Tom Hanks has been trying his hand at old curmudgeons lately, with Elvis and A Man Called Otto. But there's no doubt he's at his best when he's playing sweet-natured characters. And few come more nice than US children's TV favourite Fred Rogers. Marielle Heller's biopic charmer goes beyond the children's favourite onscreen to show he was just as adorable away from the camera as a journalist who comes to interview him (Matthew Rhys) gets emotional support as well as his story. Hanks is so good, you’ll feel nostalgia for him even if this is your own first encounter with a man who, thankfully in a cynical world, was not too good to be true. The phrase “they don’t make ’em like that anymore” is one that could easily be used to describe Wendy Makkena. To put it simply, the level of talent she has isn’t something you see very often. Born and raised in New York City, Wendy’s career has spanned more than 30 years and she has proven time and time again that she can play any character that is presented to her. Since making her first TV appearance in 1986, Wendy has gone on to earn more than 60 on-screen credits. Although her resume is full of lots of great roles, she

"We want to sue the police... but we need witnesses." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie film titled Spiked, from filmmaker Juan Vera Martinez. He was inspired to make the film after hearing real-life stories of immigrants suffering abuse of power from law enforcement agencies some 20-years ago and incredibly moved by how relevant these stories are today as immigrant families continue to grapple with inhumane and unjust treatment over and over. When the murder of a migrant worker shakes a southwest border town to its core, the feud between a newspaper owner and the chief of police leads to the blurring of the truth and a dirty fight for justice. The film stars Aidan Quinn, Deirdre Lovejoy, Carlos Gomez, Danay Garcia, Wendy Makkena, Lovensky Jean-Baptiste, Walter Belenky, Sal Lopez, and Christopher Rich. It looks like a powerful drama about the struggles of many immigrants these days.

In 2018, Morgan Neville’s magnificent and devastatingly timely documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? was a big success, reminding us of Fred Rogers’ humanist ideas and emotional learning. Marielle Heller's A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, based on Tom Junod's 1998 Esquire Mister Rogers profile, Can You Say…Hero?, braids the fictional family story of journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) together with his life-changing encounter with the iconic children's program host, played superbly by Tom Hanks.
Wendy Makkena, playing Dorothy, on Chris Cooper as Jerry: “He's heartbreaking.”
Lloyd's attitude towards work and private life is bound to his estranged relationship with his father Jerry (Chris Cooper), who years ago abandoned Lloyd's dying mother.

Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.
In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

Older Millennials are typically hesitant to claim the much-maligned label, but slap some “Sister Act” on the TV and you’ll soon see who was born after 1982. One look at Whoopi Goldberg in that nun’s habit, and they won’t be able to stop from singing, “Oh Happy Day.” It’s been 25 years since the comedy first debuted, and Goldberg used her post on “The View” to reunite members of the original cast for a rousing version of “I Will Follow Him.”

The cast was backed up by a few extra choir members to round out the harmonies, which might not have been a bad idea judging from how some of their voices have aged. One thing...

Last week’s NCIS left a lot of questions unanswered, particularly about the fate of McGee’s injured girlfriend Delilah, who was in rough condition after a bomb was detonated at a gala. This week, we got some resolution — and it was more tragic than I’d anticipated.
But let me start a the top of the episode…
As you recall, Bishop was under pressure to find Benham Parsa, the man who eluded capture last week. And early on during Tuesday’s episode, it was established that the team’s best lead was the driver who help Parsa flee, Bashir Malik.

Fox's The Mob Doctor continues stave off cancellation but for how long? That will likely have a lot to do with the ratings. Will tonight's numbers help or hurt the show's future?
The Mob Doctor stars Jordana Spiro as a hospital doctor who secretly works as a physician for Chicago mobsters. The cast also includes Floriana Lima, Zach Gilford, Željko Ivanek, Wendy Makkena, Jesse Lee Soffer, William Forsythe, and James Carpinello.
The show debuted to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.11 million total viewers. It received lots of negative reviews, lost a significant percentage of its Bones lead-in and only tied for third place in its timeslot.
Last week, opposite tougher competition, Mob Doctor's ratings fell to a 1.3 in the demo with 3.85 million -- declines of 13% and 25% respectively.

The wave of female-led superdramas (read Primetime Soaps) continues with Fox‘s new show, The Mob Doctor. In this spin, Chicago surgeon Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) is working off someone else’s debt to the mob by working as their personal physician for any of those pesky matters the mob doesn’t want showing up at the hospital.
In much the vein of last spring’s premiere, Scandal, The Mob Doctor throws us into a world of someone whose daily planner has entries to cover every twenty seconds, and who is surrounded by such a plague of fantastic events and situations that you become surprised when she uneventfully buys a cup of coffee, and are forced to wonder how she could possibly manage a trip to the bathroom.

The Hippocratic oath takes on a whole new meaning tonight on Fox's new Drama/Black Comedy(?) The Mob Doctor. Dr. Grace Devlin commits her considerable medical skills to the mafia to keep her brother alive. Hilarity ensues. For being such a high concept show, I found The Mob Doctor to have a fairly entertaining template going on. It seems being in the mob, or associated with the mob, can lead to some pretty interesting maladies.
Dr. Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) is a top resident at Chicago’s Roosevelt Medical Center. Smart and self-assured, she’s heralded as one of the country’s most promising young surgeons. But family ties keep her glued to her Southside roots. To pay off her brother’s life-threatening gambling debt, she makes a deal with the devil and agrees to work “off book” for the mafia men she once despised.

You may not think Drop Dead Diva when you watch tonight’s premiere of The Mob Doctor on Fox, but both shows share more than a little bit in common.
They each deal with matters of identity and truth; featured a female lead; and were created by Josh Berman.
Just how much is Dr. Grace Devlin (Jordana Spiro) an anti-hero as she’s reluctantly pulled into the mob world? Will Grace find parts of the mob addictive? Because the show follows Bones, a crossover episode seems like a no-brainer, right? Chicago – When the cliches of one genre aren’t enough, try two. Such seems to be the creative foundation of the awful new Fox series “The Mob Doctor,” a likely bet to be the first new show of the year to meet the axe of cancellation and not merely because it’s awful but because it’s in a brutal time slot up against “2 Broke Girls,” “The Voice,” and “Dancing with the Stars.”
Television Rating: 1.0/5.0
However, “The Mob Doctor” would have difficulty finding an audience in the best time slot on TV simply because it’s dramatically uninteresting and essentially pretty insulting to your intelligence. About five minutes in and this Chicago resident was rolling his eyes at yet another cliched portrayal of the criminal underworld of the Windy City, this time with a medical twist. The foundation of “The Mob Doctor” is not that ridiculous in that there could...
