Mad Max's George Miller was agonisingly close to bringing Justice League to the screen. Here's why it didn't happen...
With Mad Max: Fury Road currently melting minds at multiplexes worldwide, it seems like the right time to remind everyone that the film's director, George Miller, was once set to helm a Justice League movie back around 2008. The project was known as Justice League: Mortal and it was far more than an unproduced script. A full cast was in place, sets and costumes were in production from Weta Workshop, and filming was all set to begin in Australia before things got...complicated.
It's a shame, too. Based on the script I read, Justice League: Mortal would have been a fairly impressive, very recognisable representation of DC's flagship super team. It also would have beaten The Avengers to the big screen by at least a couple of years.

Chills and thrills: will Gotham City be put on ice? George Clooney is Batman as the dark knight battles his greatest threat yet: cold-hearted Mr. Freeze (Schwarzenegger) and venomous Poison Ivy (Thurman). So far, we know two key things about the "Man of Steel" sequel. First and foremost, it will feature Batman (played by Academy Award winner, Ben Affleck). Second, the sequel will at least be partially filmed in Detroit. Now, thanks to Latino Review, there's a rumor that Batfleck will also have a love interest.
Although the casting call put out for Bruce's lady friend is oddly specific (late 20's, possessing physicality), we still have no idea as to who this so-called "love interest" will be. In the comics, Batman has actually had a plethora of girlfriends throughout the decades. That being said, here's a list of five characters who could potentially be Bruce's love interest in "Batman vs. Superman"—starting with a familiar face.

Batman is such a player!
We all assume since this is after all a sequel to Man Of Steel 2, that Bruce Wayne is going to try to pull a robbery on Clark Kent Jersey Shore style and bag Lois Lane. If you think about it, it is kind of on the nose and well, that ain’t screenwriter David Goyer’s style. I mean Bruce Wayne could end up at least flirting in a scene or two with Lois Lane but, Bruce has another woman on his mind. Yes, the Goddamn Batman is going to have a love interest.
How do I know? Well, the following casting breakdown is what is floating around to the talent agencies.
They’re looking for someone in their late 20s and are open to all ethnicities. So not only does the 42 year old Goddamn Batman like em at least a decade younger, but...

It seems we are hearing more names and characters floating around The Dark Knight Rises rumor mill and those names aren’t Vera Farmiga, Natalie Portman or Charlize Theron as previously mentioned. Christopher Nolan is looking at some of Hollywood’s leading actresses — as well as a few emerging talents — for major female roles in The Dark Knight Rises, his next Batman film. Names like Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Kate Mara, Charlotte Riley and Gemma Arterton are expected to test for the film.
According to THR, Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises needs to fill two big female roles, a villain and a love interest. Sources say one character is Talia, the daughter of villain Ra’s Al Ghul, who was portrayed by Liam Neeson in Nolan’s first Gotham-set crime pic Batman Begins. In the comic books, Talia is both Batman’s lover and antagonist, ultimately siring...

Damn the laws of nature once again! Marion Cotillard, my personal pick for Catwoman ever since the day Chris Nolan hired her for Inception, has announced she is pregnant. Her reps told Us Magazine yesterday that she is expecting her first child with longtime lover and fellow actor Guillaume Canet.
That well and truly takes the French born, Oscar winning actress out of the running for The Dark Knight Rises, the May shooting third Batman film from Team Nolan that Cotillard held talks about last year for one of two major female roles we hear are present in the screenplay. One role, I’m hoping at least, is reserved for Catwoman.
Recently we ran a poll asking you guys which two female characters you most wanted to see in the new film and 712 of you voted, with Talia Al Ghul and Catwoman the clear fan favourties;
Talia Al Ghul 26% Catwoman 25% Harley Quinn 18% Selina Kyle (i.

Well, at least Katherine Heigl wasn't on there.
These fine actresses are also lined up to play the love interest of Bruce Wayne, who is rumored to be Julie Madison, but who could the villain be? Miss Ghul is the daughter of Ra's al Ghul, memorably played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins, and has been a huge presence in the comics since Dennis O'Neal's era in the early 70's,...

Just a few days ago we told you that in addition to shooting in Chicago, Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming entry in his Batman franchise, The Dark Knight Rises will begin principal photography in New Orleans in April of 2011. The only firm casting that we know of, outside of the returning cast is the addition of Tom Hardy (Inception), and we’re still not privy to which role he will be playing in the film.
Now, Deadline reports that Natalie Portman (Black Swan, Thor), Naomi Watts (Dream House), Rachel Weisz (The Whistleblower), Anne Hathaway (One Day), Keira Knightley (A Dangerous Method) and Blake Lively (Green Lantern) are vying for two completely different female lead roles in The Dark Knight Rises. One of the roles will be Bruce Wayne’s new love interest, and the other will be a villain.

