Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

Other notable releases for April 18th include Scream Factory’s stellar collector’s edition of Tales From the Hood, Contamination .7, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Mephisto Waltz from Kino Lorber.

To celebrate the brand new 4K restoration of Donnie Darko – out 9th Jan. 2017 on DVD & Blu-ray – we are giving away a DVD of the Theatrical Cut courtesy of Arrow Video.
Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science-fiction, Spielberg-ian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template – and the high-water mark – with his debut feature.

Dick”, Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast – pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katherine Ross, and television favourite Noah Wyle – and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran.
This brand-new 4K restoration, supervised by Richard Kelly, allows a modern classic to finally receive the home video treatment it deserves.

Jake Gyllenhaal starred as a teenager dealing with bizarre visions of a menacing figure in a rabbit mask named Frank in writer-director Richard Kelly’s 2001 film “Donnie Darko.” It’s been 15 years since the film opened in theaters and is now considered a cult classic. With the help of IMDb’s trivia section for the film, TheWrap has amassed six fun facts about the movie: Aside from the gruesome figure in a rabbit costume that haunts Donnie, there are other rabbits in the movie: The Echo and the Bunnymen song “The Killing Moon” is featured in one scene as a Volkswagen.

Thirty years have passed since the release of "Pretty in Pink" (on February 28, 1986), and yet we're still bewildered by the teen romance's climax.
Maybe we need to think of the John Hughes-scripted film as Gen X's own "Casablanca." The ending makes more sense if you think of Duckie (Jon Cryer) as Humphrey Bogart, letting the woman he loves (Molly Ringwald's Andie) go off with the dull-but-decent guy (Andrew McCarthy's Blane) because he's finally admitted to himself that he's a chivalrous romantic who values her happiness above his own. Yeah, it's a stretch, but it's just one of many interpretations to spin out of this Hughes classic.
In honor of the film turning the big three-0, here are 15 surprising facts about the best movie ever named after a Psychedelic Furs song.

Pretty in Pink isn't just a good '80s movie. It isn't just a good teen movie. And it isn't just a good romantic movie. It's just a good movie, period. The John Hughes classic first hit theaters on Feb. 28, 1986, and it turns 30 years old this weekend. The film featured Molly Ringwald as Andie, a high school student whose style belies her working class roots. She's captured the eye of seemingly every guy in school - among them, preppy dreamboat Blane (Andrew McCarthy) and her little hipster buddy, Duckie (Jon Cryer). And the process of Ringwald's character trying to figure...

It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

Quite often, TV soundtracks are only mentioned when they're particularly bad. A clunking tune or wobbly composition can turn a beautiful, tense or dramatic TV moment and stink out the whole scene.
But what about the great soundtracks? The ones that make a good moment great. The tunes that give TV shows swagger. Digital Spy has picked out the 10 TV show soundtracks from 2013 that have rocked, helped us get our groove on or made us cry.
1. Peaky Blinders
The Brummie gangster drama, which ended this week, was beautifully shot, brilliantly acted and deliciously dark. The cherry on the top of the flat caps was the soundtrack. Tom Waits, the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and a hefty topping of the brilliant Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
2. Broadchurch

The Manic Street Preachers have so far spent twenty one years creating brilliant and important records. Unlike most bands that break into their third decade they have flourished rather than becoming stale. This time around the Manics have taken a breath and ‘Rewind The Film’ is a record that for a moment pauses and looks back nostalgically on youth in small welsh towns and the happiness and contentment that could be gleaned from simpler times. The anger of youth is still burning in everything the Manics produce but this time it is seen from a new perspective. Getting old is lamented but the blunt and defiant lyrics remain.
Clearly the brilliance of Ian McCulloch’s appearance on ‘Some Kind of Nothingness’ encouraged the band to feature more guest vocalists and this time around there are three who each have been expertly paired with their tracks. ‘This...

