In the 1980s, Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with Rutger Hauer. The actor broke out in a pretty major way following his acclaimed turn in Paul Verhoeven’s Soldier of Orange, paving the way for his American debut in the Sylvester Stallone thriller Nighthawks, where he played the villain Wulfgar. His performance as Roy Batty in Blade Runner blew people away, and for a while, it looked like he might become the next big Hollywood heartthrob, especially when he signed on to star in the epic adventure film Ladyhawke opposite Michelle Pfeiffer for Richard Donner.
But major stardom didn’t happen? Why? Perhaps it was because the movies of Hauer’s that did best at the box office were the ones where he played the villain, such as The Hitcher. He was so unforgettable as a bad guy that when he played a hero, such as in...

Scream Factory has announced that they will be bringing the 1981 slasher The Burning (watch it Here) to 4K Uhd this summer – on July 11th, to be exact – and they’re taking pre-orders at This Link. While supplies last, fans who order the 4K Uhd / Blu-ray set through the Scream Factory website will receive an exclusive 18” X 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The price is $35.99.
The movie is a very cool slasher and I think Scream Factory has chosen an ideal release date for it, as it’s a great one to put on during the summer.
Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis: At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for...

The next slasher classic to get the 4K Ultra HD treatment is The Burning, with Scream Factory announcing today that the 1981 film hits 4K Uhd + Blu-ray on July 11, 2023.
In The Burning, “A group of summer camp pranksters get the scare of their lives when they target the camp’s creepy caretaker…and he takes bloody revenge!”
Feeling like a lost Friday the 13th movie, The Burning introduced the slasher icon known as Cropsy. The film is notable for featuring gore effects from the legendary Tom Savini.
Meagan Navarro wrote here on Bloody Disgusting a while back, “The Burning delivers in a satisfying way thanks to Tom Savini’s uncanny talent for gore.”
The film is also notable for featuring early appearances from actors Fisher Stevens, Holly Hunter, and Jason Alexander, who all became big stars in their own right.
Bonus Features include:

1981 was a huge year for slasher movies. Not only did we get Friday the 13th Part 2 and Halloween II that year, but we also got a ton of others like My Bloody Valentine, The Prowler, Madman, Just Before Dawn, The Funhouse, Night School, Hell Night, Happy Birthday to Me, Bloody Birthday, Graduation Day, the list goes on… and includes The Burning (watch it Here), the movie we’re looking back at with the latest episode in our video series The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Check it out in the embed above!

If there's one immediate connection one can establish between the Italian giallo and the traditional American slasher, it's that both have been on the end of pointedly barbed criticism. Popularity, of course, has never been an issue, but cultural gatekeepers have had their knives out for the slasher from day one, while the giallo has often been decried as nothing but violent misogynism told through incoherent plots. Even the original Mondadori novels from which the genre takes its name were denounced by Mussolini's fascist government—you couldn't ask for a better recommendation. But the other connection? Music.
In contemporary times and the advent of the DVD and more advanced Blu-ray, audiences have had access to the giallo like never before, meaning they can not only see these pictures almost for the first time, but also hear them, both of which have contributed to a reassessment of the giallo as art.

In the year 2008, the cops are better armed than before, but nothing has prepared them for this. Swift, sharp-clawed and deadly, something moves among them on the streets, in the alleyways, on the rooftops, tearing out human hearts and devouring them. Maverick cop “Harley” Stone (Rutger Hauer) lost his partner to the beast, and now it looks like his girlfriend Michelle (Kim Cattrall) is next on the killer’s list. Even in the future, there aren’t guns big enough to stop the creature’s deadly force, but Stone has no choice. The closest you’ll get to an R-rated Venom movie this month.
Dick Durkin: I don't think this thing thinks it's Satan, I think this thing Is Satan.
Stone: Well Satan is in deep s***!
Venom is one of the most recognizable comic-book villains of all time, but its fair to say he hasn't had a smooth ride on the big screen. Sam Raimi's noted distaste for the character didn't bode well when the studio insisted he include Venom as an antagonist in Spider-Man 3. While using the symbiote as a means to explore Peter Parker's dark side was intriguing, Topher Grace's take on Venom proved majorly disappointing to many. Raimi has since admitted he just didn't get the appeal of the character, and a planned solo movie was scrapped.
Channing Tatum was rumored to be interested in taking on a Venom movie during The Amazing Spider-Man era,...

