Hotel Cocaine is the story of Roman Compte, a Cuban exile and general manager of The Mutiny Hotel, the glamorous epicenter of the Miami cocaine scene of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. The Mutiny Hotel was Casablanca on cocaine.
Businessmen, politicians, international narcos, CIA and FBI agents, models, sports stars, and musicians all frequented the hotel and its glitzy nightclub and restaurant. At the center of it all was Compte, who did his best to keep it all going and fulfill his own American dream.

It was a busy hour for Eddie Diaz during 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 5.
The firefighter found himself in a bit of a crisis when his relationship with his newly live-in girlfriend Marisol hit a snag, and he had to do some serious thinking about his past and how it's affecting him now and, ultimately, how it could affect the future.
I caught up with Ryan Guzman on a recent Zoom to break down the hour, including Eddie's relationship revelations, the dynamic between Eddie and Buck, and the importance of Eddie's relationship with Bobby.
When I chatted with Ryan before 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 1, he talked about seeing a lighter and more hopeful Eddie, which has definitely been the case thus far through this truncated season.
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 4, in particular, saw a very happy and loose Eddie as he developed a friendship with former 118 firefighter Tommy Kinard.

There's something to be said for 9-1-1 managing to hit the most absurd comedic beats in one scene and transition directly into the heartfelt the next, and it does not feel quite as unbelievable as it sounds.
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 5 was an interesting hour, to say the least, with three competing storylines almost fighting for dominance -- some hitting their mark more than others.
This was another heavy character-driven hour, which again, coming off the heels of the three-part extravaganza, felt very earned.
For Hen, 9-1-1 Season 7 has seen her ups and downs (mostly ups), as Interim Captain highlighted, but it hasn't ventured much into her home life.
That changed here as Hen and Karen prepared to bring a newborn into the Wilson household, and you could tell just how joyful and grateful they were as they sat around the Buckley-Han table and perused through hand-me-downs.

A sus 60 años, Marisol (Rueda), Es una entrenadora emblemática de gimnasia rítmica de élite, la mejor. It's great to have Chicago Med back, but Marcel's conflict with Washington was a lot of nothing.
On Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 7, Marcel accused Goodwin of siding with her boyfriend instead of with medical science. Then, everything changed for the patient, and the conflict evaporated.
Will this rear its ugly head some other time? It moved so quickly that it felt pointless despite some great performances.
Marcel and Washington's argument was a classic medical drama trope. TV hospitals are full of medical personnel who think surgery is too risky and surgeons who think the patient's prognosis will be poor if they don't go under the knife right away.
In this case, it was complicated by Sharon's relationship with Dr. Washington, which made Marcel believe she was not being objective in her decision about who to listen to.
Washington's plan initially made a lot of sense. If radiation could shrink the tumor,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the 9-1-1 Season 7 premiere “Abandon ‘Ships.”] Listen, if there’s one ‘ship we’re not ready to abandon, it’s Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause), though they do have some things to work out in the 9-1-1 premiere. Fortunately, all is well for Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms), as well as Chimney (Kenneth Choi) and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt)—though multiple people need to tell him that!—and we’re not at all attached to Buck (Oliver Stark) and Eddie’s (Ryan Guzman) love interests, which is a good thing in one case. The world of Marisol Riviera comes crashing down when she finds out about her being an illegal immigrant in America. The hopes of a girl full of dreams about a better future are crushed under the brutal machinery of the law. Kevin Abrams, who directed the film, kept it simple and did not sugarcoat the issue of racism in the United States. The satisfactory acting skills of Esmeralda Camargo, Liana Mendoza, Ricky Catter, and others have been an important aspect, making the film stand out. The movie keeps us wondering about the atrocities that the refugees have to face on a regular basis. Some other similar films circling the aspect of the refugee crisis include First They Killed My Father, Beasts of No Nation, Refugee, and others among the top-notch. What happens to Marisol? Does she keep running from the government, or does she give in? Let us have a look at her journey!