The music we grow up with shapes our tastes in later life, according to a study by Cornell University. We asked Guardian writers to tell us about the songs that take them back to their childhood homes
'My mother would listen to the Carpenters while ironing'
Of the handful of albums my parents owned, it was The Carpenters' Singles 1969-1973 that struck me the most. I remember being particularly fascinated by Rainy Days and Mondays. With the benefit of hindsight, I suspect it was because it was the first piece of music I had ever heard that appeared to perfectly suit the circumstances in which I heard it. My mother would listen to the Carpenters in the afternoon, while doing the ironing in the front room, and I remember thinking that was what the woman in the song was probably doing too. In my head she was singing it...

Concluding the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, Edgar Wright’s The World’s End is naturally one of our most anticipated films of the year. We’ve had Shaun of the Dead, we’ve had Hot Fuzz, and now we can’t wait to see how The World’s End brings to a close the three films (linked thematically, rather than through characters, of course).
Yesterday brought with it two brilliant new images from the film, following on from the first official image that we saw just before Christmas. And now IGN has debuted a new image, after getting a chance to sit down with Wright and talk about the film.

I have to confess that, after last week's trauma (no, I'm not talking about President Obama's debate performance), I hoped that we'd all get a break from the gut wrenching emotional stuff. Like maybe this week, everyone will solve a mystery on how to plant community gardens or take up the super heroic act of dog walking for the elderly.
Just a nice, cozy episode where no one dies, no one cries and only pleasant things happen to our coterie of young juvenile delinquents.
Fat chance.
We open this week to find an attractive young woman jogging near the community center. I immediately guess that this scenario will end in her screaming in terror… and it does, sort of. You see, she goes to the center to get cleaned up after her run.
Only, in the locker room, she finds something that will chill her blood and stir in...

Art rock has a long and storied history perpetuated by bands like Jethro Tull, King Crimson and the Velvet Underground. And then, of course, there are so many performers who have become artists as well, ranging from Brian Eno to Bon Jovi’s Tico Torres, with too many modern acts to name. Now, one more talented musician can be added to this list of cross-media artists, as Echo and the Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant opens his first major American gallery exhibition tomorrow....

Giants? Patriots? Eli Manning and Tom Brady? Yeah, they're on our TVs Sunday, but for a sizable portion of the audience watching Super Bowl Xlvi, the commercials are just as big a draw as the game.
Advertisers ponied up as much as $3.5 million per 30-second spot on NBC's broadcast of the game, which will likely draw about 100 million viewers. Did they get their money's worth? Check back throughout the game for Zap2it's running commentary on the best ads of Super Bowl Sunday.
Hyundai: Gonna Fly Now!
This probably shouldn't be as cute as it was, a bunch of Hyundai employees singing "Gonna Fly Now" from the "Rocky" movies. But it was pretty adorable - the bald guy taking the super-high part particularly cracked us up.

What is…football? Is it that thing where polar bears try to maul each other to death while figure skating, all for the sake of a bottle of Coca-Cola even though we all know by this point that polar bears subsist Only on Coke and have a seemingly endless supply? Sports are amazing.
Anyway, you know I just tune in for the commercials. I’ve seen a bunch of them, but obviously I’m not as sensitive as EW’s morality maven Adam B. Vary, who thinks that seeing Super Bowl ads before the Super Bowl is wrong and possibly also un-American.

Hey Toronto! The Twitch-presented tour of 1980's teen films continues tonight at the Tiff Bell Lightbox with a screening of the John Hughes written and produced Pretty In Pink. One of the best of the Hughes bunch (though he handed directing duties to his go-to substitute Howard Deutch), Pretty in Pink stars Molly Ringwald as Andie, a blue-collar girl with a unique fashion sense who falls hard for upper-class, feathery-haired, linen blazer-wearing heartthrob Blane (Andrew McCarthy), much to the dismay of her childhood friend Duckie (Jon Cryer), who has been in love with her for years. Featuring a fantastic soundtrack--including the title track by the Psychedelic Furs and songs by Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths and New Order--and great supporting turns by Harry Dean...

