- Joseph V. Mascelli was born on August 1, 1917. He was a cinematographer and director, known for Monstrosity (1963), The Thrill Killers (1964) and Wild Guitar (1962). He died on February 28, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
- His most famous acclaim came in 1965 with the publication of his book "The Five Cs of Cinematography." It has gone through numerous printings and, more than fifty-five years after it was first published, it is still in print and is regarded as one of the classic texts on the subject.
- During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a cinematographer shooting projects such as training films, newsreels, project reports and technical films. He aslo gained extensive experience as an aerial cinematographer.
- His Army experience during World War II led to his being hired by the new U.S. Air Force as a civilian cinematographer and motion picture director.
- His first major assignment as a civilian cinematographer for the Air Force was Operation Crossroads. He shot the aerial footage of the first H-bomb test at Bikini Atoll.
- His Hollywood career included non-theatrical, theatrical and television (commercials and series) projects.
