A couple weeks ago, The Arrow in the Head Show hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek praised the “surprisingly excellent” sequel Psycho II (watch that video Here). With the new episode of the show, The Arrow and Lance are returning to the Bates Motel to take in a viewing of Psycho III (watch the movie at This Link). To find out what they had to say about this sequel, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Norman Bates himself, Anthony Perkins, from a screenplay by Charles Edward Pogue, Psycho III has the following synopsis: Former mental patient Norman Bates is once again operating his infamous motel. Assisted by the shifty Duane Duke, Norman keeps up the semblance of being sane and ordinary, but he still holds on to some macabre habits. Eventually, Norman becomes interested in Maureen Coyle, a troubled tenant who’s been staying on a...

It’s time for a new episode of our video series The Black Sheep, and in this one we’re here to discuss the merits of a sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. And it’s not Psycho II, which is widely seen as a surprisingly worthy “twenty-three years later” follow-up. The one we’re looking at today is the less popular Psycho III (watch it Here), which was directed by Anthony Perkins himself. To find out what we had to say about Psycho III, check out the video embedded above.

Photo: ‘Percy Vs Goliath’/Amazon ‘Percy Vs Goliath’ is a live adaptation of the true story of a court case involving a small-town farmer and the giant Gmo company, Monsanto. It revolves around Percy Schmeiser, played by Academy Award winner Christopher Walken. Roberta Maxwell (‘Brokeback Mountain’) plays his wife and brings a lot of heart to this movie. The acclaimed actors, Walken and Maxwell, are the ones who truly make this movie a success. However, the formal elements and the inspiration from real life helps elevate this movie. While ‘Percy Vs Goliath’ is a good movie on paper, it is lifted to another level because of its lighting, its actors, and the true story it's written about. Over the course of the past century, Monsanto discovered a way to farm the American farmer by developing, patenting and supplying genetically modified seeds. Instead of getting its hands dirty in the fields, the company cultivates its yield directly from the land workers, who have virtually no choice but to buy the agrochemical company’s seeds. For the farmers who do it the old-fashioned way — by collecting seeds from last year’s harvest and planting them the next — they risk not only weaker, bug- and weed-susceptible produce, but also being bullied by Monsanto in court.
If you’re savvy enough to recognize what a gross oversimplification that represents of a complex scientific, economic and legal situation, then loosely fact-based “Percy vs Goliath” is probably not the movie for you. “A Mixed Can Of Spinach”
By Raymond Benson
When I first saw Popeye on the big screen on its initial release in December of 1980, I was disappointed and a little appalled. I was (and still am) a huge Robert Altman fan, and I had been expecting great things. The film touted the first motion picture appearance by Robin Williams as well (although he’d had in a small role in a 1977 picture). Anticipation was high.
Popeye received very mixed reviews, but it made a decent amount of money at the box office, and became an object of derision in Hollywood for years. Altman was unable to get big studio backing for over a decade, so he moved to Europe and made small pictures there.
Then—home video turned the movie around. Popeye became a best-selling VHS tape for children, and its reputation improved.

Heart of Glass: Costanzo’s Uncomfortable, Emotional Glance at Madness
Must every cinematic portrait of mental illness be ‘illuminating?’ Your answer to that question may gauge your reaction to Italian director Sergio Costanzo’s New York set domestic horror film, Hungry Hearts, a film best walked into cold. Ambiguity reigns supreme, and for those enjoying a feeling of befuddlement, a rarity in the contemporary cinematic landscape of political correctness, may find Costanzo’s adaptation of Marco Franzoso’s novel a winning concoction. Drawing comparisons to early works by Roman Polanski in how it swiftly throws an unraveling relationship drama into the domestic level of hell, the film instead recalls an era when allowances were made for cinematic representation of strange behaviors and dysfunctional relationships. Surprisingly odd, yet leaving us, roughly, with the feeling of being slapped, perhaps by today’s standards the film can best be understood as the anti-romcom,...

