Steven Spielberg is admitting that he made a mistake when he edited guns out of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Speaking at Time’s 100 Summit, the director explained why he made the changes in the first place and why he now regrets it.
“That was a mistake. I never should have done that,” Spielberg said about editing guns out of the science fiction film. “E.T. is a product of its era. No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are, either voluntarily, or being forced to peer through.”
He continued, “E.T. was a film that I was sensitive to the fact that the federal agents were approaching kids with firearms exposed and I thought I would change the guns into walkie-talkies… Years went by and I changed my own views. I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don’t recommend anyone do that.

Few directors thrive at working with children quite like Steven Spielberg. From "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Empire of the Sun" to "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" and "The Bfg," that Spielberg lad's films are littered with great performances from kid actors. In the cases of "E.T." and "Empire of the Sun," a number of those same youths would grow up to become celebrated adult thespians in their own right.
So it was with Drew Barrymore, who came to fame playing Elliott's (Henry Thomas) excitable younger sister Gertie in "E.T." Part of what makes Spielberg's classic 1982 sci-fi film so moving is the way Barrymore and those around her convince you that E.T. is himself a living, breathing visitor from another planet. It's not just the cast's looks of awe, shock, and wonder (i.e. "The Spielberg Face") that gives their interactions with him their emotional power. You also believe he's just as...

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. arrived in theaters in 1982, almost immediately becoming the highest-grossing film of all time and maintaining the title for over a decade. But the true lasting impact of the blockbuster is rooted in the close bonds formed within its cast. On the latest episode of the Drew Barrymore Show, the actress and host reunited with co-stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, and Robert Macnaughton in celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary.

Many of us have people in our lives who just aren’t as into horror as we are. Come October, it is tempting to simply hide away, shunning them for a month as we indulge in our favorite genre, as we no doubt will do at least some of the time. But then, they may be open to getting into the Halloween spirit at least a little bit.
For that, there are a number of terrific movies that take place on and around the holiday that are not out of the question for the squeamish. Some fit comfortably into the horror genre and some are far from it, but all beautifully capture the essence of the season.
So, here are a few of our favorite family Halloween movies to get you and the scaredy cat in your life into the Halloween mood for spooky season…

Nothing brings you back in time quicker than revisiting a childhood favorite through the context of adult eyes. I got to experience that feeling not too long ago with the IMAX re-release of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" because, as of this year, Steven Spielberg's classic celebrates its 40th anniversary.
When a film is inducted into the canon of great movies, it can sometimes be easy to forget how much they affected you initially. But seeing how Spielberg's soft direction, coupled with John Williams' magnificently emotional score, came together on the biggest screen imaginable brought me back to being eight years old again.

Is it a reach to call "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" one of the best family movies ever made? Probably not, as its mixture of deep themes and childlike wonder makes a great watch for everyone, regardless of age. To say that this was intentional would be an understatement -- director Steven Spielberg has been quite open over the years about how the film helped him process his parents' seemingly sudden divorce, an event dramatized in his upcoming film "The Fabelmans." It is obvious when watching "E.T." that it was meant to help showcase the complex emotions surrounding divorce to people of all ages, especially children.

Steven Spielberg has a lot to be proud of as a filmmaker. It's impressive for a director to create one film that becomes a classic or generation-defining film, and Spielberg has created several. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," the "Indiana Jones" franchise, "Jaws" -- the man is unstoppable. His innate ability to tap into childhood wonder has produced some of the best kid's films ever, including 1982's "E.T. the Extraterrestrial."
While Spielberg is known for these iconic films, he didn't start out making kid's movies, but they all involved an adult character with a childlike spirit. His amazing ability to reduce grown-ups to big kids with wide, dream-filled eyes has served him well for decades, and produced a staggering amount of blockbusters -- so many that it might be difficult for his fans to pick a favorite. But it's an easy choice for the filmmaker.

The director’s lauded 1982 hit is about childhood empathy – four decades later, it’s still one of his most complete experiences
There’s a crucial domestic scene early in Et the Extra-Terrestrial where 10-year-old Elliott (Henry Thomas) is trying desperately to convince his mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton) and his little sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore) that he’s found an alien in the back yard of their suburban home. Nobody believes him. So he lashes out, like many children would in that situation. He claims his absent father would have believed him. And he tells his harried mother, who’s still raw from the divorce, that his dad and a woman named Sally are vacationing in Mexico. It hurts her feelings.
Michael snaps at Elliott. “Why don’t you grow up? Think about other people for a change.”...