There have been at least a hundred horror movies where we have seen a doll as the primary force of haunting. This is one of the oldest genre tropes that will probably stay relevant for at least a hundred more years, if not more. And we can’t deny the effectiveness of the doll horror genre either. The Communion Girl, the latest Spanish horror offering, is yet another fruit of this doll-horror genre that has nothing particularly new to offer but manages to deliver by sticking to the basics. Let’s take a closer look at this one.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Movie?
The Communion Girl opens with this girl, Sonia, being haunted by this creepy doll wearing communion clothes. Sonia is clearly under a lot of stress, and there are some sort of strange marks on her body. She gets further agitated when her boyfriend comes to visit her.

Halfway into The Out-Laws, I was wondering if I should get a drink and watch the rest after getting a little buzzed because that would have certainly made this experience more profound. Not that it is any less than when you watch it dead sober. But there is one condition. You need to have a penchant for bad movies, like me. That is the only way you would enjoy The Out-Laws. It is a very obvious bad movie, which fits right into the “so bad that it’s good” genre. This is a movie where a man mistakes another man’s genitals for a ripcord while sky-diving. The same man repeatedly gets his buttocks grabbed by his fiancé’s parents as if nothing happened. Then, during an all-important heist, this man uses a water gun instead of a real one. Yes, it is that kind of movie. With the freedom of R-rating,...

Mayans M.C. Season 5 Episode 6 Review: My Eyes Filled And Then Closed On The Last Of Childhood Tears
Is there such a thing as peace and happiness for anyone in this story?
Mayans M.C. Season 5 Episode 6 gave us some clear progression for our key players, but it also left us with several emotional cliffhangers that will surely propel the final four episodes of the series.
At this point in the story, I'm resigned to the fact that people in these scenarios rarely find happiness and that the rest of this story will be anything but that.
E.Z. showing up at Angel's and telling him to get in the car and to leave his gun at home was chilling. Look at it from Angel's perspective:
He'd just told Sofia they had to do something to ensure E.Z. didn't make any more bad decisions.
If you watch Mayans M.C. online, you know that E.Z. has done some terrible things, but he's also done plenty to keep his...

Netflix’s The Out-Laws trailer features a bank robbery, car chase, an awkward meeting of potential in-laws, and a reference to James Bond #5. Plus, the trailer includes a very handsome Pierce Brosnan, a description that – according to Richard Kind – isn’t a compliment.
The action comedy comes from director Tyler Spindel and stars Brosnan (Mamma Mia!), Kind (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of). Ellen Barkin (Animal Kingdom), Julie Hagerty (Marriage Story), Lil Rey Howery (Rel), Blake Anderson (Woke), Lauren Lapkus (Orange is the New Black), and Laci Mosley (A Black Lady Sketch Show) also star.

UK post-hardcore outfit Static Dress have inked a major deal with Roadrunner Records, which is reissuing the band’s 2022 debut album Rouge Carpet Disaster in an expanded “Redux” edition, due out September 15th.
To mark the signing, the band offered up one of the new tracks included on the upcoming collection, an updated version of “Courtney, just relax,” featuring Canadian hardcore band World of Pleasure.
The song showcases Static Dress’ ability to create murky and atmospheric soundscapes out of densely layered screams and an onslaught of bent post-hardcore guitar phrases. The compositional complexities should also cater to fans of progressive metal and mathy metalcore, with Static Dress lying at the ambiguous intersection of these various sub-genres.
The band broke onto the scene with 2021’s Prologue… (Comic Book Soundtrack) EP — an ambition project that involved an actual comic book. Static Dress followed that up last year with the independently released full-length Rouge Carpet Disaster,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the 9-1-1 Season 6 finale “Pay It Forward.”] 9-1-1 ends its run on Fox with just the type of finale we’ve come to expect from the drama. Almost the entire 118 is injured when an overpass collapses: Buck’s (Oliver Stark) face is bloody, Hen (Aisha Hinds) has a concussion, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) has broken ribs, Chimney (Kenneth Choi) is impaled, and Bobby (Peter Krause) has a probable AC joint sprain. They’re all back at work by the end. As for their personal lives, Buck — who delivers Kameron (Chelsea Kane) and Connor’s (Colin McCalla) baby on his couch — and Natalia (Annelise Cepero) are giving it a try; Eddie calls Marisol (Edy Ganem) and sets up a date; Hen and Karen (Tracie Thoms) are fostering a baby girl; Chimney and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) are planning their wedding at home; and Bobby and Athena (...

