For those with the temerity to follow it anywhere, Blue Velvet (1986) is as fascinating as it is freakish. It confirms Mr. Lynch's stature as an innovator, a superb technician, and someone best not encountered in a dark alley.
[reviewing Freejack (1992)] Mr. Jagger, managing to combine a sneer and a monotone, and revealing only the occasional flash of humor, is fun to watch but lucky to have other employment.
[reviewing Waterworld (1995)] James Newton Howard's score is so swellingly effusive that it pronounces the film awesome long before the audience can.
