Chinese actress Zhou Dongyu, who is in Cannes with Anthony Chen’s Un Certain Regard title The Breaking Ice, has had a fairytale career trajectory.
Although she had no desire to act, she was plucked from obscurity by Zhang Yimou when still a high school student in 2010, and became one of China’s most respected young actresses, with a string of award-winning films.
She agreed to star in The Breaking Ice as soon as Chen called her and before he’d even written the script. She’d worked with him before on short film The Break Away, part of Neon-produced anthology The Year Of The Everlasting Storm, which Chen had directed remotely during the pandemic.
“He called and said he wanted to shoot a film in China, quite quickly over the winter, because he had a month free when another project was postponed,” Zhou tells Deadline. “I agreed immediately...

Taiwanese films “A Sun” and “Detention” were the big winners of Taipei’s Golden Horse Awards on Saturday. Wang Xiaoshuai’s “So Long, My Son” was the standout title at mainland China’s rival Golden Rooster Awards, held the same evening.
The two events collided because of a pro-Taiwanese independence acceptance speech at last year’s Golden Horse Awards, which are usually considered the most prestigious film prizes in Chinese-language film. That prompted Beijing to ban mainland industry players from attending this year’s ceremony in Taiwan, threaten to cut off access to China’s enormous movie market for any others who chose to participate, and schedule its Golden Rooster ceremony for the same evening.
The rival events offered a revealing contrast both in their choice of winners and the comments by some of the winners, who at the Golden Horse ceremony felt free to make politically oriented statements that...

“Hot Summer Days” is the first Chinese-language film produced by 20th Century Fox in its then seventy-five-year history. Packed with stars hailing from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan, it’s the kind of ensemble romantic comedy that American audiences have been eating up for decades. Nevertheless, this Chinese take on the genre possesses just enough redeeming qualities to elevate it—albeit only slightly— above the pack of formulaic rom coms churned out by movie studios around the world. Gorgeously shot with several excellent performances, “Hot Summer Days” is a date movie of epic proportions, as we’re treated to a whole stable of good-looking actors— often glistening with sweat—as they try to find love in the sweltering heat of summer.
In Hong Kong, we meet Wai (Nicholas Tse), whose air conditioning repair shop is experiencing a much-needed boom in business during the oppressive heat wave.

Broader range of local hits over the summer helped drive China box office to $6.79bn from Jan-Aug.
China’s box office grew by 17% to reach $6.79bn in the first eight months of 2018, following a summer in which Hollywood titles may have been sidelined, but local productions started to show greater depth and diversity.
According to figures from Chinese consulting firm EntGroup, local films grossed a combined $4.5bn (RMB30.42bn) during January-August 2018, an increase of 46% over the same period in 2017. This gave local films a market share of 66%, compared to 53% for the first eight months of last year (using current exchange rates). Based on these figures,...

“Us and Them” is the perfect love story of passion for teenagers, but also for adults. I must admit that the romantic genre is not one I usually pay attention, but if the film is good, I don’t care about the genre or where it comes from. In this case, we are talking about a Chinese film directed by Rene Liu and starring mainly Jing Boran and Zhou Dongyu.
“Us and Them” is available to watch already in some countries on Netflix”
The story starts on an airplane. Jianqing meets Xiaoxiao during a plane trip, a woman he is familiar with . The two look at each other from a distance and that’s when the memories of the past come to life. The story takes us back 10 years before this event, when these two young people met, during a long train trip. From there on, a very special friendship emerges between the two teenagers.

Netflix has picked up multi-territory rights to “Us and Them” a Chinese romance that is currently topping the China box office.
The film is the directorial debut of Taiwanese actress Rene Liu. It features male heartthrob Jing Boran and rising female star Zhou Dongyu in a story of strangers who meet on a train as they head home for the holidays.
Appropriately enough, “Us and Them” was released in time for the May Day holiday. It has now earned $191 million after nine days on release.
That box office total has been disputed as the distributor-producer Maoyan has been accused of selling deeply discounted tickets and inflating its success. The producers of another film “Screaming Live” are now reported to be suing Maoyan for unfair competition, alleging that their film was unable to secure enough screens, due to Maoyan’s tactics. The fervor of the previous May Day holiday quickly died down at the Chinese box office. That left holdover titles “Us and Them” and “A or B” alone at the top of the charts.
Romantic drama, “Us and Them,” directed by Taiwanese actress Rene Liu, earned $25.8 million on its second weekend of release. That lifted its 9-day cumulative score to $191 million.
Behind it, crime drama “A or B” detected a further $11.1 million in its second weekend. Its total after 9 days grew to $48.0 million.
“Rampage” remained the top Hollywood title for another weekend. It added $7.82 million for a cumulative of $150 million after 24 days in theaters. It narrowly exceeded the score for India’s “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,” which was the top-ranked new release of the week.
The South Indian action film played out on 9,500 screens, including some 500 IMAX venues, and was the third placed film on Friday. But it drifted to fourth on Saturday and Sunday.