The Academy Awards are this Sunday and it’s actually been a great year for film and particularly actors. So many of them have been recognized with nominations or wins, between the Oscars and the SAG Awards, not to mention BAFTA, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Gotham and Independent Spirit Awards.
But with every great performance honored by a major group, there are so many more that are deserving, but seem to elude awards recognition. So going off the four existing acting categories, I wanted to suggest some other names from the year 2022 that deserve a look. A Man Called Otto is a movie directed by Marc Forster starring Tom Hanks.
A remake whose only appeal lies in seeing Tom Hanks handle the role of a grouch… to reconvert the character to his own kind, sensitive and simple style.
One of its charms: we get to see Tom Hanks’ son, Truman Hanks, play Otto as a young man.
Storyline
Otto is one of those neighbors no one wants to have: grumpy, picky, gossipy and bitter. A new family moves into a nearby house, which will cause Otto’s life, about to end, to change forever.
Movie Review
A Man Called Otto is one of those easy, simplistic, crowd-pleasing movies that give “good vibes” everywhere and that, in essence and without satisfying almost anyone, leave a feeling that the world can still be a nice place full of nice people with a charming neighborhood.

A Man Called Otto is a ‘large hearted’ romantic-comedy-drama story directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by David Magee. It is the 2nd film adaptation of the 2012 novel ‘A Man Called Ove’ by Fredrik Backman after the 2015 Swedish film of the same name. The film stars Tom Hanks as Anderson Otto, with Mariana Treviño, Rachel Keller, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in key characters.
Story
Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), is an old eccentric widower. Why eccentric? After retiring from a steel company, he plans suicide for having lost his wife Sonya, a schoolteacher, six months back. Otto had met Sonya on a train after returning a dropped book to her.
In the opening scene that sets the tone of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks)’s character, he is shown intending to buy a specific measurement of rope at a hardware store, only to learn that the store’s pricing policies won’t...

(Spoiler alert: This article contains Season 1 spoilers for “Freeridge”).
“Freeridge,” the spinoff to Netflix’s coming-of-age dramedy “On My Block,” is not trying to recreate the mystical realism of its predecessor, according to leads Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz, who anchor the series with their brutally honest portrayal of two sisters often at odds with one another.
“We were all huge fans,” Mejia — best-known for her scene-stealing turns in “Abbott Elementary” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — told TheWrap of “On My Block.” “Funny enough, we knew — we were casted in it — and we all watched the fourth season together. Oh, my God, justice for Spooky! But that’s neither here nor there.”
Despite following a new core four in the title neighborhood as they uncover the mythical happenings around them, co-creator Lauren Iungerich was steadfast in her belief that “Freeridge” would neither replicate nor rehash the four seasons of the show that established its universe.

The cast of the "On My Block" spinoff, "Freeridge," promised the new show would bring all the high jinks, mystery, romance, and life lessons that fans of the original loved, and the series - which hit Netflix on Feb. 2 - certainly delivers.
"Freeridge" season one follows a new core four of high-school friends - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Inez) - as they navigate friendship, love, class conflict, grief, and - believe it or not - a curse wreaking havoc on their lives.
With appearances from familiar "On My Block" characters sprinkled throughout the fast-paced season - like Ruby's parents, Geny (Paula Garces) and Ruben (Eric Neil Gutierrez), as Gina and Inez's neighbors; Jamal (Brett Gray) calling in with some Roller World intel; and an Abuelita look-alike - "Freeridge" packs a punch for old and new fans alike.

Freeridge is a comedy series created by Lauren Iungerich, Jamie Dooner and Jamie Uyeshiro. It stars Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Shiv Pai and Bryana Salaz. Freeridge is a different kind of comedy, with very different kinds of characters.
Forget about perfect families living in perfect mansions with blonde bangs in the wind. These four teen friends fight with each other, have real problems and they buy things in supermarkets that offer bargains, and, they have a problem: an ancient box that ruins their lives and makes them be victims of a curse, so they will try to do everything possible and impossible to get rid of it.
Freeridge is amusing although a little conventional and it tries to break away from pre-established rules, but always remains within conventional patterns for teen comedy.