'Yesterday' movie: Leleti Khumalo and Lihle Mvelase. 'Yesterday' movie review: Fantastic central performance in South African AIDS drama To date, nowhere has the AIDS pandemic been felt more strongly than in Sub-Saharan Africa, home to approximately 10 percent of the world's population and two-thirds of the planet's 30-35 million AIDS cases. In the past thirty years, it is estimated that more than 20 million Sub-Saharan Africans have died from complications of the disease.* Even today, drug cocktails that are relatively accessible in other parts of the globe are still beyond the means of the vast majority of Africans. Writer-director Darrell Roodt's South African drama Yesterday is set in this catastrophic scenario. The film depicts the effects of AIDS in the life of a young Zulu woman who contracts HIV from her husband. Although Roodt's narrative maintains its focus on the plight of one particular individual, the (for non-Zulus) quirkily named Yesterday represents millions of other women,...

A good ghost story is hard to come by today. The various attempts of haunted houses and ghost tales today rely heavily on jump scares and loud sound affects to propel the story along. Thankfully “The Changeling” doesn’t follow the model! I had only heard of this film in passing but never actually made an attempt to watch but now I am glad I did. Here is a film that really disturbed me. It’s called Hungry Hearts and it’s made by the Italian director Saverio Costanzo, who clearly enjoys Roman Polanski’s Apartment Trilogy but has less positive feelings about the difficulties of raising a child. But, as what often makes Polanski’s movies so effective, inspired technique can work horrifying, if (in this case, and Polanski’s) alienating wonders with material that its maker is hostile towards, or at least skeptical of.
Costanzo’s new movie relies heavily on the accumulation of dread. It does not win us over with big surprises, uncertainty, or unruly plot twists. While the aforementioned devices have their place in the horror/thriller genre, Costanzo is exploring the genre from an unique angle, prodding different nerve endings. Many viewers will criticize this film for its over-determined nature, calling its seemingly unnerving events a preordained chain of implausible contrivances.

After enjoying critical acclaim here in Venice with The Solitude of Prime Numbers, Saverio Costanzo returns with the second Italian film in competition. Based on Marco Franzoso’s novel Il bambino indaco, Costanzo has shifted the story from Italy to New York. Alas, it hasn’t travelled well.

Part III: Third Time’s the Charm
When we last left Norman Bates, he was either dead or insane, depending on which Psycho II you’d like to refer to (book or film, respectively). Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance, currently in revival through February 17th at the Berlind Theater at Princeton's McCarter Theater Center, is a beautifully mounted production: superb acting, marvelous direction, and the handsomest of set and costume designs. This is a "chamber drama" in that all the action takes place in one room -- the grand living room of a rich patrician Connecticut family. The cast consists of six players: an extended family of four and their very best friends, a couple who drop in unexpectedly, apparently intent on staying indefinitely.
Mr. Albee's better-known play, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, is a psychological Grand Guignol about an alcohol-soaked combative childless couple. A Delicate Balance expands that comedic horror story motif to include "family life," which is likewise marinated in alcohol. This well-heeled family consists of a middle-aged couple, Tobias (John Glover) and Agnes (Kathleen Chalfant) [both shown above], their thirty-six-year-old thrice-divorced daughter, Julia (Francesca Faridany), and Agnes's alcoholic sister,...

Ivanov Classic Stage Company, NYC
If you are unfamiliar with Anton Chekhov's seldom-produced Russian twist on Hamlet, Classic Stage Company is offering a stunning opportunity to cover that gaping hole with one of their best works in recent years. The play Ivanov is a stellar piece of theater, and this production gives full rein to its high humor and devastating tragedy as it rides a very intense three hours of poetic drama.
2012 has turned out to be an inspired year for plays, and Ivanov will only make it that much more difficult for voters from the Obies & Lortels to pick the appropriate winners, as the cast, design crew, and director from this melancholy celebration of life all present very worthy contenders.
It's Ethan Hawke's face that is on all the ads, and his name that will likely draw many audience members; while this is an ensemble production, Hawke is deserving of the attention.