The latest and a real big rumor from Hollywood goes like this: Christopher Nolan has put the call out to fill two female lead roles in The Dark Knight Rises.
Actresses that Christopher Nolan has been rumored to have met with include Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz, Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively and Naomi Watts.
And we must admit this is pretty impressive. But how to expect less from great name such as Christopher Nolan!?
According to Deadline, Nolan is casting for two different female roles. One of the roles is to be a love interest for Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) and the other a villain.
But that’s not all. Just another one rumor, please.
Movieweb reports that Charlize Theron is up for the role of Detective Sarah Essen and that Vera Farmiga had auditioned for Julie Madison, which will be the love interest role for Bruce Wayne.

Charlize Theron and Vera Farmiga are rumoured to be up for roles in "The Dark Knight Rises" reports Comic Book Movie. The site's unnamed agency source claims Theron has been approached to portray Detective Sarah Essen, the new love interest for Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman). In the comics, Essen was partnered with Gordon and later had an affair with the married detective and is implied to be the real mother of Barbara Gordon (aka. Batgirl). Actresses Vera Farmiga and Kacie Thomas have also apparently auditioned for the role of Julie Madison who will serve as Bruce Wayne's new love interest. In the comics, the character was a socialite who becomes engaged to Wayne but is unaware of his Batman identity and later becomes associated with the villain Clayface....

With "X-Men: First Class" currently shooting and "The Dark Knight Rises" gearing up production as well, there are bound to be more than a few rumors floating around regarding both franchises. But which rumors are true? Which ones are totally bogus?
Take a recent "First Class" rumor, for example. Earlier this week, buzz started building that Hugh Jackman might have a cameo in the "X-Men" prequel, based on a driver's claim that he drove the actor to an airport near the film's supposed shooting location in Georgia.
But fans' heightened hopes for a Wolverine cameo took a dive with an official response from producer Bryan Singer, who tells the Coventry Telegraph: "He's not in the movie, he's in the Wolverine movies."
"X-Men hasn't started shooting in Georgia yet," he continued. "If Hugh was in Georgia, it wasn't for this movie."

We're almost two years away from the release of The Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan's likely final entry in his thus far superb series of Batman films. Two years. Which means we've got a long time for speculation, adulation, criticism, fawning, bitching, hand-wringing, and general nerdtastic fanboy splodeyism. Yes, all of those are words. Fuck you.
Speaking of nerdtastic, am I the only one who inexplicably doesn't like the title, The Dark Knight Rises? Something just seems off about it. I dunno. Whatever. Moving on.
Women have not fared particularly well in Nolan's Batman universe. Katie Holmes, as Rachel Dawes, was messed up by the Scarecrow and gave an breathtakingly dull performance. Maggie Gyllenhaal, who I think is lovely and amazingly talented, took over the role and got herself blown to smithereens and was derided by shallow dickheads as not being pretty enough, which is a) one of the most idiotic,...

The latest Dark Knight Rises casting rumours point to Clayface as the movie's villain. According to ComicBookMovie, Kacie Thomas and Vera Farmiga have auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne's love interest Julie Madison. The character was previously engaged to Wayne, and also targeted by Basil Karlo - aka Clayface - in the pages of Detective Comics. This has led to speculation that he might appear in Christopher (more)...

Could there be two lead female roles in the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises? Neither of which is Catwoman…?
We suspect we might have quite a lot of this in the months ahead, and much of the speculation that's going to surround the upcoming production of The Dark Knight Rises needs to be taken with a couple of dollops of salt. It's in that spirit that we'll round up the rumours as we get them, but don't expect them all to come true.
Take, for instance, the story circulating about Christopher Nolan hunting for two actresses for lead roles in the new Batman film. Nolan's Gotham City has hardly been overflowing with women so far, but The Dark Knight Rises may well introduce a new love interest character for Commissioner Jim Gordon, and one for Bruce Wayne.
It looks like there's a lot more to both than just love interest roles,...

