Katy Perry dropped a new single and music video on Friday, May 15: “Daisies,” an empowerment anthem about following your bliss regardless of those who doubt you (watch above). But after some historic achievements on the charts and multiple diamond-certified singles, there are still some doubters who haven’t quite jumped on the bandwagon yet: Grammy voters. She has been nominated 13 times without a win.
Perry first broke out with the hit songs “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold,” which earned her consecutive Grammy nominations for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009 and 2010. Then in 2011 she made an even bigger splash with an Album of the Year nomination for “Teenage Dream.” The following year she was up for Record of the Year for “Firework.” And in 2014 she scored her first bid for Song of the Year for “Roar.” Ironically, the only general field category she was never nominated in was Best New Artist.

‘Saint’ be praised! Sara Bareilles finally won a Grammy on a night of redemption for overdue artists
She did it! Sara Bareilles finally won a Grammy on her eighth nomination in 11 years. On Sunday afternoon she claimed Best American Roots Performance for her song “Saint Honesty” from her latest album “Amidst the Chaos” (listen to it above). It was her first nomination in the American Roots field, and it was her only nomination this year, but it was enough to finally end her losing streak after more than a decade.

But it wasn’t just the Grammys where Bareilles couldn’t get arrested. She has also been nominated for two Tonys and three Emmys, to no avail. Industry groups have admired her enough to nominate her, but up until now she hadn’t gotten a single major trophy from her peers. She even sang about it when she hosted the Tonys in 2018 with Josh Groban, who has also earned Tony,...

Sara Bareilles is back at the Grammys with the eighth nomination of her career, but it’s the first in the Americana field, where she’s up for Best American Roots Performance for “Saint Honesty,” a song she co-wrote with Grammy-winning country songwriter Lori McKenna. Will the change of scenery finally win her her first Grammy 11 years after she broke through at these awards?
Bareilles first made the cut in 2009 when she was a newcomer nominated for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her breakthrough hit “Love Song.” Then came two more pop performance nominations for “King of Anything” (2011) and “Brave” (2014), plus a surprise Album of the Year nom for “The Blessed Unrest” (2014).

Morten Lindberg isn’t a household name, but he’s the most overdue individual in Grammy history. The Norwegian sound engineer and classical music producer is nominated twice this year, which brings his career total to a whopping 28 bids. But he has yet to win in any category, which currently makes him by far the most nominated artist without a win. Can he finally end that losing streak?
Lindberg has amassed his nominations relatively quickly. His first was in 2007: Best Surround Sound Album for Ensemble 96‘s “Immortal Nystedt.” Since then he has earned at least one Grammy nomination every single year except 2008, including Producer of the Year (Classical) in 2015, 2018 and now 2020. But most of his nominations have been in the race for Best Surround Sound Album, which alone accounts for 15 of his bids.

What will it take for Bjork to finally win a Grammy? This year she’s nominated for Best Alternative Music Album for “Utopia.” It’s her 8th nomination in this category and her 15th nomination overall, but she has never won anywhere. If she loses again she’ll be tied with guitarist Joe Satriani as the fourth most nominated artist in history without a win. That unfortunate record is currently held by classical producer and engineer Morten Lindberg (26 nominations), followed by Snoop Dogg and Brian McKnight (17 nominations).
“Utopia” is Bjork’s ninth studio album. It was released to critical acclaim in November 2017, and it was ranked among the best albums of that year by The New York Times, Pitchfork, Slant, Slate, The New Yorker and more. But it only reached number-75 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, so she might be disadvantaged yet again this year against the bigger hits in...

R&B veteran Ledisi has released eight albums over the last 18 years and accumulated 12 Grammy nominations in that time, including Best New Artist in 2008. Three of those nominations will be decided on Sunday, January 28, when the 2018 awards are handed out. But she’s still waiting for her first victory. Can she finally prevail to avoid joining the list of the most nominated artists of all time without a win?
The ignoble record is currently held by producer and sound engineer Morten Lindberg, who has contended 20 times without winning. He’s closely followed by Snoop Dogg and Brian McKnight, who are tied with 17 unsuccessful nominations apiece. If Ledisi leaves empty-handed this year and ends up with 12 losses for 12 nominations, she’ll be tied for 12th place with polka artist Lenny Gomulka, pianist Peter Kater, rapper Busta Rhymes, and legendary singer Diana Ross. That’s not bad company to be in and...

Just when you thought you’d seen everything… and who says there aren’t any original ideas left.
Thanks to reader Clint for the heads-up on this one, ’cause I’d never heard about it… until today.
Yes, it’s really called Gayniggers From Outer Space – spelled just like that – a 1992 30-minute film, directed by Danish filmmaker Morten Lindberg, and described as a satire of blaxploitation and science fiction films.
Lindberg is/was supposedly one of Denmark’s most famous comedians; he’s white, by the way.
The plot?
Gayniggers from Outer Space tells the story of a group of intergalactic homosexual black men from the planet “Anus” who discover the presence of female creatures on planet Earth. Using guns which shoot deadly rays, they proceed to eliminate females one by one from Earth, which ensures them the ecstatic gratitude of the previously oppressed male population. Before leaving the planet,...