Romantic drama, “Us and Them” dominated the Chinese box office over the weekend ahead of the May Day week holiday. But questions surround the scale of its victory.
Unusually, most new films opened on Saturday instead of the more typical Friday. That reflected the extended working week ahead of one of the most important holiday period of the year in China. At least six new films were released, and over three days the top ten included 17 different titles.

Hong Kong director Jingle Ma follows up “Love You You” and “Mulan” with more cinematic popcorn in the glossy form of “Speed Angels”. In this latest bid for commercial success and mass appeal, Ma takes the high concept premise of putting good looking actresses behind the wheels of fast cars and throws in pretty much every soap opera style twist imaginable, making for a wacky mix of road racing and tears. The film certainly deserves credit for pulling together an impressive trio of leading ladies, headlined by Rene Liu (“Starry Starry Night”), Tang Wei (“Wu Xia”) and Cecilia Cheung (“Legendary Amazons”), as well as a pan-Asian supporting cast that includes pop star and real life racer Jimmy Lin (“If I Were You”), popular Korean television actor Han Jae Suk (“The Great Merchant”), and Kitamura Kazuki (“Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie”) and Tanaka Chie (“Cape No.7”) from Japan. The film kicks off with...

As can be guessed from its title, “Love in Space” is a romantic comedy, which sees directors Tony Chan and Wing Shya following up their surprise 2010 hit “Hot Summer Days” with more of the same. Boasting Fruit Chan back on board as producer and a glossy budget courtesy of Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox, the film is headlined by a trio of top female stars in Rene Liu (“Run Papa Run”), Guey Lun Mei (“Taipei Exchanges”) and Angelababy (“Hot Summer Days”), with high profile male support from Eason Chan (“Lover’s Discourse”), Aaron Kwok (“Love For Life”) and Jing Boran (“Hot Summer Days”). The film follows the amusing romantic adventures and misadventures of the three Huang sisters and their mother in a series of intertwining subplots. Lily (Guey Lun Mei) is a budding artist in Sydney whose love life is complicated by her obsessive-compulsive fear of germs – put to the...

While I doubt anybody had any serious expectations for Jingle Ma's Speed Angels, the premise itself surely could have yielded something more trashy and entertaining than this cinematic lemon. The story of three female racing drivers, whose personal lives overlap and intersect more often off the track than their cars do on it, is a terminable bore that struggles to get out of first gear. For every minute of onscreen racing, we must endure half an hour of insufferable melodrama, making a two-hour movie feel like Le Mans.Bing (Rene Liu) and Mei (Cecilia Cheung) are best friends as well as teammates in the Speed Angels all-girl motor racing team. However, on the day of her wedding, Bing discovers that her Japanese fiancé, Asano (Kitamura Kazuki)...

Well, it’s actually 35 seconds long, but I’d like to think that you get the idea. Below you’ll find the latest trailer for director Jingle Ma’s attractive racing flick “Speed Angels”, a Chinese motion picture that I am shamelessly excited to see. The film stars Tang Wei, Cecilia Cheung, and Rene Liu, three lovely ladies who find themselves at odds during a particularly intense championship race. Think “Days of Thunder” meets Corey Yuen’s “So Close”. Minus the martial arts, of course. If you missed the previously trailer, I’ve included that one, too...

Veteran filmmaker Jingle Ma has a brand new action-packed cheesefest on the cinematic horizon, a high-octane racing flick called “Speed Angels”. The film stars three of China’s hottest actresses, namely Tang Wei, Cecilia Cheung, and Rene Liu, all of whom portray drivers competing against one another in some sort of popular racing event. It’s colorful and flashy, so I’m all over it. In order to prepare you for the ensuing awesomeness, the promotional team has dumped some new images on the media-minded masses. All of the goodies have been scientifically embedded below. If you missed the trailer, you can check that out, too...

Hot girls and fast cars — it’s a goofy little recipe that makes perfect cinematic sense. Below you’ll find the first trailer for veteran director Jingle Ma’s upcoming racing flick “Speed Angels”, an effort which stars Tang Wei, Cecilia Cheung, and Rene Liu. There isn’t too much information floating around about this project at the moment, but you really don’t need to know much about the flick beyond its stars, its cars, and the fact that it opens in China very soon. The embedded clip is just a minute long, but it does a fantastic job of setting the tone for things to come. As long as it’s better than, say, “Driven”, chances are it’ll be a damn good time. “Speed Angels” opens on December 28th,...