When an ill-advised prank misfires, summer camp caretaker Cropsy is committed to hospital with hideous burns. 35 years ago, Tony Maylam’s not-so-classic slasher film The Burning was unleashed upon the world. Released exactly one year after Sean S. Cunningham’s blockbuster Friday the 13th and just one week after Friday the 13th Part 2, The Burning took in a measly $707,770 at the box office (and that includes the box office returns for the re-release in November of 1982). The Slasher boom that caught fire in the late 70’s in North America pulled a lot of ‘inspiration’ in their kills from the Italian Gialli that had gone before ( I’m looking at you, Friday The 13th Part 2), but oddly none adopted the feel or the look from their stylish brethren. That is, until The Burning (1981), a summer camp slaughterhouse produced by a fledgling little company called Miramax. A uniquely nasty little number, The Burning stands apart from many of its campkill cousins with elevated performances, strong direction, and a mood that evokes the best of Argento.
Bob and Harvey Weinstein started Miramax as a way to get into the movie business, coming from a background in music promotion. All signs pointed towards horror as the entry point – you didn’t need stars, and limited locations keep costs down. The Burning was budgeted at 1.5 million, and only brought in half...

“They never found his body, but they say his spirit lives in the forest. This forest. A maniac, a thing no longer human. They say he lives on whatever he can catch. Eats them raw, alive maybe. And every year he picks on a summer camp and seeks his revenge for the terrible things those kids did to him. Every year he kills. Right now he’s out there. Watching. Waiting. So don’t look; he’ll see you. Don’t breathe; he’ll hear you. Don’t move; you’re dead!”

Following the announcement that came earlier this week, launching yet another hugely impressive line-up at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the respective line-up has now been announced for what is in some ways its European counterpart, the 2013 Venice Film Festival.
The announcement shows that the two will continue to have a number of films overlapping, including Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (the Opening Night Film in Venice), Peter Landesman’s Parkland, Stephen Frears’ Philomena, and more. But it also brings with its news of where a number of films will be making their debut, including Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem; the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki, The Wind Rises; James Franco’s Child of God; Lee Sang-il’s Yurusarezaru Mono, the Japanese remake of Unforgiven; and Steven Knight’s Locke, led by Tom Hardy, and shot in one take.

Chicago – At its core, “The Burning” is quite clearly an attempt to cash in on the already-waning slasher trend inspired by “Friday the 13th” but it’s a much better film than most of the creatively barren genre. It joins “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” as the latest entries in the increasingly spectacular Scream Factory line of Blu-rays. Both are worth a look.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Burning” plays off the “Cropsey” legend (so brilliantly detailed in the documentary of the same name) of a burned figure in the woods coming back to enact revenge on the kids stupid enough to linger in them. It’s essentially a standard slasher flick (lots of P.O.V. with creepy music, T&A, future stars like Jason Alexander and Fisher Stevens) but there’s a darker tone here, punctuated by the intense violence and makeup effects from the great Tom Savini. It’s before...

In honor of Shout/Scream Factory's new blu-ray special edition of The Burning, I pulled out the review I wrote several years back when MGM (to their sincere credit) released a long-awaited "uncut" version of the cult favorite slasher flick. Let's scan through that to see if I knew what I was talking about...
At first glance, Tony Maylam's The Burning looks like just another Friday the 13th knock-off. At second and third glance, too, actually. That's probably because this 1981 hack-'em-up really Is nothing more than just another Friday the 13th knock-off. (new note: apparently / allegedly The Burning was shot before Friday the 13th, but released after. So maybe I'm dead wrong about that "ripoff" stuff.) But that's not to say it doesn't have its meager charms. First off, it was one of the earliest of the copycats (new note: ahem) to hit the scene, plus it came packing...

Freddy Krueger is king of the singed maniacs, but before he came around, there was Cropsy. 1981′s The Burning gives birth to the lesser known charred killer as a direct answer to the popularity of Friday the 13th. Bob and Harvey Weinstein jumped into the slasher game with this film, and the cult following around the movie has grown ever since. Bolstered by a surprisingly recognizable cast and some great make up effects by Tom Savini, the film is a slasher fan’s dream come true.
The story is fairly straight forward as with most films of this type. A group of teens decide to play a prank on the camp’s maintenance man, named Cropsy, and they accidentally set him on fire and leave him for dead. Several years later, at another summer camp, with the legend of Cropsy firmly in place in local lore, people start dying. Is the story of Cropsy true?...