What's your favorite scary movie?
No, we're not trying to reenact the gory opening of "Scream" -- in preparation for Halloween, the Zap2it team is compiling a list of the scariest, funniest, weirdest horror films we hold near and dear. Did all that head-spinning in "The Exorcist" freak you out as a child? What about Jack Nicholson's terrifying turn in "The Shining"? Or perhaps you prefer the kitschy fun of a retro B-movie?
Either way, you'll want to check out Zap2it's list of our favorite scary movies, then leave your own suggestions in the comments. Together, we'll create the perfect Halloweekend movie marathon playlist!
"Halloween"This movie has acquired a bad rap over the years because of the innumerable sequels and the ill-advised 2007 remake (which was itself followed by a sequel). But go back and watch John Carpenter's 1978 original. It gets gory as all hell before things come to a climax,...

Ian McCulloch has admitted that he would love to collaborate with David Bowie. The Echo and the Bunnymen frontman performed last night at a Jd Set concert in Glasgow celebrating Bowie, alongside Sharleen Spiteri, Steve Mason, Kate Nash and Ramona. McCulloch told Digital Spy: "I'd love to do one last great David Bowie song. I'd love me and him to do something. I've got songs that I'd love him to sing - it was him and Leonard Cohen. "I just think Bowie was so influential and the greatest solo artist of the 20th Century. In any walk of art. It seems like he's waiting [to release new music]. Maybe his life's just changed." Bowie's last studio album was 2003's Reality. The singer-songwriter was diagnosed with an acutely blocked artery while on tour (more)...

In the wake of 80's week, I found myself contemplating the state of the modern teen comedy. After the end of John Hughes' stellar track record of teen-themed films, we haven't had much to take their place. Sure, we had Can't Hardly Wait and American Pie, Clueless and Ten Things I Hate About You, but it feels like the genre is still strangely empty. And then I remembered 2004's The Girl Next Door. It's not your conventional high school movie -- it's filled with gratuitous nudity, copious swearing, drug use, and all kinds of other fun stuff. It's one of those films that I feel oddly guilty about liking... no. Fuck that. I love this flick. I can't help myself.
The Girl Next Door is a simple boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl story, with a couple of twists thrown in. Taking place during the final days of high school, Matthew (Emile Hirsch...

I have an old habit of keeping a eye out for keywords that reference The Velvet Underground when filtering through the colossal amount of new band releases. It's useful in finding music that I'll not only have an interest in, but can be assured the band in question has good taste.
San Diego's Lights On set off two flags; the obvious being the "U" word in the title of this song/video they just released. As you'll see, that has more to do with a kind of cold war bunker mentality than it has to do with Lou Reed. But, the second, and maybe less obvious, is the title of their debut record, "Here Comes The Ocean" -- which any self-respecting Vu aficionado would know is a line repeated in the Vu's song, "Ocean."
Now that we've established that, Lights On don't sound much like the Vu at all, but...

As Twilight Eclipse prepares to swoop into cinemas, we look back at Joel Schumacher’s 80s vampire classic, The Lost Boys...
With the latest instalment of the Twilight Saga just around the corner, it’s time to remind ourselves of a classic vampire film that influenced many to come after. For me, the greatest alternative to Eclipse this summer is The Lost Boys.
Set in the fictional town of Santa Carla, the story follows two brothers who have recently moved to the sleepy seaside locale. Unbeknownst to them, however, it’s inundated with vampires. When the eldest brother Michael is attracted to a mysterious girl, she leads him to a group of vampires that want him to join them. When Michael starts showing signs of turning into a vampire, it is down to his younger brother Sam to figure out who the head vampire is in order to save him.

