A bright, benevolent light went out on December 4, 2022, when Bob McGrath passed away at the age of 90. For 47 years, he maintained a residence as Bob Johnson on "Sesame Street," where, at an amazing 130-episode-per-season clip (until 1998), he taught children the joy of music. Whenever Bob dropped by Gordon and Susan Robinson's apartment, or popped his head into Mr. Hooper's shop, you knew a sing-a-long was imminent. He had a load of songs in his arsenal, and not a bum one in the bunch. But as a loyal viewer in the late 1970s, I always perked up when Bob busted out a rendition of "One of These Things," "A Face" or "The People in Your Neighborhood."
The vast majority of my earliest memories center on movies, television and music. I retain fragments of going to see "Star Wars" in 1977, rocking to and fro in front of my record player...

“I don’t know if ‘Sesame Street’ would still be here if the muppets weren’t part of it from the beginning,” says David Kamp in ABC’s “50 Years of Sunny Days”
ABC’s new “Sesame Street” documentary “50 Years of Sunny Days” opened up the world of Jim Henson’s muppets in a never-before-seen way. Produced by Time Studios, the Monday night special took viewers through many of the show’s iconic moments, such as original Hooper store owner Jim Hooper’s death in 1982 and the introduction of characters with autism and AIDS. And everyone from “Sesame Street” executives to former cast members to celebrities like John Oliver, Questlove, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Angelina Jolie, Whoopi Goldberg, W. Kamau Bell, Gloria Estefan, and more shared their own experiences growing up on what they favorably referred to as “The Street.”

What’s the magic formula that has made “Sesame Street” such an enduring hit? Midway through Marilyn Agrelo’s “Street Gang,” star Roscoe Orman offers a succinct answer: “serious intent and joy.” Initially conceived of as a then-revolutionary combination of children’s entertainment and educational instruction — literally inventing the idea of educational TV — “Sesame Street” has only maintained and expanded its lofty ambitions over the course of more than five decades. That success, Agrelo’s film sagely argues, was no accident, but instead the product of careful, considerate, and forward-thinking planning. It may be magic, but boy, does it take work.
While Agrelo’s documentary, based on Michael Davis’ similarly exhaustive nonfiction book of the same name, does occasionally nod to the price of that work, the film mostly tracks the story of what happens when a good idea is undertaken by good people. Many of those good people might...

Sundance always has pride of position when it comes to the festival calendar: as the first major fest of the year, it often sets the tone for the 12 months of far-flung festival galas and premieres to come. But the 2020 edition of the Park City, Utah, event has an unusual distinction: it was one of only a few fests to take place as normal before the cloud of Covid obscured all the face-to-face interactions that make a film festival more than just a place to watch way too many movies.
Having thus had the better part of a year to prepare for the new normal, the fest is now hoping to do more than just offer a string lineup of virtual screenings. Instead, Sundance will attempt to replicate as many of its in-person events as possible online, from a full slate of panels and Q&As, to meet-and-greets, VR experiences, musical...