The scene is familiar to every child of the ‘80s. Little 10-year-old Elliott and his older brother Michae —still learning how to drive a car—have stolen a van in order to help their newfound alien friend E.T. After rescuing him from the clutches of a team of government agents intent on studying the creature, they rendezvous with Michael’s buddies at a local park. Elliott explains to them that E.T. is a man from outer space and that they’re taking him, via their bicycles, to his spaceship.
“Well, can’t he just…beam up?” asks one of the boys. “This is Reality, Greg,” Elliott responds.
The line always gets a laugh from audiences. But it’s an apt one. For “reality” is exactly what distinguishes Steven Spielberg’s 1982 masterpiece E.T. the Extra Terrestrial from most every other science-fiction blockbuster, particularly those marketed toward kids. At its...

“E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” came back into our lives over Thanksgiving courtesy of a new holiday ad from Comcast’s cable and internet provider Xfinity.
In the spot, E.T. travels to Earth to reunite with a grown-up Elliott and his new family. Henry Thomas, the actor who originally played Elliott in the 1982 film, is now a married 40-something father of two.
It’s been more than 35 years since E.T. first came to Earth and change Elliot’s and his family’s life. Since E.T.’s back to check in on his old friend, but what have the actors been up to since E.T. phoned home?

Childhood star Henry Thomas has come full circle. When he wasn't becoming famous as Elliott in the 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and other films, he grew up quietly on a farm in South Texas. Nearly four decades later, he moved to a farm of his own, this time in Oregon with his third wife, Anna, 46, and three kids: Hazel, 14, Evelyn, 9, and Henry III, 8. "That was always my goal. We have horses, and apples, and horse apples," Henry, 46, exclusively tells Closer Weekly, laughing. He's also achieved adult success with films like Legends of the Fall. "It's hard when you’re remembered for an iconic role," he says. "But I’m in an industry where in order to get a job, I have to go into a room and get either rejected or accepted. If you have a thin skin, you just won’t last very long." Henry in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Did you know that the ending we saw in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra Terrestrial wasn't the original ending of the movie? There was another ending that was shot that ended up on the cutting room floor.
I remember hearing something about this years ago, but thanks to an interview with Robert MacNaughton, who played Elliot's brother Michael, we have some new details on this scene. E.T. is turning 35 freakin' years old this year! Seeing this film is the earliest memory I have of going to the movies and it so cool and fun to learn new things about it all these years later.

'Jurassic World' velociraptor kicks Iron Man ass at worldwide box office. 'Jurassic World' officially surpasses 'The Avengers' at worldwide box office Directed by Colin Trevorrow; starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Vincent D'Onofrio; and co-executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World has officially become the third biggest worldwide box office hit in history. The Jurassic Park sequel – or reboot, as it's basically the same story with a slightly different twist – has surpassed Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed all-star superhero flick The Avengers, which broke box office records back in 2012. Of course, "officially" just ain't what it used to be – like, in the days before The Fall. So you wisely ask, "But which movie has actually sold the most tickets?" After all, that's the true measure of a film's popularity. Well, that's a tough one to answer without the studios providing accurate, precise numbers. And that's not about to happen. It always...