After a slow start owing to traffic backups and a massive tangle at a two-fold ticket and security check-in for tens of thousands, southern California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was in full swing by late afternoon Friday and back to its happiest-musical-place on-Earth status Saturday.According to officials, 75,000 or more attended daily, and that's not counting the many thousands working the event, as well as performers, their crews, entourages and guests. At times, it felt like perhaps too many in the venue; navigation was not easy, making it more difficult than during past years to catch a little of this and that.Several acts, including Bad Lieutenant, the Cribs and Frightened Rabbit, were grounded in Europe by the volcanic ash from Iceland.Friday's headliner, Jay-z, turned in a commanding performance backed by a 10-member band that included a drummer and percussionist, a cut-loose guitarist and a brace of horns.

The Hot Tub Time Machine soundtrack. That mere title alone is so communicative of both the tone and ambition of this new John Cusack-toplined comedy that the simple sight of those four little words is all you need in order to make the call as to whether you want to see the movie or whether you think it likely to be as seismic a catastrophe for modern cinema as Michael Haneke slipping while getting out of the shower and fatally cracking his skull on the Palme d’Or he keeps on the shelf behind the toilet. Essentially it would appear that Steve Pink’s film is the episode of Family Guy where Peter and Brian journey back to the ‘80s and piss off the chicken while simultaneously inventing Rick Astley, only elongated to feature length and with Chevy Chase’s hot tub repairman supplanting the Grim Reaper as gatekeeper...

Former Beverly Hills 90210 star Shannen Doherty made her Dancing With The Stars debut last night. She performed a Viennese Waltz with her professional partner Mark Ballas and dedicated it to her beloved dad.
Dancing to Echo and the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon,” we felt like Shannen was almost going through the motions during her routine. She did the moves but there was no emotion of oomph behind them. Also she really needs to concentrate on her poor posture but we think she’ll improve….it is week one after all.
Judges Comments:
Bruno Tonioli: “That was a difficult piece of choreography for show one. It’s hard to get it right for week one. I think for me it was a little too difficult. It didn’t flow. You were swinging your arms round like a primate. It’s very difficult but you did it and you will...

We run down a few of the reasons why the late writer/producer/director inspired a touching Oscars tribute.
By Susannah Gora
John Hughes
Photo: Paul Natkin/WireImage
At Sunday's Oscars, the late writer/producer/director John Hughes received a rare special tribute — something that his fans agree was a richly deserved validation of his work. Although Hughes made great movies about adults ("Planes, Trains and Automobiles") and children ("Home Alone"), he will be forever associated with teenagers — and for good reason. The movies he made in the 1980s about teens, including "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Some Kind of Wonderful," did nothing less than revolutionize the youth film genre.
These films permanently changed how Hollywood makes and markets teen movies, but more than that, they made a great sociological impact, changing the way many young people think about everything from love and friendship to sex,...

It's almost time to bid adieu a show that people didn't give a chance and when they actually did put aside the snide comments, paid attention and listened… it was too late.
Dollhouse will have its final curtain call tonight and like any other Joss Whedon apocalyptic production, expectations are high. The stakes are high and the bets are in: will Dollhouse go out in a bang and prove to the naysayers that they were wrong, even going as far as listing reasons why it should be cancelled? Or will it prove the naysayers right in their assumption of it being a bad experiment?
Well, in my eyes, Dollhouse was never a failed experiment. It was a look in the darkest aspects of humanity without demons or monsters serving as avatars for problems that manifest the human soul. It dared you to look at the world for what it was and where we are headed,...

The week was only four days long, but it ended up being one of the busiest weeks in the history of the MTV Newsroom blog. Another year, another desert blowout. And this one's actually for the kids. After leaning heavily on some relative geezers for the last few go-rounds, organizers of the 2010 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival are going back to the future, tapping a host of modern acts for an eclectic slate that includes Jay-z, Muse, Thom Yorke, Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem and a reunited Pavement, and still manages a few blasts from the past, Sly and the Family Stone, Devo and Echo and the Bunnymen among them. The biggest musical gathering west of the Mississippi, Coachella is set to take place April 16-18 at its usual haunt, the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif. But with the inclusion in the...

