‘The Saint Of Second Chances’ Review: Brilliant Netflix Documentary About A Failing Man’s Redemption
It wouldn’t be wrong of me to say Netflix’s greatest strength is the way they tell real-life stories. Their latest documentary, The Saint of Second Chances, is not only another glorious testament to that; it is probably one of the best documentaries to come out of Netflix yet. The selling point about the documentary is its accessibility. Whether you are a fan of baseball or not, you are bound to enjoy this Jeff Malmberg and Morgan Neville-directed documentary. It is extremely entertaining, very engaging, and brilliantly made from the start to the finish.
Every baseball aficionado probably knows about the infamous “Disco Demolition”, which happened way back on July 12, 1979. It was the brainchild of Mike Veeck, who was in charge of the PR and promotional activities of the Chicago White Sox. The idea seemed like a brilliant one in terms of bringing in the bucks from a full-house stadium,...

"This is the true story of a family of baseball hustlers." "All that laughter and fun was going to save us." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary called The Saint of Second Chances, arriving for streaming in September. An intriguing doc film telling an unexpected story about someone most people probably aren't familiar with. Mike Veeck, the son of legendary Major League Baseball owner Bill Veeck, blows up his father's career and then spends the next few decades learning the value of a second chance. Co-directed by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg, narrated by Jeff Daniels, and featuring Charlie Day starring as a younger Mike Veeck (in recreation scenes), The Saint of Second Chances is wildly unexpected, full of heart, and keeps you laughing through a comeback story unlike any other. I love a good doc that plays out with so many twists & turns, without knowing anything about it.

Watch as many documentaries as I do, and you’re bound to see the Chicago White Sox’s notorious Disco Demolition Night come up in a wide variety of contexts. Sometimes the 1979 fiasco is used as a case study in racism and the marginalization of Black voices in music. Sometimes it’s used as a case study in homophobia.
In Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg’s new documentary The Saints of Second Chances, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, Disco Demolition Night is reduced to an origin story. Yes, Mike Veeck is remorseful that anybody has read negative subtext into the ill-fated promotion, but he makes it clear that he just wanted to impress his father and pack a stadium. Like several dark things in The Saint of Second Chances, any other insinuations get lost in a sea of stylistic flourishes and heart-tugging button pushing.
Don’t get me wrong,...

Life is, thankfully for us, full of second chances. Humans are forever figuring out how to get it right, but there’s no denying that the universe finds a way to be on our side when our hearts are in the right place. There lies the emotional core of Jeff Malmberg and Morgan Neville’s new Netflix documentary “The Saint of Second Chances.”
The film is a mirror for those of us who have ever had to pick up the pieces after massive failure, and with life being the way it is, it isn’t going to be very hard for this film to find people who develop a cathartic connection to it. “The Saint of Second Chances” is a once-in-a-lifetime documentary for sports that meshes the ordinary with the extraordinary in a way that only the messy hands of time can. Holidays loom, but don’t fear TBS marathons of A Christmas Story. If, like me, you once enacted some good and let studio classics stream on Criterion during family Christmas, you know the trip home will be easier with December’s additions. It is easy, perhaps, to take Mickey Mouse for granted, both as an icon and a character. His image, as Disney parks fans will tell you, is everywhere: on the sides of buildings, in nooks and crannies, on t-shirts, in flower beds, up in the clouds.
Though omnipresent, Mickey has had a rich, tumultuous journey, on and off screen, and Jeff Malmberg’s new documentary “Mickey: The Story of a Mouse” takes viewers on a winding road through Mickey’s almost 100-year-old journey.
In 1928, a pioneering little critter manned a river steamboat in a charming little animated musical titled “Steamboat Willie” — the first of its kind to be set to sound. He was industrious, charming and whimsical, without being conniving, precocious or silly. This was Mickey Mouse, who’d been previously introduced in a short called “Plane Crazy,...

Disney+’s “Sketchbook,” streaming now, is a fascinating and emotional look at the artists behind your favorite Disney characters.
The set-up is simple: each episode has an animator instructing you on how to draw a Disney character. Their instructions are informative and easy to follow, but the real treat of each episode is getting to know the animators a little better. You hear them talk about coming to the studio and navigating various productions, all the while offering helpful hints and gentle encouragement.
One of the very best episodes involves Eric Goldberg, the animator behind the Genie in “Aladdin” (the character he instructs you how to draw), Louis in “The Princess and the Frog” and Phil in “Hercules,” among many others. (He also co-directed “Pocahontas” and directed two segments of the underrated “Fantasia 2000.”) Incredibly, he stuck with the studio after it almost exclusively switched to computer animation, providing 2D...