Oscar winner Charlize Theron, Oscar nominated actress Vera Farmiga, and relative newcomer Kacie Thomas are all being rumored for love interests in Christopher Nolan third and final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
According to ComicBookMovie — an outlet, we should point out, accepts articles from any volunteer contributor — an inside source at a casting agency says Theron has been approached to play Detective Sarah Essen, a police detective in the DC Comics canon who partners with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) — then a lieutenant — and later carries on a scandalous love affair with him.
Thomas, who starred with Theron in The Burning Plain, and Farmiga are supposedly up for the role of Julie Madison, a character who first appeared in the comics in 1939. Madison is an “oft-imperiled socialite” who is engaged to Bruce Wayne and unaware of his nocturnal activities. A version of Madison appeared in 1997’s Batman & Robin, played by Elle MacPherson,...

The Dark Knight Rises is beginning its rumor mill of casting and character speculation and why not? I mean, it’s a great conversation starter. Comic Book Movie is already 0 for 1 on rumors. While I post this, they got it wrong about Wolverine being in The X-Men: First Class. However, I think both of these rumors – at least with the characters – they are bringing up make a lot of sense.
Comic Book Movie is reporting an intriguing rumor now that actresses Charlize Theron and Vera Farmiga may be up for roles in The Dark Knight Rises. A source at an unnamed agency indicated that Theron has been approached to portray Detective Sarah Essen, a new love interest for Gary Oldman’s character, Jim Gordon. Speculation here is given the way Gordon’s cop life hit close to home in The Dark Knight and his wife leaves him. Sarah Essen first...

Now that we know that "Batman 3" is actually called "The Dark Knight Rises" and that it has Tom Hardy (Inception) on board and will not feature The Riddler, it's time to finish putting together the rest of the cast. Cbm has learned that Charlize Theron has been approached to play Detective Sarah Essen, who is partnered with James Gordon. The two end up having an affair and she is eventually murdered by The Joker. It was hinted that she is the real mother of Barbara Gordon (aka Batgirl). Meanwhile Vera Farmiga and Kacie Thomas have already auditioned for the role of Julie Madison, who is a socialite engaged to Bruce Wayne. She is not aware of Wayne's secret identity and is often used as a pawn in the vampiric Monk's battle with Batman. She has also been associated with the villain Clayface.

In My latest round-up of bits and pieces, we today learned that The Hobbit has gathered further cast members.
James Nesbitt (pictured) will play Bofur, described as a disarmingly forthright, funny and occasionally brave dwarf.
In an official statement, director Peter Jackson said: "James's charm, warmth and wit are legendary as is his range as an actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. We feel very lucky to be able to welcome him as one of our cast."
In addition newcomer Adam Brown will play Ori, another of the Company of Dwarves which sets off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug.
Jackson commented: "Adam is a wonderfully expressive actor and has a unique screen presence. I look forward to seeing him bring Ori to life."
They join a number of other actors recently announced for the two-part film adaptation of Tolkien's novel.

They may very well be, if this Cbm rumor turns out to be true. According to the site, rumors have Charlize Theron (below) being approached by the filmmakers to play Detective Sarah Essen in the Christopher Nolan film, while two actresses, including “Orphan’s” Vera Farmiga (left), have auditioned for the role of Julie Madison. In comic lore, Sarah Essen was a Gotham City Detective who had an affair with Jim Gordon while the two worked closely together. The character was first introduced in Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One” storyline. Later in comic book continuity, she and Gordon ended up getting married, before Essen was murdered by the Joker. I can see Theron in the tough cop role, though that might depend on what happens with George Miller’s delayed “Fury Road” and if she signs on to “Snow White and the Huntsman”, where rumor has her being courted to play the evil Queen.

The Dark Knight Rises has been gaining momentum since director Christopher Nolan announced the film's title last week. Today, we can drop the names of some actresses who are being considered for Batman's "leading lady" roles. Thanks to our friends over at Collider. Remember, these are all rumors right now!
The internet is going crazy this afternoon over names like Charlize Theron, Vera Farmiga and Kacie Thomas all being attached in some capacity to the latest Batman film. Returning to the "Bat fold" are Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and of course the new acquisition of Tom Hardy (in an as yet unnamed role).
The rumor is that Charlie Theron has been approached to play Detective Sarah Essen, who will be a love interest for Commissioner Gordon (Isn't he married? It doesn't matter these days anyway, does it?). The Essen character dates back to the Frank Miller...

