Promenade, a new film from John Jencks, has begun production in Brighton this week. More on the film below.
We’re hearing rumbles that a new British film is heading our way sooner rather than later from director John Jencks. The Hippopotamus director is helming Promenade, a Brighton set whodunnit, next and the project has just started filming, we hear.
The announcement comes with an ambiguous tagline: “50 Cast, 12 Stories, 1 Plot. No Heroes.” Colour us intrigued.
Here’s a synopsis for the film: In Brighton on the South coast of England, sharpened by the sting of sea spray, and mellowed by numinous light, a tight-knit community of oddballs and heart-felts live together in a tatty old mansion, the Fletcher Apartments. When a golden feather, the priceless antique mascot of the building, unexpectedly disappears, the residents have a mystery to solve. Will they find the talisman that previously bound them together, or will their community,...

The Day Today was making Fake News its business long before it was even a twinkle in Donald Trump’s eye. Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris’ TV translation of their On the Hour BBC Radio 4 series parodied the gravely serious, scare-mongering, hyperbolic news style of the early 1990s with absurd, nonsensical headlines: “Portillo’s teeth removed to boost Pound. Exploded cardinal preaches sermon from fish tank. And where now for man raised by puffins?”
With a comedy team including Steve Coogan (who road-tested Alan Partridge on TV for the first time here), Rebecca Front, David Schneider and Doon Mackichan, the show didn’t aim to hoodwink its audience or even the public figures in the news, the target was the news itself. And if speaking truth to power is the essence of good satire, then the target doesn’t come much more powerful than the media, and satires don...

It's hard to believe that Good Omens has been on the air since 2019, yet only two seasons have aired.
The buzzy Prime Video comedy most recently aired in July 2023, and now, there are questions about a potential Good Omens Season 3.
Below, we've rounded up everything there is to know.
Good Omens Season 3 Renewal Status
Despite last airing several months ago, Prime Video has yet to confirm whether there will be more adventures for Aziraphale and Crowley.
In October 2023, Deadline hinted that a renewal would soon be made official.
The outlet said that options on the cast, led by Michael Sheen and David Tennant, had been picked up.
That typically means that a show is in active negotiations about a pickup.

The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book, Good Omens, became a big hit when the show hit Prime Video. This summer saw the release of Good Omens 2, the follow-up to the successful first run. Michael Sheen has become the face of the character of Aziraphale, but Gaiman has recently revealed in a Tumblr post that he originally had another actor in mind as the angel. A fan asked him if anyone else came close to playing the roles of the duo. In a response, it was unveiled that Sheen was actually intended for Crowley, and Gaiman wanted Hugh Grant to embody Aziraphale.
ComingSoon.net reports that Gaiman explained, “I remember spending a lot of time pondering who Aziraphale could be back when Crowley was going to be Michael, and I think Hugh Grant was a leading contender in my head, but then somewhere in the middle of writing episode...

Long ago in a time before the pandemic (2019) Amazon released a show based on Neil Gaiman’s book Good Omens. Intended to be a limited series, the show was a hit so they opted for even more. However, talking to stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen, multiple seasons were always in the cards. Despite Gaiman’s material taking up the first season, the writers plotted along much further. So while I had very limited time to be able to talk with the two gentlemen, they were a wealth of knowledge. Make sure you check out my conversation with Michael Sheen and David Tennant above. Note: this was recorded before the SAG/AFTRA strike.
Good Omens plot:
A mystery that takes us from before The Beginning, to biblical times, grave robbing in Victorian Edinburgh, the Blitz of 1940s England, all the way through to modern day, Good Omens 2 stars Michael Sheen...

Our favorite angel and demon duo are back in “Good Omens” Season 2: All six episodes hit Prime Video streaming on July 28. This time around, the odd couple is tasked with helping hide Gabriel (Jon Hamm) from both sides of the celestial divide until he can regain his memory.
Here are the returning and new characters and what other projects you may have seen the cast in before.
(Prime Video)
David Tennant as Crowley
Tennant, best known as the 10th Doctor on “Doctor Who,” plays fallen angel Crowley, whose relationship with Aziraphale pre-dates the creation of humans. The stylish demon often finds himself afoul of both heaven and hell. The Scottish actor also starred in “Broadchurch” and Marvel’s “Jessica Jones.”

Michael Sheen as Aziraphale

Good Omens season two is a story of friendship and love and, to quote Terry Pratchett’s Moving Pictures, “Passione in a Worlde Gone Madde!” Gorgeous-looking, perfectly cast, and full of joy, it’s like a warm hug and a mug of hot chocolate… with a little macabre horror and sketch show comedy bobbing beneath the surface.
Good Omens season one was based on a standalone novel written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, which meant that it was a complete story. That’s why most of its characters and plotlines – Adam and pals, Agnes Nutter, Anathema and the Four Motorcycle Riders of the Apocalypse – don’t appear in season two.
But more than any of those, Good Omens season one was the story of the friendship between the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale. They’re the true protagonists of the book, and indisputably the stars of the TV show,...

