Since Elevation Pictures launched in 2013, its logo has become cozily familiar to film lovers across Canada. Just as the Janus Films logo ensures a true art house experience or Blumhouse a plunge into horror, Elevation promises Canadian viewers the best indies from both sides of the border and beyond.
For company co-presidents Laurie May and Noah Segal, that kind of brand identity has been strategic and deliberate. “Quality is king, always has been. It’s good content and a good setup,” Segal says of Elevation’s curated slate of films, each handpicked by his team and designed to compete in theaters and on TV against Hollywood tentpoles and streaming competition.
May and Segal were hardly new to the indie business when Elevation launched. As veterans of earlier players like Lionsgate’s Canadian arm and Alliance Films, the duo knew they had enough hands-on experience — and connections — in distribution to venture out on their own.

The social calendar during the Cannes Film Festival is always a dizzying array of black-tie dinners, informal cocktail parties overlooking the stunning French Riviera and exclusive late-night bashes that often don’t end before daybreak.
On Thursday evening, The Hollywood Reporter entered the mix with a chic early evening gathering presented by Tage Studios to celebrate the publication’s Cannes Issue, a jam-packed weekly magazine that featured special sections dedicated to Legends of the Croisette like Ken Loach, Nanni Moretti, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Nuri Bilge Ceylan; an inaugural list of the top 40 Most Influential Women in International Film; and THR’s Cannes Rising Stars like Charles Melton and Lily Gladstone.
The event took over Salama, a lush hideaway that is positioned at the end of Rue Florian, a stone’s throw from the crush of festival foot traffic. The menu is Moroccan meets Mediterranean flair and the food, vibes and...

The Canadian distributor backed by Teddy Schwarzman’s Black Bear Pictures is expanding operations.
Elevation will partner on the new division with Canadian producer Christina Piovesan, whose credits include The Whistleblower, Amreeka and Red Lights.
The company will offer production services to Canadian and international projects shooting in Canada and move into in-house productions.
“As more producers from around the world have come to recognise the unmatched appeal of Canada as a production destination, and with the growing success of homegrown content as well as international co-productions, a move into production was a natural next step for the company,” said Dan Steinman (pictured), the Elevation Pictures CEO who played an integral role in launching the company in 2013 and also serves as co-president and COO at Black Bear.

The Oscar-winning writer was delivering a talk at Toronto’s Script to Screen Summit.
The time is right for a black James Bond, and Eon producer Barbara Broccoli might be brave enough to hire one, said writer/director Paul Haggis, kicking off Friday’s Script to Screen Summit presented by Winston Baker here at Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 8-18).
Haggis, who wrote the screenplays for Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace, noted he had no connection to Bond anymore but he said “I would go for a black Bond.
“Barbara [Broccoli] is really brave, and so is Michael [G Wilson], I think she might do it. “ He added that Broccoli already proved her bravery “and took a lot of heat” in hiring Daniel Craig as the first blond Bond. “She just didn’t care, she’s very brave, she’s wonderful.”

Multi-year output deal struck between the Nightcrawler producer and UK, Canada distributors.
La-based production company Bold Films has secured multi-year output deals with Icon Film Distribution for the UK/Ireland and Elevation Pictures for Canada.
The two distributors have had previous success with productions from Bold Films, with Icon bringing Ryan Gosling crime drama to UK audiences in 2011 and Elevation taking Jake Gyllenhaal crime thriller Nightcrawler in 2014.
Sierra/Affinity, the sales agent for Bold Films, brokered the output deals as well as the deals for Drive and Nightcrawler.
Last year, Bold Films produced and financed Oscar-nominated Whiplash and recently announced it will finance Jake Gyllenhaal’s Boston marathon bombing movie, Stronger.
Bold’s latest release was international thriller No Escape, starring Owen Wilson, Lake Bell, and Pierce Brosnan.

Something amazing happened over the weekend: Elizabeth Berkley, who once riled us with caffeine melodrama as Jessie Spano on "Saved by the Bell," embraced a critical part of her past. She voiced support for the cult phenomenon of "Showgirls," her wildly over-the-top 1995 bomb that has become arguably the campiest piece of '90s iconography. She gave a wonderful speech to a rapt La audience, who rigorously salted their French fries in approval. But not everybody can be as cool as Berkley. (Looking at you, Faye Dunaway.) Here are ten actors who've embraced the silly, dubious, or campiest movies in their filmography. 1. Jane Fonda, "Barbarella" After "Barbarella," Jane Fonda scored seven Oscar nominations, two wins, and a brand new reputation as one of the more strident celebrities of the '70s. It took her awhile to acknowledge the campy fun in "Barbarella," the swingin' sci-fi sex adventure she made her then-husband Roger Vadim,...

Those of us who already miss House are getting some good news; Hugh Laurie is negotiating to be the main bad guy in the upcoming reboot of 1987's Robocop.
If these talks are successful, Laurie will be playing the cruel CEO overlord of Omnicorp, the very company that made Robocop as well as other heavy security automatons.

Cougar Town Sneak Peeks: The Spooky Laughs of Officer Pumpkinhead
The gang from Cougar Town is a rather insular bunch, you could say. I mean, they hang out with Tom (or tolerate his presence, depending on the occasion), but after that, it takes a lot to be able to crack the Cul-de-sac Crew.
But what they hate more than new people trying to be their friend is new people trying to disrupt their weekend fun. On tonight's episode of Cougar Town, the gang has to take on a gang of teenage boys on bikes taking a shortcut to the mall, thereby raising a ruckus in their otherwise scenic neighborhood. Surprisingly enough, it's not Jules that leads the charge - it's Andy, who tries to rally the troops to save their way of life. Even though the gang can be pretty apathetic, surely they can outsmart a pack of hormonal teenagers,...

"But when you have Charles Layton involved in a deal, anything can happen!" a source tells me about the Alliance chief who's been in the final due diligence stage. The deal has caused quite a lot of consternation up north because it will change the landscape of film distribution there -- and for the worse, not the better. Also a bloodbath is expected: predictions are for the entire Maple staff of 30 to 40 employees to be let go with the exception of the two co-CEOs Laurie May and Brad Pelman, both former Lionsgate execs. Hugh Laurie's inimitable role on House is doubtless a full-time job, and for the better part of the show's six-year run, it has kept him from doing anything major as far as the big screen is concerned.
But after doing voice work for Valiant, Stuart Little 3, and Monster and Aliens, Laurie may just make that precarious jump from small screen glory to headlining in a feature film, with a much buzzed-about May-December-themed dramatic comedy, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Continuing the nightmare he began two years ago, Rob Zombie has returned for another go-around with the Haddonfield slasher, Michael Myers. Toronto -- Lionsgate has named veteran Canadian broadcast executive Phyllis Yaffe to its board of directors, replacing Laurie May, co-president of Canadian movie distributor Maple Pictures.
Vancouver-based Lionsgate in a U.S. securities filing Monday nominated Yaffe, a former CEO of Canadian broadcaster Alliance Atlantis Communications, to a 12-person slate of proposed directors to be voted on at an upcoming shareholders meeting.
The slate of director nominees includes Mark Rachesky, a former Carl Icahn investment strategist with a 19.8% stake in the indie studio, to replace Mark Amin who along with May will not stand for re-election.
Unveiling Lionsgate’s board nominees ahead of an annual shareholders meeting, likely in September, aims in part to help fend off a possible proxy fight by activist shareholder Carl Icahn.
A Lionsgate spokesman said Yaffe will bring the mini-studio new broadcast expertise as it continues its successful diversification into TV production and broadcasting.