As we shift into top gear for the busiest season in the Chinese movie calendar there are a number of key productions all vying for pole position. While it may not have the dramatic clout of Zhang Yimou's Flowers Of War of Derek Yee's The Great Magician, Jingle Ma's Speed Angels has the novelty of seeing three of the biggest female stars currently working in China going head to head on the motor racing circuit. Tang Wei, Cecilia Cheung and Rene Liu are the eponymous beauties in what looks to be a rather entertaining slice of silliness. The film also stars Jimmy Lin and Chie Tanaka and opens on the mainland on 2nd December. You can check out the trailer below, and while there aren't...

Following up last year's Hot Summer Days, directors Tony Chan and Wing Shya return with Love In Space, another ensemble romantic comedy featuring a host of exceptionally good-looking people playing out cripplingly clichéd tales of love for our entertainment. Co-financed by Fox International and China's Huayi Brothers and produced by Fruit Chan, the film boasts top drawer production values and takes place in as far flung locations as Beijing, Sydney and, um, the surface of a heart-shaped moon. The story focuses on the romantic trials and tribulations of three sisters - Rose, Lily and Peony - and their doting mother, Mary, who keeps a close eye on them, wherever in the universe they may be.Rose (Rene Liu) is a strong, determined and stubborn astronaut who...

When she meets Lee, a similarly introverted soul, Mei feels she has met her soulmate - and the couple plan their escape.Starring Xu Jiao (CJ7, Mulan) as Mei, Rene Liu and Harlem Yu as her parents and boasting an appearance by Kwai Lun Mei (possibly as an older version of Mei), Starry Starry Night already looks to be a promising sophomore feature. “Mr. and Ms. Single” is the latest offering from Hong Kong director Patrick Kong, and is another in his ongoing line of modern Chinese urban romances, following the likes of “Marriage with a Liar”, “Love is Not All Around” and others. The film was his 10th, and both his first made especially for the lucrative Mainland market, and the first which he didn’t actually write himself, being based on a popular stage play, with a script from original writer Ha Zhi Chao and Ru Xiao Guo. The film does represent Kong’s next step up the commercial cinema ladder, and appropriately sees him bringing together an impressive big name cast, including popular actor singer Eason Chan (recently in “Lover’s Discourse”), Rene Liu (“Hot Summer Days”), Bai Bing (“Let the Bullets Fly”) and Harlem Yu (“Butterfly Lovers”). The plot covers some familiar rom-com territory, with Eason Chan as the rather dowdy Cui Minguo,...

Matrimony (2011)
As a fan, first and foremost, of genre cinema I cannot overstate the importance of Tartan in bringing Asian horror to the West. If you think of all the important Asian horror flicks over the past decade or so chances are Tartan released them in the UK and Us. Of course, most of these ended up getting a shitty remake but that is an aside to the fact. This made it all the more upsetting when in 2008 Tartan went into administration. Fortunately their library of movies was purchased the Palisades Media Group and Palisades Tartan was born.
The latest release from the new company is Matrimony, or The Matrimony as it is also known, a Chinese movie from 2007 that adds a little period piece action to the traditional style of Asian ghost story. Don’t worry though, this isn’t a long-haired style ghost story that has been done to death,...

Matrimony is a dramatic, supernatural horror film made in mainland China in 2007, but Palisades Tartan / Asia Extreme is bringing it to the states on DVD & Blu-ray on July 26th 2011. The film is quite beautiful. Too beautiful for it's own good in some ways. The beauty of it immediately raises your expectations. At it's core it's a standard, but very well made ghost story. Sure, it lacks originality, but that does not mean it's not a great film to watch.

Hong Kong cinema star Andy Lau stars in director Feng Xiaogang's crime story about con-artist couple Bo (Andy Lau), an expert thief from Hong Kong, and Li (Rene Liu), a beautiful thief from Taiwan. The pair travel across China plying their crooked trade, that is until Li decides to break free from her criminal lifestyle, and from Bo. Which is where she meets Dumbo (Wang Baoqiang), an unsuspecting hick returning to his hometown to find a wife and get married. As luck would have it, he also happens to be carrying his life’s savings with him. So they board a train, along with an assortment of thieves and wrong doers, headed by Uncle Li (Ge You) and his gang of misfits. Trust turns to mistrust, loyalty turns to deceit and Andy Lau’s hair goes from unintentionally hilarious to shampoo commercial perfection in no time at all.