I believe I've found what must be the seminal summer camp slasher film of the 1980s. It captures every element of the decade's obsession with movies like Friday the 13th and Meatballs and puts them in one package. Shout! Factory has scored again with their Blu-ray release of The Burning.
The caretaker of a summer camp is burned alive and left deformed after a prank goes wrong. Years later, he's released from the hospital and returns to the area where the accident occurred. A new group of campers have arrived for the summer and he has horrific plans for them. Hedge clippers in hand, the caretaker begins his reign of terror on the counselors and attendees.
The Burning has the raunchy toilet humor of Meatballs mixed with everything you came to expect from slasher films like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp. You have nice girls making bad decisions by hooking up with bad guys.

Since we're officially hitting summer this week I figured it was a good time to talk about the long lost summer camp slasher genre and ask you all to share some of your favourites. I'll start the ball rolling with what I consider the the granddaddy of the lot, The Burning.
Hardcore horror fans probably don't need a lesson here, but if you've never heard of The Burning you may be surprised to learn about the pedigree behind the mostly unknown 80s project. I was created and produced by the now legendary Harvey Weinstein and the film helped launched the juggernaut that would becomes Mirimax studios. Not only that, but it was co-written with the help of soon-to-be Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, Brad Grey. And that was just before the film even started lensing.

On the surface, director Tony Maylam’s seriously misunderstood 1992 sci-fi actioner “Split Second” appears to be an impossibly uninspired “Alien” knock-off that borrows heavily from Stephen Hopkins’ silly sequel to John McTiernan’s immortal classic “Predator”. Dig a little deeper, however, and you’ll discover one surprisingly rewarding monster flick that never once takes itself too seriously, choosing instead to power its familiar premise with a bevy of dry humor and sly sight gags. Cult favorite Rutger Hauer spreads his patented brand of cinematic cheese around with an unprecedented thickness; there’s nary a moment when he’s not smoking cigars, drinking coffee, running stylishly through large puddles of water, or doing something to distract you from the fact that you’ve seen this type of picture a thousand times before. Sadly, “Split Second” fizzles out during what should have been a deeply satisfying climatic showdown between our hero and the film’s uber-mysterious creature,...

Can you say Friday The 13th rip-off? Good, your understanding of the English language is at least sufficient (that‘s my pretend pretentiousness emerging). Now move on from that notion, because while The Burning was clearly inspired by Friday, it’s got some fantastic elements that enable the picture to stand firm on it’s own accord. First off, the “rules” of a slasher are treated with great liberty here. Neither writer Harvey Weinstein nor writer/director Tony Maylam restrict their script maneuvers by insisting upon following the beaten path. Second, the cast is absolutely terrific, showcasing an array of actors and actresses who would go on to build highly successful careers. Third, Tom Savini is on board for the special effects… need I say more on that topic? Add it all up and the result is a kick ass slasher film that could very easily be considered superior to Friday The 13th,...

While the title seems to have nothing to do with the storyline, it augurs the film's likely duration at the boxoffice.
Admittedly, it's hard to knock a film that includes Michael J. Pollard as a rat catcher, but this convoluted eco-actioner is so numbingly formulaic and mindlessly violent that even the usual forbidding presence of Rutger Hauer in the lead role can't rescue it.
Set in London, 2008, when the ozone layer has eroded to such an extent that all of Europe is plagued by apocalyptic weather patterns, "Split Second'' begins impressively. Torrential rains have waterlogged the city, engulfing the subways, overrunning the streets. Vicious water rats terrorize the citizenry and, in this scummy maelstrom, a darker form of evil rises up from the sloughs. A serial killer, with the strength of a beast, is ripping the hearts out of the good people of London town.
The police force is overwhelmed, out of its depth. Only a wacko cop named Harley Stone (Hauer), suspended for violence, drinking and every imaginable professional transgression, seems to have a bead on the killer. The bright bobbies have no choice. They reinstate Harley and hope he doesn't run amok again.
To keep him somewhat on target, they assign him a partner, Dick Durkin (Neil Duncan), who's some sort of high-and-dry psychoanalyst specializing in serial killers. Not surprisingly, Harley doesn't take to Dick, rarely acknowledging him except when loudly barking out his first name, Dick. Such is the blend of dialogue and humor.
While screenwriter Gary Scott Thompson has imaginatively wound a torrent of subtext into this narrative, including hunks of astrology and parapsychology, the narrative continually misconnects, ultimately shorting out in one noisy, charged climax.
On the plus side, the film's visual components under director Tony Maylam's kinetic hand are impressively realized. Cinematographer Clive Tickner's vivid etching of this dark, washed-out future world is powerful. Similarly, Chris Edwards' harsh, minimalist production design is appropriately unnerving.
In addition, a cup of tea and a warm fire to rat and pigeon wrangler David Corke who, obviously, had his hands full on this one.