The 2010 festival season is officially underway, as the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (which will be held in the usual place in Indio, California on April 16, 17 and 18) now has an official lineup. Jay-z, Muse, Pavement, Gorillaz, Faith No More and Vampire Weekend lead the way at the top of the pile, but there are also plenty of up-and-comers who will be worth spending time with in the desert heat (you should already schedule time to see Beach House play their new songs on Saturday).
Since no lineup is perfect, let's take a look at the five bands we're most looking forward to, along with the five bands that make us go "Huh?"
The Best
Them Crooked Vultures: They're perhaps the best live band working right now, and Josh Homme songs always sound better when you're a little bit dehydrated.

Coachella has always been seen as the least traditional of the big U.S. music festivals, and in 2010, they're definitely staying with that sentiment. On Tuesday (January 19), organizers revealed the lineup for this year's Coachella fest — set for April 15-18 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California — and the bill is topped by three acts you wouldn't necessarily see headlining fests here in the states (except when the Beastie Boys drop out at the last minute): Jay-z, Muse and Gorillaz.

Joining them are the usual assortment of 'Chella acts, including the prerequisite reunited acts (Pavement, Faith No More), the icons (Thom Yorke, Devo, Sly and the Family Stone), the indie stalwarts (Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Spoon, Mgmt), the hotly tipped buzz acts (Yeasayer,...

Editors’ detractors have rightfully pointed out that the English quartet’s output is an amalgamation of other bands’ sounds, with games of spot-the-influence turning up such post-punk heavyweights as Joy Division, Echo And The Bunnymen, and The Cure. (Revisionist historians have put it more simply, calling Editors an Interpol rip-off.) But dissing a band simply because it borrows—albeit heavily—from the past means ignoring how pop culture got to where it is today, and in the case of Editors’ debut album, The Back Room, that criticism overlooked the fact that the group lived up to its aspirations by writing ...

Whoa.
Let me catch my breath for a second and try to explain the plethora of emotions, theories, and questions that are circulating through my body like an It system on its way to crashing from information overload. "The Hollow Men" was great, but it wasn't "Getting Closer" nor was it "Epitaph One". I blame this on the release of the episode title for the series finale of Dollhouse being released early, which is "Epitaph Two: The Return". Knowing that title ruined some of the shock and awe of tonight's episode, "The Hollow Men", because we knew that it wasn't going to end well despite the efforts of Echo and the Bunnymen. We did get some shocking deaths and some 'reasoning' behind the madness that was Boyd, but in the end, I couldn't help but to constantly anticipate the inevitable, which was the Apocalypse, or as Topher calls it: the Thought-calypse.

Geoff Johns opened up with some episode titles and director info for his two-part "Smallville" story that's coming up, and Tom Welling will direct the second part, titled "Legends," according to those tweets. Johns said he has the utmost confidence that Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl will be treated with respect.
Todd Nauck, meanwhile, showed some tweet respect to Johns, dedicating a Slurpee pic to him. You can find that, along with Chip Zdarsky's Astro Boy artwork, Edgar Wright's evaluation of "The Vampire's Assistant" and Mark Waid's post from Singapore.
They're all waiting after the jump in the Friday Twitter Report for October 23, 2009.

Early Friday (October 9) morning, Nasa fired the latest salvo in its ongoing war with the Mooninites, smashing a rocket into a lunar crater just because they felt like it.
Ok, that's not necessarily true. The stated purpose of Nasa's mission was to discover water ice buried beneath the surface of the moon, but we here in the MTV Newsroom would like to think that Nasa's real intent was twofold. First, to get revenge for the infamous Mooninite invasion of Boston in 2007, and second, to remind those moon jerks that the Earth still is the big dog on the galactic block … and, well, if you can't run with the big dogs, You Better Stay On The Porch.