Spielberg has taken home two Best Director Oscars: Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Schindler's List also won Best Picture, but Saving Private Ryan lost to John Madden's Miramax-distributed Shakespeare in Love. There was quite a bit of animosity at the time, as some felt that Miramax, owned by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, overdid its Oscar campaigning – while still managing to sway enough Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members to vote for its film. Somewhat ironically, at the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony Steven Spielberg presented the Best Picture Award to The King's Speech. Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg has taken movie audiences on extravagant adventures of a lifetime during his lengthy course behind the camera when impacting the film industry with his captivating on-screen imagination. Spielberg has shown an amazing range of vision and scope when tackling various movie genres that tap in the collective consciousness of moviegoers. Science fiction, social issue dramas, action and adventure, period pieces, family-oriented fantasies, comedies, war movies–you name it and Spielberg has done it on the big screen in his illustrious film career in directing, producing, writing and promoting.
Although Spielberg has done his share of adult-oriented films that cater to the sophisticated masses he is primarily known for his whimsical kid-friendly fare or at least releases that feature children in some of his escapist gems that may not necessarily be considered kiddie-coated. It is not really difficult in coming up with cinema siblings and assessing their impact on the films they graced with humor, horror or hedonism. Whatever the combination–brother and sister, brother and brother, sister and sister–the big screen has always produced some of the most compelling siblings to entertain or shock us as the lights go dim at the local cinemaplex.
So who do you favor as your all-time favorite movie siblings? Perhaps you wouldn’t mind brothers Michael and Sam from 1987′s The Lost Boys? Or how about sisters Drizella and Anastasia from the 1950 animated film Cinderella? Maybe you could go for the transformation of television’s Brady kids into the film version of 1995′s The Brady Bunch Movie?

Roald Dahl and Ian Fleming previously collaborated on You Only Live Twice, but this feels closer to a true fusion: James Bond for juniors with a modern fairytale element. It's easy to unpick who did what: from Fleming's side you get a gadget-stuffed car, a heroine with an absurdly suggestive name (Sally Ann Howes' Truly Scrumptious), a Bond-style baddie (Gert "Goldfinger" Frobe) and a daring assault on his secret lair. It was also produced by Bond-merchant Cubby Broccoli, with sets by Ken Adam. And from Dahl's side you get empathetic children's plight (essential with two...

Steven Spielberg's' E.T.:The Extra-Terrestrial 30th Anniversary Blu-ray arrived on shelves on October 9, just in time to get the Halloween season off to a glorious start. This is the second Spielberg classic to get the Blu-ray special treatment, with Jaws recently being released as well. The movie stars Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton and K.C. Martel. Watching this again, I was reminded of how special this film is. E.T. looks the best I have seen it in a long time on Blu-ray with it's beautifully restored filmic 1080p video transfer. The sound is equally impressive, with a DTS-hd Master Audio 7.1 This is enough of a reason to buy this film, but the added special features make this purchase a no-brainer.
Melissa Mathison wrote this wonderful screenplay that not only introduces audiences to a different side of Aliens, but also takes us inside of a broken family.

There are many things that make Steven Spielberg's 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' -- thirty years old this year -- a magical masterpiece: a sensitive script, fantastic special effects (it's often easy to forget the title star is a mechanical puppet), John Williams' uplifting score. But one of the most over-looked aspects is the cast.
Eschewing big name stars and established child actors, Spielberg discovered a raft of talent, young and old, that do much to make 'E.T.' such an emotional experience. Here are their 'E.T.' stories and what happened next....
E.T. is 30 years old - hard to believe, but true
Henry Thomas (Elliott Taylor)
That was then: "I used to think 'If I mess this up, what's going to happen?'" recalls Henry Thomas about his days as the lead in 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial'. "'Are they going fire me? I'm nine years old.

There are Blu-ray releases that boast exclusive material or copious special features but the draw here really is the transfer which is an absolute beauty. There are multiple generations now that have seen “E.T.” on video or on TV and never quite seen it like this before. The fact is that a lot of “E.T.” takes place at night, in the woods near Elliott’s house,...

Los Angeles -- How old is too old to sob like a little girl at "E.T. – the Extra-Terrestrial"? Not 40, apparently.
The Steven Spielberg film that would become a 1980s pop-culture phenomenon is coming out on Blu-Ray for the first time Tuesday – 30 years, four Academy Awards and nearly $800 million after its theatrical release. To commemorate this, theaters across the country recently showed a digitally re-mastered version of the film for one night only.
Being a total geek for "E.T.," I jumped at the chance to see it again in a theater. And yes, I dug up my old red hoodie and bought some Reese's Pieces for the occasion.
Having worked as a film critic for a while now – and with a child of my own – I wanted to find out whether the movie would still have the same emotional impact on me as it did when I was a kid. I...

Working with an alien on a movie is probably a little bit easier than working with a child actor.
At least with the alien you can literally pull its puppet strings. Kids require a slightly more magical touch.
That’s what Steven Spielberg learned while working on E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and a special documentary on the new Blu-ray release (out Oct. 9) shows just how deep his connection was with 6-year-old Drew Barrymore and 10-year-old Henry Thomas.