Prime Video will be treating Good Omens fans to behind-the-scenes videos in support of the series’ second season, with plans to drop more than a dozen before the show returns for the new season. The first featurette is packed with tidbits about season two and features Michael Sheen, David Tennant, and director/co-showrunner Douglas MacKinnon.
“The kind of world that Neil (Gaiman) and Terry Pratchett created here, it seems to be expanding out into the world in all kinds of unexpected and truly joyful ways,” offered Sheen. MacKinnon added, “If season one was a comedy about the end of the world, season two is a comedy about the beginning of everything else.”
The behind-the-scenes video was shot during production (well before the strike) and also includes cast members Miranda Richardson, Doon Mackichan, Liz Carr, Shelley Conn, Quelin Sepulveda, Gloria Obianyo, Maggie Service, and Nina Sosanya.

It’s been one hell of a wait for the unholy duo’s return, but Good Omens just announced some great news: All six episodes of Season 2 will hit Prime Video Friday, July 28, the streamer announced Wednesday.
Per its official description, the second season “will explore storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley (David Tennant). Having been on Earth since The Beginning and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals...

Jon Hamm is returning as Archangel Gabriel in Neil Gaiman’s fantasy series Good Omens as the Amazon drama has added a pair of new angels and a character from hell.
Liz Carr, who has featured in FX’s Devs and BBC’s Silent Witness, has signed on to play Saraqael, while Quelin Sepulveda, who is in Netflix’s action thriller Havoc, will play Muriel.
Bridgerton’s Shelley Conn joins the cast as another new character from hell.
Good Omens was renewed earlier this summer by the streamer with Michael Sheen returning as Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and David Tennant returning as the fast-living demon Crowley — an unlikely duo that teamed up to save the world from the apocalypse.
Hamm’s Gabriel will be aided and abetted by the Angels Michael, played by returning cast member Doon Mackichan, and Uriel, played by Dune’s Gloria Obianyo.

Netflix has cancelled The Duchess TV series so, there won't be a second season for the British comedy-drama series. The first season of six episodes was directed by Toby MacDonald and released by the streaming service in September 2020.
Created, written, and executive produced by Katherine Ryan, The Duchess revolves around a fashionably disruptive single mom and ceramics artist named Katherine (Ryan) who lives in London and makes powerful and problematic choices for her life. Her daughter, Olive (Katy Byrne), is her greatest love so she debates a second child with her greatest enemy -- Olive's dad, Shep (Rory Keenan). Steen Raskopoulos, Michelle de Swarte, Sophie Fletcher, and Doon Mackichan also star in the series.

The Duchess, the comedy from British-based comedian Katherine Ryan, has been cancelled by Netflix after one season.
The six-part series launched in September 2020 but will not return. It is centered around the powerful and problematic choices of a fashionably disruptive single mom living in London. Her daughter, Olive, is her greatest love so she debates a second child with her greatest enemy — Olive’s dad.
Ryan revealed the news on Vicky Pattison’s The Secret To… podcast. “[Netflix] didn’t want to make any more, not enough people watched it. I think something like 10 million people watched it in 28 days and that wasn’t enough,” she said. “But also, I’m not terribly sad about it. I feel like it’s a whole lot of work, a whole lot of time to make a sitcom. I was so grateful to able to make it, but I think it speaks for itself.

Director Ben Wheatley is best known for his crazy films such as Kill List, Free Fire, Sightseers, High Rise, and A Field in England. He always does some crazy far-out stuff in his films and I’ve liked everything that he’s done.
He has now made a family reunion comedy that looks unlike anything that he’s made before. It’s called Happy New Year, Colin Burstead and even though it looks like it will be his most normal movie yet, I’m sure that won’t be the case. Wheatley has never made anything normal.
Here’s the synopsis:
Colin Burstead has hired a heritage mansion for a New Year's Eve party for his extended family and hangers-on, with his own wife Val, teenage daughter Fran, and infant son Jamie in tow. Colin's mother–the family's matriarch–dramatically injures her ankle before she has even crossed the manor house's threshold.

"You need to get your house in order!" Limelight Distribution has debuted a trailer for Ben Wheatley's latest film, a familial dramedy titled Happy New Year, Colin Burstead. This already showed on BBC TV last year, after touring around film festivals starting with the London Film Festival. The raucous "family reunion comedy" is about a man named Colin Burstead, of course, who has decided to rent a lavish country manor for his extended family to celebrate New Year. Unfortunately for Colin his position of power in the family is under serious threat from the arrival of his estranged brother David, sending everything into chaos. The cast includes Neil Maskell as Colin, with Sura Dohnke, Marvin Maskell, Nicole Nettleingham, Doon Mackichan, Bill Paterson, Hayley Squires, Mark Monero, Richard Glover, and Sudha Bhuchar. This looks great! This impressed me, and it still has Wheatley's style. I love the dramatic turn in the trailer.