There are few figures in popular culture that carry as much raw emotional power as Mickey Mouse.
As a character, Mickey Mouse has engendered love and laughter from countless viewers for more than 90 years in popular culture. As a corporate symbol, Mickey Mouse has elicited more complicated emotions. Both are grappled with in “Mickey: The Story of a Mouse,” a new documentary that will debut at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, on Saturday and will be headed to Disney+ later this year.
Director Jeff Malmberg wrestles with the uber-Mickey – the Mickey that embodies the American ideals of optimism and kindness, and the Mickey that stands for some occasionally iffy practices by a multinational corporation.
Along the way, he also dips into the ways that Mickey has changed throughout the years, from his feisty early years to having his edges sanded off as he became an icon more than...

The partnership comes ahead of the release of McCartney, 3, 2, 1, a six-part documentary series from Endeavor Content that saw Rubin and the Beatle explore the latter’s music and marked the first time that The Beatles’ original master tapes left Abbey Road. It launches July 16 on Hulu.
Rubin, who co-founded Def Jam Recordings, starred in and exec produced Shangri-La, a four-part doc series for Showtime directed by Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg that was set at Rubin’s Malibu recording studio.

After taking a trip to Mister Rogers’ neighborhood, Morgan Neville is visiting the vaunted halls of Shangri-La — Rick Rubin’s iconic Malibu recording studio nestled in the remote, beachside wilderness and home to legendary sessions from artists like Adele, Eminem, Jay-z, Lady Gaga, and more.
The four-part documentary series “Shangri-La” is a collaboration between Neville, who directed the first two episodes, Jeff Malmberg (who directs the last two), and Rubin himself, who’s on board as an executive producer. Per Showtime’s official synopsis, the series focuses on the creative conversation and emotional side of making music, as Neville interviews Rubin and his visiting musicians inside the peaceful estate.
Rubin co-founded Def Jam Records while enrolled at NYU in the ’80s, and the bearded producer helped launch everyone from Public Enemy to the Beastie Boys under the label. He went on to run American Recording and Columbia Records, but it...

This year, the SXSW Film Festival’s selection committee sorted through 2,500 feature film submissions and 6,500 shorts to arrive at its program of 134 features and 110 shorts, which will unspool over nine days beginning March 8. For a festival that was initially seen as a younger sibling to the Austin conference’s music component, the film offerings are impressively deep, highlighted by world premieres that include Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer’s “Pet Sematary,” Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart,” Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Highwaymen” and Jordan Peele’s “Us.”
Yet ask festival director Janet Pierson about the imposing lineup, and she’s quick to note that the festival has actually slimmed down from previous years.

Showtime is laying down tracks for a new docuseries spotlighting Rick Rubin, the record producer who has worked with seemingly everyone from Beastie Boys and Run-d.M.C. to Black Sabbath, Slayer, Johnny Cash and Lady Gaga. Directed by Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?), it’s slated to air later this year.
Working-titled Shangri-La after his infamous Malibu studio, the series will screen at SXSW in March as a work-in-progress.
The series is billed as an all-access pass into Rubin’s creative process, giving viewers a taste of what it’s like to be produced by the music world’s most singular voice.
A tad hyperbolic?
Maybe, but since breaking out as the collegiate co-founder of Def Jam Recordings in the mid-1980s, Rubin has produced some of rock, hip hop and pop’s most popular and influential artists. He has won the Producer of the Year...

It was a busy morning for precursor awards today, wasn’t it? Not only are we still recovering from what went on at the Golden Globes last night, a quartet of important stepping stones to Oscar announced their nominees. The nominations came from the Ace Eddies (the Guild for film editors), the American Society of Cinematographers (the Guild for cinematography), the Art Directors Guild, and of course, the Writers Guild. The latter, as usual, had disqualified some high profile contenders, so that’s important to keep in mind, but the former three have given us a decent look at the likeliest Academy Award nominees in Best Production Design and Best Film Editing, respectively. The four precursors represented Guilds that actually correspond with Academy members, so keep that in mind. Ace Eddie and Adg separate into multiple categories, so that’s worth making note of, as well. Also, as you might imagine,...