Some movies, songs, and pop culture moments are so unassailably perfect that you can't believe anyone ever had to physically produce them. You want to believe they've always existed, perfectly, before civilization could exist and pour adoration on them and fatigue their legacy. Take the song "Stand By Me," for example, the Ben E. King standard. Can you believe somebody sat down and wrote that? It had to be written somewhere. It wasn't just a spotless three-minute elegy that came to Earth with the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. It could have very well not existed had songwriters Leiber and Stoller not penned it with Mr. King. I find that crazy.
The same goes for this week's "Best Movie Ever?" candidate, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this month. E.T. is, simply put, one of the few flawless movies. It is certainly the greatest non-Clue movie of the '80s. I...

This week on Saturdays with Spielberg, we tackle one of Spielberg's most beloved films; the alien flick Et. Is it still as good as it was 20 years ago? Found out after the break!
The Basics:
Elliot is alone. Alienated, if you will. Other than his brother and sister (and his brother's annoying friends), Elliot has no company. His mother and father are going through a rocky divorce, and him and his family are finding the transition troubling. What Elliot needed was a friend. And he got one the day he found an alien hiding in his tool shed. Giving him a home and the moniker "E.T", Elliot and the rest of his siblings quickly grow an attachment to the creature. However, not everyone is happy with E.T; some are looking for him, and will stop at nothing to retrieve him...

Steven Spielberg, 1982
After 1977's Close Encounters (see no 11), director Steven Spielberg reversed the alien encounter formula to wonder not what we would make of them but what they would make of us. The result was this 1982 blockbuster, which eclipsed even the original Star Wars and received nine Oscar nominations (winning four) – a feat unheard of for a film with such overt sci-fi content.
Despite its genre trappings, Et balanced its fantasy content with an academy-pleasing dose of sentiment, played out in the home life of Elliott (Henry Thomas), a lonely 10-year-old whose parents are separating. Little time is spent revealing where the film's Et has come from, or how he came to be left behind. Instead, Spielberg focuses on the film's unlikely-buddy story; the middle child of three (Drew Barrymore is the sweet but clingy younger sister, Robert MacNaughton the cynical teenage big brother), Elliott takes in the Et as...

Around the same time that movies like The Day After (reviewed here) came out and traumatized kids across the country with real fears of an apocalypse, another movie actually designed for children would come along and traumatize youth in a different, more emotional, and ultimately more devastating way. For many in my generation, Steven Spielberg's E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial was the first movie we'd see in a movie theater (and for later generations, it was often the first non-animated feature film that those kids would see on VHS and later DVD). The 6th biggest movie of all time (4th, if adjusted for inflation), has heightened children's fears of abandonment for nearly three decades now. For many of us, it also taught us the shame of weeping in a public movie theater. Indeed, my first movie-theater experience would end in something not far short of my own personal...

I had always heard of 1988's Mac and Me in the most vague whispers of infamy, and so I always knew that I'd eventually get around to seeing it, being such an avid fan of train-wrecks and all. However, leave it to one Paul Rudd to show me the single scene that would jet this puppy right to the top of my Netflix Queue. He did, so I did, and now it's behind me.
Or is it? Surely, some of you have also seen this hilarious E.T. rip-off, in which a young boy (not played by Henry Thomas) cares for an alien creature -- separated from its family, natch -- with a girl his age who believes first (not played by Drew Barrymore), a skeptical older brother (not Robert MacNaughton), and an oblivious mother (not Dee Wallace), feeding it junk food (Skittles instead of Reese's Pieces, etc.) as faceless government...

Director Steven Spielberg was reunited with stars of E.T. for the sci-fi epic's 20th anniversary. The movie-maker posed for snaps with Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton and Peter Coyote to mark the re-release of the film in digitised form. The flick's biggest success story has been Drew, who played little Gertie, who after battling drug and alcohol addiction, has now become an a-list Hollywood star. Henry, who played the extra-terrestrial's best pal Elliot, has appeared in Legends Of The Fall and All The Pretty Horses, but would rather be a rock star. And Robert, who played big brother Michael, enjoys a modest life as postal worker in Phoenix, Arizona.
