Boxing great Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez is teaming with Cartuna and Campanario Entertainment to develop an adult animated series inspired by his life and career, Variety has learned exclusively.
“I’m excited to see my story and my career brought to TV through this incredible medium,” Álvarez said. “It will give my loyal fans a new way to follow my journey to the top of boxing and can also bring new followers to this beautiful sport.”
Erick Galindo will write and executive produce the series. James and Adam Belfer, the co-heads of Cartuna, will executive produce along with along with Mike Flavin, senior vice president of development at Cartuna. Jaime Dávila and Rico Martínez will executive produce for Campanario Entertainment. The project is currently in development and is expected to be taken out to networks and streamers later this year.

Endemol North America’s digital network, Endemol Beyond USA, has added new talent to its team. TV producer-director Rico Martinez from Maker Studios joined the company as its new chief programming officer. Martinez will be in charge of Endemol Beyond USA’s content and programming with an emphasis on comedy, scripted originals, music, and reality. As such, he’ll be helping some of the company’s talent like Pitbull, beauty YouTuber Michelle Phan, and Viner Brittany Furlan create premium content for their fans. YouTube multi-channel network Maker Studios just added another name to its growing laundry list of mainstream celebrity talent with which its inked online video-related deals. Margaret Cho now joins the likes of Snoop Dogg, Robert De Niro, and more in calling Maker her YouTube liaison. Variety announced last week Cho is set to launch her very own 13-episode, scripted series on July 3 on her very own YouTube channel. Exclusive: MTV has ordered a pilot for Little Esther, a docu-comedy project starring young comedian Esther Povitsky. The pilot, which is completing production, is being produced by Stone & Company Entertainment. It chronicles Povitsky’s relationship with her (mostly male) young standup comedian friends, providing a glimpse into the young La comedy scene. Povitsky was discovered while Stone & Co was casting another pilot for MTV. Povitsky executive produces Little Esther with Scott A. Stone (The Joe Schmo Show), Rico Martinez (Viva La Bam) and John Mass of Oasis Media Group. Povitsky’s managers Lee Kernis and Brian Stern of Brillstein Entertainment Partners serve as Consulting Producers. MTV is known for giving shots to young comedians. It has an upcoming series starring Bo Burnham. Esther is known for her viral videos, in which she ask incredibly inappropriate questions of everyday people. Oxygen has greenlighted Best Ink, a competition reality series featuring 12 tattoo artists competing for a cash prize. The hourlong project, originally announced as in development at Oxygen’s upfront in April, has received an eight-episode order for a winter premiere. Former American Idol contestant Kimberly Caldwell, described as a “tattoo fanatic,” has been tapped as host. Tattoo artist Joe Capobianco will serve as a head judge, joined by model/tattoo-shop owner Sabina Kelley. Bunim/Murray is producing, with Jonathan Murray, Gil Goldschein and Rico Martinez serving as executive producers.

MTV has greenlighted a slate of scripted and reality series and has renewed three freshman shows.
The network said Tuesday that it has ordered to series "Downtown Girls," "Megadrive," the Ashton Kutcher-produced "American Idiots," the scripted comedy "Hard Times" and an untitled comedy/variety project starring Rob Hoffman.
On the renewal front, the freshmen "She Really Going Out With Him?" -- inspired by the site Hot Chicks With Douchebags -- and "Silent Library," based on a Japanese game show, have each been picked up for 20 episodes. "Teen Cribs," an offshoot of the network's venerable series "MTV Cribs," has been picked up for 40 episodes.
"Hard Times," which has received a 12-episode order, marks the first single-camera comedy series for MTV and the first scripted series order under the current revamping of the MTV brand.
