“American Gladiators” aired in the 1990’s, but the competition still remains a phenomenon decades later. Last month, ESPN’s “30 for 30” explored the show, and now, Netflix is getting into the game.
Netflix’s five-part docuseries, “Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of ‘American Gladiators,” dives into the hit, chronicling the meteoric rise and sweeping impact the superhero-like athletes had on both fans across America and their “average Joe” competitors.
Co-directors Jared Hess and Tony Vainuku were fans of “American Gladiators” as teens, so it was natural to revisit the TV show when Netflix presented the opportunity. In their series, the filmmakers explore the good, the bad and the ugly, bringing audiences insight through access to executives who greenlit the production in the ’80s, original crew members and gladiators, including Nitro (Dan Clark), Storm (Debbie Clark), Diamond (Erika Andersch Bunker), Laser (Jim Kalafat), Ice (Lori Fetrick), Zap (Raye Olson), Blaze...

Washington intern Chandra Levy disappeared in May 2001, launching an investigation that gripped the nation -- especially when Chandra's father alleged that she had been having an affair with then-congressman Gary Condit of California. (The congressman was never named an official suspect in Chandra's case.) Chandra's fate remained a mystery until May 2002, when her body was found in Washington's Rock Creek Park. But was she murdered -- and if so, who had killed her?
In May 2009, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Ingmar Guandique, was charged with Chandra's murder and later sentenced to 60 years in prison. In this clip from a new "Oprah: Where Are They Now?", Chandra's parents, Sue and Bob Levy, confess their true feelings about Ingmar's conviction. Sue recalls her experience in the courtroom during his sentencing. "I pointed my finger and asked him if he killed my daughter -- and I asked him to look at me,...

'Vampire Diaries': Producer Julie Plec on Katherine's whereabouts, Damon's devastation, Grams' death
During Saturday night's "Vampire Diaries" event at PaleyFest, Korbi TV collected a wealth of "Vd" information.
Not the kind that comes in a pamphlet at your local Planned Parenthood, no.
The kind that comes from the panel, from the screened episode and from the fan-tablulous producer Julie Plec.
When I spoke with the cast, prior to speaking with Plec, they were all on their best behavior. Not one of them would even cop to the fact that Katherine is indeed alive.
Julie, however, gave us the tease we were looking for (which will have us tuning in every Thursday from March 25th 'til forever): "Katherine is not only alive, but she is off and harlot-ing it up somewhere. Last seen in Chicago, she's probably in Bora Bora right now. She's kind of a little slut if you think about it."
Heck yes, that's what we wanted to hear. Plec...

Documentary filmmaker Rj Cutler, who directed the Anna Wintour/Vogue profile The September Issue, is heading from high fashion to the Hamptons social swirl. Cutler successfully pitched Warner Bros on the feature film Au Pairs, an adaptation of the Melissa de la Cruz novel about three teenage girls from different socioeconomic backgrounds who work as nannies for a wealthy family in the Hamptons one summer. The girls balance their domestic duties with their suddenly interesting social lives. The pic is being produced by Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen of Flower Films and Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy of Alloy. Liz Garcia wrote the [...]...

Whether you regard American Gladiators as a positive or negative piece of televised American history, it’s fair to say that the show evolved favorably with every season; keeping the best challenges and ditching the weakest in favor of new ones. The original series boasted itself as a proving ground for the up and coming athletes of its time. The commentators take great pride in talking up the individuals who appear (as did every iteration of American Gladiator), but at this early stage there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that American Gladiators is a legitimate arena to prove one’s athletic mettle. I’d like to think that now we know this isn’t quite the case – and if the newest, short-lived incarnation of American Gladiators is any indication, we’re still quite aware of the show’s sole value to American culture: pure entertainment.