To read the logline of Freeridge, you might assume it’d fit neatly into Netflix’s extensive catalog of supernatural teen shows, alongside Wednesday or Stranger Things. Its central premise involves a curse, one that our 15ish-year-old heroes fear has befallen them thanks to a mysterious old box and their increasingly desperate efforts to undo its effects.
But the “ooky-spooky” stuff turns out to be less the main event than the clothesline on which the On My Block spinoff hangs its real, relatable concerns: the uncertainty of the future, the confusion of young love, the comfort and the burden of family. And while Freeridge emerges as a lighter show than its predecessor, it shares the same empathetic heart, playful sense of humor and, above all, deeply endearing affection for its young leads.
The unofficial leader of Freeridge‘s central quartet is Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), the type of problem-solving go-getter...

Mariana Treviño, who portrays Marisol in “A Man Called Otto,” alongside Tom Hanks’ titular character, traces her character’s influence and positive impact on the central curmudgeon from the beginning of the film.
Marisol immigrated to the United States from Mexico, met her husband Tommy (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and moves their family of four to Otto’s neighborhood just in time. Marisol and Tommy, and their daughters Luna (Christiana Montoya) and Abbie (Alessandra Perez) brighten and challenge Otto’s routine.
“They just kind of roll in, you know, like the car. It’s very symbolic how the car just kind of barges into the neighborhood and it’s all over the place and it’s getting on the sidewalk,” Treviño told TheWrap. “This is the kind of expansive energy that they [bring] into the neighborhood, and into Otto’s life. In A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks stars as a grunty older man named Otto, who’s sort of a dick. He’s a little bit of a busybody. He lives on a quiet street in suburban Pittsburgh where everybody seems to know each other and where you need a parking permit in your window to park your car, otherwise somebody (Otto) will notice. The older residents, Otto among them, have a bit of history. This does not prevent Otto from believing that everybody in his midst is something of an idiot.

“A Man Called Otto” star Tom Hanks did not take the responsibility of portraying his character’s suicide attempts lightly.
“A Man Called Otto,” adapted from the best-selling novel “A Man Called Ove” by Frederik Backman and also based on the Swedish feature film, follows Otto (Hanks), a grumpy old man who clings to rules and order to prevent unnecessary chaos. Deep down, he misses his late wife Sonja (Rachel Keller), who challenged his black-and-white thinking with her colorful, sweet personality.
Otto wants nothing more than to join Sonya in the afterlife, a desire that drives him to multiple suicide attempts in different ways.
“Because it was firmly rooted in both the novel in the original movie, it is part of what the story has to be. The responsibility that comes along with that, we did not take that lightly at all,” Hanks said in an interview with TheWrap. “Because on one hand,...

A version of this story about Mariana Treviño and “A Man Called Otto” first appeared in the Awards Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When Mexican actress Mariana Treviño first auditioned for the role of Marisol in Marc Forster’s “A Man Called Otto,” she was by herself in a hotel room in Spain, isolated and depressed because of the pandemic. She had nobody to help her put two scenes on tape, so she shot the scenes in her hotel room playing all the characters herself.
And Forster saw something in that one-woman show that made sense for the role of a young, pregnant, frazzled but indomitable mother of two who finds a way to carry on and doesn’t have time for the dramas of Tom Hanks’ Otto, whose perpetual crankiness turns out to be a way of compensating for suicidal depression after the death of his wife.

Tom Hanks has worked his high-wattage, regular-guy-hero amiability for so long that he was bound to experiment with a year like 2022 eventually. In the summer, he gave us an oily, flesh-packed Colonel Tom Parker with that strange barbed-wire accent in “Elvis,” then he took on Geppetto in the year’s other, forgettable “Pinocchio,” and now he’s been fitted for grumpypants, frown lines, and a self-made noose as a suicidal sourpuss in “A Man Called Otto.”
But we know Hanks by now, and what kind of curmudgeon he’d want to play, which means you don’t have to be familiar with the source material of “Otto” to guess within the first few minutes — when he’s being obnoxious to a perfectly kind hardware store cashier, but in that isn’t-it-cute-how-mean-he-is way — that this is one of those movies typically described in terms of “surrendering” to “charms,” and “winning you over.

