something emotionally – but it does feel like a wasted opportunity.

After four episodes that, in terms of narrative development, largely amounted to the show clearing its throat, “True Blood” sets aside an hour for taking stock, giving its surviving characters a chance to appreciate what they have and how far they’ve come. In a few cases, this means that some of the actors get to collect a paycheck, and rack up some screen time, just by swaying to Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” while swigging from red plastic cups. But along the way, there are some nice moments. About half the episode is set at a richly stocked house party at Sookie’s place that Lafayette and Alcide’s father, Jackson, throw together to honor the recently departed and help Sookie move on with the grieving process. (The dialogue makes it clear that, by “recently departed,” we’re just talking about Alcide and Tara. The deaths of Hoyt’s mother,...

Sabotage won’t be loved by many, except die-hard Arnold Schwarzenegger fans. Fair warning, it’s not Shakespeare. You probably knew that already, but in case you didn’t, I have done my job by warning you. Sabotage is a cops gone bad flick, directed by David Ayer, who helped write the penultimate bad cop flick, Training Day (2001). This movie definitely has gritty street cop in its DNA. Ayer co-wrote the film with Skip Woods whose credits include: A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), The A-Team (2010), Hitman (2007), and Swordfish (2001). Woods is an action movie writer who gets to play with an action movie icon so let the bullets fly where they may.

1.17 Moon Over Bourbon Street
So, Rebecca’s gone, and she left a sizeable space to fill. This episode of The Originals, weirdly placed ahead of a four-week hiatus but set a massive two months after Rebekah’s departure, attempted to fill that space with more scheming, new factions and a concerted effort by Elijah to put a stopper in the chaos and reach an understanding. After what happened to his family a couple of weeks ago, this is just as much to save his own skin as it is to bring peace to the city for everyone else, but that doesn’t mean the treaty seen at the end of the episode is going to last for very long.

Amazing Race 24 All Stars eliminated Mark Jackson & Mallory Ervin in episode 2 tonight. Tonight's show, kicked off with the teams, learning they had to go to the Chen Clan Academy in another part of China to get their first clue for this leg of the race. From there, the teams ran into a Road Block challenge, where they had to correctly build a motorized child car and deliver it by taxi to the correct location to get their next clue. Jennifer and Caroline were able to convince Jet and Cord to give up their 2nd express pass to them, because they had no clue how to build the motor car, plus Jet and Cord thought that was a good move because Jennifer & Caroline immediately burned the 2nd express pass out of play. Meanwhile , Mark and Mallory ran into trouble when Mark left his backpack somewhere, and had to go find it.

'Originals' boss talks (spoiler) 's death and next episode: 'It's something we've never done before'
Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen tonight’s episode of The Originals, do not read on!
If there’s anything fans of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals have learned in their time following the shows, it’s that dead doesn’t always mean goodbye.
Unless, apparently, your name is Sophie Deveraux.
Yup, if executive producer Julie Plec is to be believed, we’ve seen the last of Daniella Pineda as the poor witch, who tonight was brutally killed by her own niece following the latter’s resurrection. (Read our recap here.) “I think that in this particular case,...

Adam Levine may be People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2014 — yep, Carson Daly confirmed that the rumors are true — but the Maroon 5 singer got relegated to third-place status on The Voice‘s Season 5 Top 10 results telecast.

And winning the hour? Well, that crown went to Team Xtina — the Lady Aguilera along with her two remaining singers Jacquie Lee and Matthew Schuler — who delivered a scintilating Jackson sibling medley of...

This interview contains Arrow season one spoilers.
He may have been a late addition to Arrow’s first season, but Colton Hayne’s Roy Harper has quickly become one of the main reasons to come back for season two this October. Still an enigma in a show becoming more superhero-heavy as it evolves, we spoke to the actor about clearing up the Speedy/Red Arrow issue (spoiler: he couldn’t), his relationship with Thea, whether Roy’s going to join Team Arrow, and the real reason he left Teen Wolf ahead of its third season.
The Arrow season one finale was obviously very dramatic, how has the fan reaction been since it aired?

Although hampered by Harry Potter similarities, Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters is a brisk, entertaining fantasy sequel, Caroline writes...
Some sequels arrive in cinemas with so much buzz and chatter attached to them that it’s hard not to be disappointed with the eventual experience, but there are others that arrive without the slightest bit of fanfare or, well, interest. Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters seems to belong to the latter camp, and benefits from the complete lack of preconception or expectation from anyone other than hardcore fans of the book series on which the film series is based. It’s the first sequel to 2010’s Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief, but have the intervening years fostered something a bit more interesting?
Yes and no, as whatever the movie gains from the distance between it and the Harry Potter movies, the abundant parallels take away again.

The first time you meet a girlfriend's parents can be a nerve-racking moment, even if you're famous. That was definitely the case for "Fringe" star Joshua Jackson, upon meeting the mother of his longtime girlfriend, actress Diane Kruger.
During an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Kruger recalled the first time she took Jackson home to meet her mom. "I'm from a very small village in Germany, so I don't usually bring boys back unless they're somewhat serious," she says. The meeting was going well, with Diane acting as a German-to-English translator, until her mom presented Josh with a folder filled with clippings about him, including his mugshot (pictured above).
Jackson was arrested at a Caroline Hurricanes hockey game after an alleged drunken quarrel with a security guard. He was charged with assault and being intoxicated and disruptive. The charged were dropped and he agreed to alcohol education classes and 24 hours community service.

Let’s ruminate on where some of our favorite TV shows will end up in 2013.
American Horror Story
The show is a little bit of a trainwreck, so let’s take it all the way. I want the next season to be set in a summer camp in 1981. Yes, fans will complain it is a Friday the 13th/Sleepaway Camp/Cheerleader Camp/The Burning/etc. knock-off, but so what? Jessica Lange could be the head of the camp, and in addition to a machete-wielding maniac on the loose, you could have a very human bullying story, and a very non-human “creature in the lake” story. Maybe Jessica Lange is in cahoots with the maniac and they are serving the campers the flesh of the victims.
My second choice for the next American Horror Story? A haunted roller disco, circa 1974.
Dexter

I saw the Twilight marathon last night. I saw all five movies of the saga and furiously wrote down my thoughts in real time for you to read. I am not a Twilight fan, I haven’t read the books and up until last night had not seen any of the films. (Okay, okay, I saw the Breaking Dawn – Part 1, but I wasn’t paying attention and I didn’t know who was who or what was going on. So I’m saying it doesn’t count.) I’m not some kind of cynic ready to tear Twilight a new one. I love almost any movie I see in the theaters. I almost wept when Cher sang “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me” in Burlesque when I saw it opening night, so yeah, I am not a hard sell when it comes to the magic of the movies.
