NEW YORK -- Miramax Films on Monday wrapped up a multiterritory deal to acquire writer-helmer Christophe Barratier's Les Choristes, a French-language period piece about a music teacher who finds himself assigned to a correctional boarding school. The deal had been expected as the Berlin International Film Festival's European Film Market wound down last week, and rumors spread that Miramax would surely pick up North American rights (HR 2/13). But the mini-major didn't stop there, also taking Latin America, Australia and New Zealand territories from seller Pathe International. Penned by Barratier with Philippe Lopes-Curval, Choristes is set in 1948 and centers on the teacher's mission to change his pupils' lives by acquainting them with the magic and power of music after he is stunned by his new school's harsh realities.