In Marc Forster’s A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks plays a grump. He patrols his neighborhood with a scowl on his face, hoping to poke fun and ultimately subvert our usual expectations of one of America’s favorite actors. Hanks dons this face happy to be the villain for a change, even if every audience member knows he will turn out to be the hero. For Forster and his leading man, the drama is a step down from previous work, an emotionally telegraphed, near-manipulative adaptation of a better book already adapted in Sweden to far greater results.
Otto is a friendless widower, brought back into the community by his new neighbors, a family led by Marisol, elevated by a superb Mariana Treviño. Marisol recruits Otto into her life, an opportunity for him to show his heart and humanity, providing a reason for this depressed man to keep living. And...

Chicago – Tom Hanks finds himself – as the title character – stranded in a slough of artificiality in this clumsy manipulative attempt at a crowd pleaser. He plays a grump in “A Man Named Otto,” a remake of a 2015 Swedish film. The setting has been transferred to the grey rust belt of Pittsburgh, and Hanks is a widower with a lot of chips on his shoulder about the world today.

Otto sees himself surrounded by idiots. He also has both the obstinance and time to complain, whether its cars driving around his housing complex’s gate, or being charged for six feet of an item when he only wanted five feet. There is something rather ironic about the fact that Hollywood’s nicest man (now confirmed) is playing such a miserable old fart in Marc Forster’s A Man Called Otto, a remake of the 2015 Swedish drama A Man Called Ove.

Plot: A curmudgeonly widower named Otto (Tom Hanks) becomes entwined in the lives of his needy neighbors, much to his (initial) dismay.
Review: Early on in A Man Called Otto, there’s a scene where Tom Hanks, as the cantankerous Otto, visits a home hardware store to buy himself some rope. He plans to go home and hang himself, but once he gets to the cash, he has a long argument about how they’re charging him for more rope than he needs. This scene is depicted as “wacky,” and it just about sums up all of the issues I have with the film. In it, Tom Hanks’s character is so depressed that we’re supposed to believe that once he gets home with this rope, he will kill himself. The way Marc Forster directs this scene and Hanks acts it, this sequence feels like something out of a sitcom,...

When you have an international best seller that was on the Nyt list for 42 weeks and then made into a multi-Oscar-nominated Swedish film that became the third-most successful in the history of that country Ingmar Bergman called home, you might wonder what the need was for an English-language American remake. The answer is a chance to give Tom Hanks a role he can run with and, more important, to bring a very human, often funny, character-driven story back to light in a time that needs it more than ever.

Warning: This review contains spoilers for "A Man Called Otto," as well as sensitive, potentially triggering content.
In Tom Hanks' wildly varied film career, he's played everything from a lawyer dying of AIDS ("Philadelphia") to a shopkeeper in love ("Sleepless In Seattle") to an unlikely influencer of history ("Forrest Gump"). He's even starred in a very informal plane crash trilogy, as a pilot stuck landing a crashing plane ("Sully"), a man stuck on an island after a plane crash ("Cast Away"), and a man stuck in an airport after a plane landing ("The Terminal"). In "A Man Called Otto," based on the 2012 Fredrik Backman novel "A Man Called Ove" and the 2015 Swedish film of that same title, Tom Hanks takes on his least characteristic role yet: that of a grumpy old widower.

Despite recent reports to the contrary, Tom Hanks will always be known as the nicest guy in Hollywood. But is Tom Hanks such a “nice guy” that he can only play against type in the most obvious, literal way? A murderous villain is too far a stretch; a double-crossing commander is perhaps not juicy enough. No, when Tom Hanks wants to really throw a sour wrench onto his all-American good-guy bread and butter, he has to play a grumpy old man. Not just any grumpy old man: an embittered, persnickety, widower with a secret heart of gold. The question isn’t whether he pulls it off well enough, but if he should have tried in the first place.