There's been so many rumors that've flown around "The Dark Knight Rises" that... well, it's just pretty nuts. Everyone's talking away about what female character Christopher Nolan will be dragging up into his Batman story line for the sequel, along with who he's auditioning. This rumor could be doing nothing more than just blowing smoke up our asses, but it could easily be true. You'll see what I mean as you read on. Charlize Theron, who is a client, has been approached to play a Detective named Sarah Essen--a love interest for Jim Gordon. Actresses Kacie Thomas and Vera Farmiga have auditioned for the character role of Julie Madison, a love interest for Bruce Wayne. If Sarah Essen seems familiar, then you've at least read up on Batman: Year One. She's the new detective who rolls into town back in Gordon's early days in Gotham and ends up having a...

And neither of them would play Catwoman! According to Comic Book Movie (there's my grain of salt), Charlize Theron and Vera Farmiga are in talks to appear in The Dark Knight Rises for Christopher Nolan. Theron would play Detective Sarah Essen (who winds up marrying Commissioner Gordon in the comics), while Farmiga would tackle Julie Madison, a one-time love of Bruce Wayne. I would tell you to hold your breath, but you're probably doing that already. [Comic Book Movie via Cinematical]...

It sounds like director Christopher Nolan may have decided that his next Batman movie needs more female characters, or rather more than one. On the previous two Batman films the only female character of any note was Rachel Dawes, and she existed mostly to be rescued by Batman. For the sequel, there could be a several new female roles, probably because Batman needs more women to rescue. Comic Book Movie claims that the script for the third movie includes a character named Detective Sarah Essen, set to serve as a love interest for top cop Jim Gordon, father of Batgirl Barbara Gordon. Word is that Charlize Theron has been approached to play the part. Their source further indicates that a new love interest for Bruce Wayne is being cast, a character named Julie Madison which both Vera Farmiga and Kacie Thomas have auditioned for. Here.s where this doesn.t...

With Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises set to film this spring, get ready for the onslaught of casting rumors, contradictions, and announcements up until the first day of production. Our latest comes from Comic Book Movie, in which an agency source told them a few actresses in contention for two separate roles.
One of their clients, Charlize Theron, “has been approached to play a Detective Named Sarah Essen–a love interest for Jim Gordon,” the police commissioner played by Gary Oldman. But didn’t The Dark Knight end with him and his happily traumatized family intact? Cbm has a possible answer below:
Sarah Essen first appears in Batman #405, part of the Batman: Year One storyline. She is a detective partnered with then-lieutenant James Gordon. She and the married Gordon start a brief affair. She is murdered by the Joker and is hinted as the real Mother of Barbara Gordon (batgirl).
Steamy.

And the Batman rumor train rolls ever on! ComicBookMovie has broken the "take it with a grain of salt" story that the third part of Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, will feature not one but Two new love interests to replace the previously explodified Rachel Dawes.
Charlize Theron is the supposed front-runner to play Detective Sarah Essen, who comic fans will remember as the partner Jim Gordon has an affair with in Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One comics.
Meanwhile, Kacie Thomas (The Burning Plain) and Vera Farmiga (The Departed) have both auditioned for the role of Julie Madison, a wealthy socialite who in the comics is a pawn of The Monk. Madison is engaged to Bruce Wayne, but is in the dark about his nightly activities. The Monk is one of Batman's earliest villains, a vampire who dresses like a red Ku Klux Klansman,...

Alright, wow, it's been far too long since we've reported loose talk about The Dark Knight Rises, so I'll introduce this for public debate with a big *rumor* disclaimer attached. ComicBookMovie received a pair of scoops from a casting agent who claims that Charlize Theron is being sought to play Sarah Essen, and Kacie Thomas and Vera Farmiga have auditioned for the role of Julie Madison. Who are these two people? Sarah Essen showed up in a Batman: Year One storyline as a detective and love...

It's a pretty slow news day, which means it's a great time for another update on the next Batman movie, right? Today's rumor comes on the heels of a recent announcement that Christopher Nolan and his Bat-clan were on the lookout for a new leading lady. Christopher Nolan'S mind-bending thriller Inception is probably the best film of 2010 so far (an honour it will likely retain at year's end) and we can all remember the mystery that surrounded the movie in the build-up to its release.
With that in mind, Nolan is being characteristically coy about his next Batman project, due out in July 2012.
But a few fresh clues have been prised out of the filmmaker in a new interview.
He revealed to the La Times that what we have all been calling Batman 3 would be called The Dark Knight Rises, that it will Not be in 3D and that the villain "won't be the Riddler." By his own admission, Nolan isn't very forthcoming and there's very little to add to those few details at this point.
I can't say I'm overly fond of the title but at least the last tidbit effectively rules out...