David Jackson’s earnest debut is sumptuously shot on England’s south coast but hobbled by hackneyed plotlines
Former TV director David Jackson makes his feature debut with this earnest, technically assured piece of downbeat British social realism. The story is about a middle-aged guy living an almost feral existence at the margins of society who is forced to reconnect with his estranged teenaged son.
The film looks good, and evokes the wild beauty of England’s south coast, thanks to some great location work by cinematographer Ben Cole. Francis Magee delivers his lead performance with conviction, and there is a nice humorous cameo by Doon Mackichan as his neighbour. The problem is that the storytelling is unconvincing: there is a clash between the realist style and the patent unreality in much of the narrative. Moreover, the film winds up with some very naive assumptions about how easy it is...

‘Bitter Wheat’ Trailer: John Malkovich Stars in David Mamet Play As Weinstein-Like “Bloated Monster”
John Malkovich is set to portray a Harvey Weinstein-like “depraved Hollywood mogul” in a world premiere UK production of David Mamet’s new play Bitter Wheat.
Just how close is the fictional character to Weinstein? In a trailer for the upcoming production at London’s Garrick Theatre, Hollywood is described as a “hell hole” where “bloated monsters devour the young.”
“Everything in Hollywood is for sale except the awards, which are for rent,” reads the website for the Garrick’s production.
Check out the trailer above.
Mamet’s Bitter Wheat, which the playwright will direct in the Garrick production, will star Malkovich as Barney Fein, described by the theater as, yes, a bloated monster and “studio head, who like his predecessor, the minotaur, devours the young he has lured into his cave. His fall from power to shame is a mythic journey which has been compared to The Odyssey...

“Reboot” is a word bandied about so much in the film industry these days that its meaning has become entirely elastic, referring to anything from a sequel to a remake to a mildly delayed franchise chapter. A lo-fi, high-volume original character piece from Ben Wheatley, “Happy New Year, Colin Burstead” is none of these things — and yet, in the sense that a reboot describes a freshly started system following technical complications, it feels like one for this genre-roaming writer-director. After mixed returns for the dizzy formal chaos of his J.G. Ballard adaptation “High-Rise” and the vapid shoot-’em-up varnish of “Free Fire,” Wheatley’s restless study of a dysfunctional family reunited for a prickly New Year’s Eve party is a back-to-basics affair that rewardingly sets him back in the seasick domestic space of his debut “Down Terrace,” albeit with words as its only weapons this time.

A good cast led by Kelsey Grammer lifts this comedy about banking, as an old-fashioned British firm falls foul of a shark-like Us investor, out of the doldrums
Like The Big Short earlier this year, this feature by the British director Vadim Jean (best known for his debut, Leon the Pig Farmer) attempts to generate comedy from the banking world and the ethically questionable people who run it – not a subject that would lend itself to hilarity, you would think. This crack at the subject is fluffier, more traditionally sitcom-like than Adam McKay’s docu-comedy about the 2009 savings and loan meltdown, but it’s diverting enough to pass muster, thanks to a seasoned cast. Kelsey Grammer plays bumbler Charles Bunbury who’s been running Tuftons, an investment bank that’s been in the family of his wife, Penelope (Tamsin Greig), for years. Charles is no match for the coup plotted...

There is something very likable about Matt Berry, and it’s not just his awesome voice. The fact that we see him in many British comedies shows just how talented he is, and with Toast of London: Series Three we see him at his best.
It would be easy to believe that Steven Toast is Matt Berry, the character feels like the ones we’ve seen him play before. In Toast of London though we see him sending up the stereotypical “Luvvies” acting community that we usually see haunting the streets of London looking for their next job.
Each episode of the show typically sees Toast being given a job by his “old school” agent Jane Plough (Doon Mackichan) and given some bad advice by his housemate Ed Howzer-Black (Robert Bathurst). What makes Toast of London interesting though is not only the outlandish characters that we meet, but also...

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Toast of London star Matt Berry has revealed that Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill will guest in series three.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others at the British Comedy Awards, Berry said that a number of other actors are being lined up to appear.
"I think Sam Neill is going to do it. And some other people. Now he has to do it I've said that," Berry joked.
Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme starred as himself in the series two finale 'Fool in Love'. Berry explained how the cameo came about:
"I know Josh and I asked him a while ago... and he likes a Toast and I said 'Do you want to do this thing in it?' And he was like 'Yeah'," he recalled.
"And then I didn't know if it would work out but he was actually doing Reading Festival when we filmed that...

Channel 4 knows it's onto a good thing with Matt Berry's Toast Of London, which has just been renewed for series 3...
Here's some cheering news for comedy fans: Matt Berry's ace, critically acclaimed sitcom Toast Of London is returning to Channel 4 for a third run.
The series, which has been an awards magnet since its one-off debut episode arrived as part of Channel 4's Funny Fortnight in 2012, follows the adventures of actor Stephen Toast (Berry) and co-stars Doon Mackichan, Robert Bathurst, Tracy-Ann Oberman and Harry Peacock.
Toast Of London recently concluded its second series on Channel 4, with its first episode having drawn a consolidated audience of 582k, rising to over 1 milllion with the addition of the Friday night repeat. Those numbers and a heap of goodwill obviously made Channel 4's decision for them, and hooray for that.
