Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

Once upon a time, Netflix was in the business of auteur-driven animation, allowing filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro work on his dream project "Pinocchio," giving Henry Selick his first movie in 13 years after Disney killed his previous project, letting Charlie Kaufman deliver an existential kids' animated movie in "Orion and the Dark," and rescuing "Nimona" after Disney pulled the plug. The streamer has partnered with the likes of Glen Keane, Sergio Pablos, Richard Linklater, Chris Williams, Craig McCracken, and Jorge R. Gutiérrez, but a name that won't join this list anytime soon is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.
Speaking with Deadline, Lynch offered an update on his long-gestating animated movie "Snootworld," which he's been teasing since at least 2009. Lynch co-wrote the script for his animated feature debut with Caroline Thompson ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"), with Lynch penning the second of the film's three acts.

Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup zoomed onto TV screens 25 years ago, as Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls debuted on November 18, 1998. Created by Craig McCracken, the animated series told how one professor’s quest to concoct the “perfect little girl” went awry with the accidental addition of Chemical X, turning three kindergarten-aged girls into super-powered crimefighters. These days, the Powerpuff Girls live on only in reruns and streaming libraries — a recent live-action adaptation never made it past the pilot stage, unfortunately. But with new comic books and even a new TV show in the pipeline, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup will be back with new stories faster than you can say “Fuzzy Lumpkins.” Here’s a breakdown of the franchise so far… The original series In Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls — which aired six seasons between 1998 and 2005 — Tara Strong, E.G. The CW can never hold Kitty! How’s that for a deep cut? Don’t worry, Powerpuff Girl fans. I’ve got your back. Some unfortunate news is coming out of Townsville today. The CW is no longer developing several live-action series, including The Powerpuff Girls, the Archie series Jake Chang, the Arrowverse show Justice U, and a female-led Zorro. The same fate goes for all series left over from former CW president Mark Pedowitz’s tenure.
“We’ve already given those back to the studios,” Brad Schwartz, The CW’s President of Entertainment, explained to TVLine after an Upfront presentation, adding, “so they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere.”

When Pete Docter thinks back to his early days at Pixar, working on 1995’s groundbreaking Toy Story, he thinks of his time studying animation at CalArts. “[It was] just a bunch of people drawing, trying to do something cool,” he says. Now a three-time Oscar winner and Pixar’s chief creative officer, Docter — along with Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken and the late Evelyn Lambart from the National Film Board of Canada — will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career contributions to animation during the 50th Annie Awards.
While speaking about his career to THR ahead of the gala event at UCLA’s Royce Hall, Docter fondly remembers meeting a trio of his own animation idols — Disney legends Joe Grant (Dumbo) and Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston (two of Disney Animation’s Nine Old Men) — and the valuable lessons he learned. “Ollie would say, ‘Don’t draw what the character is doing; draw what they’re thinking,...

Pete Docter is no stranger to awards ceremonies.
He’s the only filmmaker to have won the Best Animated Feature Oscar three times (most recently for the 2020 film “Soul”) and Docter’s “Up” was only the second animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Add to that a half-dozen Annie Awards and a BAFTA trophy.
This year, Docter will be honored with the Winsor McKay Award at this year’s Annies, presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, Asifa-Hollywood. Previous Winsor McKay honorees, named for the legendary animator behind Gertie the Dinosaur, include Eyvind Earle, Hayao Miyazaki, Ray Harryahusen, Tim Burton and Don Bluth. Most cartoon fans should be able to find something to enjoy in the 2022 edition of “The Animation Show of Shows,” a 90-minute survey of recent animated short movies. Unfortunately, the juxtaposition of certain shorts also sometimes detracts from their standout qualities.
Most of the ten included short films are technically accomplished and formally adventurous enough to warrant viewers’ attention. Some shorts, like the stick figure coming-of-age drama “Aurora,” also look corny or trite when compared with others. The piecemeal nature of this sort of omnibus also does a particular disservice to experimental or non-narrative shorts, like the playful and impossible-to-synopsize hand-drawn short “Zoizoglyphe.”
The first hour of this year’s “Animation Show of Shows” focuses on new shorts from the past two-plus years, since the series was put on hiatus during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The last half hour of this program highlights a newly restored short from 1987: “The Man Who Planted Trees,...

Craig McCracken’s “Kid Cosmic” is one of the best animated shows of the past few years, bursting with heart and imagination. And while it debuted on Netflix almost exactly a year ago, it has already cycled through three seasons and 24 half-hour episodes. And while it is sad to see the show go, it ends in a way that is both emotionally satisfying and extremely entertaining (we are forbidden from discussing details).
With the third and final season now streaming on Netflix, TheWrap spoke with series creator Craig McCracken about where the show came from and ending “Kid Cosmic” and concluding the series its own terms.
Secret Origins
The idea for “Kid Cosmic” struck McCracken back in 2009. “It really was just this odd kid that lived in this desert community and drove people, local truckers and staff, in this truck stop crazy. And he had found this object that he assumed was from space,...

The CW’s Powerpuff live-action pilot has lost one of its crimefighters as star Chloe Bennet exits from the project, Deadline has confirmed.
The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum was set to star as Blossom, opposite Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault who will appear as Bubbles and Buttercup, respectively. Sources say that the actress did not sign a new deal to stay on the project due to scheduling issues. Cameron and Perrault will stay on as the remaining Powerpuff Girls but the search for a new Blossom will begin in the coming months.
Her exit from the reboot comes about three months after The CW’s Mark Pedowitz explained that the live-action pilot will be reworked.

Animation luminary Fred Seibert’s FredFilms will team up with Chinese content production firm DeZerlin Entertainment for an incubator projected called “Hot Pot! Cartoons,” which hopes to bring emerging Chinese talent and content out to the global market.
In the project, FredFilms’ U.S.-based development and production team and Qingdao-headquartered DeZerlin will supervise up-and-coming Chinese creators to develop animated shorts for global distribution.
“Often what’s happening with Western animation producers is we’re looking to get a toehold into the China market because it’s so large. And that’s fine, but it always makes me go, ‘Ok, well, what’s going on there that we can bring here, rather than vice versa,’” Seibert told Variety.
The serial entrepreneur has been taking an incubator approach to animation for almost 30 years, focusing on cultivating seven-or-so-minute shorts that can then go on to spin off into major series. As president of Hanna-Barbera in the 1990s,...

The CW’s pilot of “Powerpuff,” the live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network animated show “The Powerpuff Girls,” is being overhauled and re-shot because the initial pilot was “too campy” and not as rooted in reality as network execs would have liked. The CW also offered an update on the fate of “The 100” prequel on a press briefing Tuesday on the network’s fall schedule
“The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss,” said The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz about “Powerpuff.” “We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros. TV] studios.”
“In this case the pilot didn’t work,” he said. “But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why...

While some new titles are set to premiere on The CW as part of its 2021-2022 fall slate, the anticipated Powerpuff live-action reboot did not make the cut and will be reworked and repiloted. The CW’s Mark Pedowitz expanded on the decision, noting that holding the series back will provide an opportunity to do right by it.
“The reason we do pilots is sometimes things miss, this was just a miss,” he said during The CW’s upfront press call on Tuesday. “We believe in the cast completely, we believe in Diablo and Heather, the writers… in this case, the pilot didn’t work.”

The CW’s live-action adaptation of “The Powerpuff Girls” was one of the most anticipated pilots this year, with Diablo Cody co-writing and Greg Berlanti on board as executive producer. But the network announced Monday that the project was being sent back to the drawing board for retooling.