Over the course of his career, Steve Carell has taken on a gamut of different roles, from Dunder Mifflin's offbeat salesman Michael Scott to a cartoon supervillain turned curmudgeonly dad. In his upcoming biopic, Welcome to Marwen, the actor inhabits the role of Mark Hogancamp, a man who builds a miniature town of dolls after nearly dying from a violent attack. And yes, Hogancamp's real story is just as heartbreaking and full of resilience as one would imagine.
On April 8, 2000, five men beat Hogancamp outside of a bar in Kingston, NY, after he told them that he was a cross-dresser. The attack resulted in Hogancamp spending nine days in a coma and 40 days in the hospital. Along with post-traumatic stress disorder, he suffered brain damage that left him with little recall of his past life, which includes his experiences with homelessness, struggles with alcoholism, and past relationships. In Welcome to Marwen, director Robert Zemeckis uses the real-life story of artist and photographer Mark Hogancamp as a fantastical canvas to interrogate his own career. Reckoning with one’s legacy is a move typical of an auteur operating in their “late period,” but Zemeckis doesn’t take a direct route to the self-critique. Instead, he papers it over a feature-length dramatic portrait of a subject who, like in his film The Walk, was previously the focus of an acclaimed documentary. Stilted and occasionally mawkish, Welcome to Marwen will likely be considered a failure by critics and audiences alike, which is a shame because, while certainly not a success, it represents a fascinating reflection on the double-edged value of escapism.
Hogancamp’s story, first explored in Jeff Malmberg’s 2010 documentary Marwencol, in brief: After being beaten within an inch of his life by five men outside of a bar for...

Based on the story of a man beaten so mercilessly he had to construct a fantasy world in order to survive his great pain and suffering, Robert Zemeckis’ insipid “Welcome To Marwen” is a painfully schmaltzy misjudged disaster, and superficial retelling that dishonors a layered and agonizing story about trauma. Inspired by the true story told in Jeff Malmberg‘s “Marewencol,” Zemeckis’ movie takes its cues from that doc, almost note for note in many instances, but comes out the other end with a sentimental, shallow, and fatuous reading of the doc’s inspiring story of recovery and resilience.

In the rare event when a major Hollywood studio advertises one of its films as “the most original movie of the year” — as Universal has done in the trailer for “Welcome to Marwen” — it tends to be code for: “We spent a ton of money on something that we have absolutely no idea how to sell.” And while that was certainly the case here, it’s hard not to sympathize with the poor souls in the marketing department, who were tasked with promoting a story that director Robert Zemeckis had no idea how to tell. In hindsight, it seems they did the best they could. As disconcerting as it was when the previews for “Welcome to Marwen” reduced the complicated and ineffably human saga of Mark Hogancamp into a glossy inspirational fable about the power of friendship, it’s even more disconcerting to find that the film itself does much the same thing.

Robert Zemeckis tries too hard to sentimentalise Mark Hogancamp’s story, meaning what might have been a complicated drama plays like a dud Forrest Gump
The remarkable career of artist and photographer Mark Hogancamp has been turned into an elaborate and misjudged movie of baffling pass-agg ickiness and pointlessness. It sentimentalises a story already told in Jeff Malmberg’s award-winning 2010 documentary Marwencol – and it plays to Steve Carell’s terrible weakness as an actor. He can play great comedy or irony, as in Anchorman, and he can be brilliant in a really dark role, as in Foxcatcher. But he’s awful when he has to be sweetly life-affirming and adorable.
In 2000, Hogancamp was savagely beaten and left for dead by homophobic bigots outside a bar, after he told them he liked cross-dressing. He miraculously recovered from his coma, though with his memory mostly shot, and then with heroic creativity worked...

Fans of Jeff Malmberg's documentary Marwencol (2010) might understandably approach the Hollywoodization of its true-life tale, Robert Zemeckis' Welcome to Marwen, with trepidation. The background: In April 2000, upstate New York resident Mark Hogancamp was beaten to within an inch of his life after he drunkenly told some bar patrons he enjoyed wearing women's shoes. He spent nine days in a coma and over a month in a hospital recovering. The attack effectively erased all memory of his past and eradicated his addiction to alcohol.
