Above: Self-portrait sketch by Paul Crifo, circa 1970s.Paul Crifo, who passed away on September 22nd at the age of 98, was one of the great movie poster illustrators and art directors of the ’60s and ’70s, but he was also an unsung hero. Over the course of 40 years he illustrated and designed as many as 140 movie posters for Hollywood studios, but unlike peers such as Bob Peak or Robert McGinnis, Paul Crifo never became a marquee name.Crifo rarely signed his artwork. If you search his name on Heritage Auctions (as I did after reading his obituary in Variety last week) only one poster comes up: that for In The Heat of the Night (1967). Crifo could have remained nothing more than a footnote in movie poster history were it not for the efforts of his son Peter and his son’s friend Pete Handelman who have given us an invaluable...

Titan Comics' imprint 'Hard Case' will release "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer" #1, June 27, 2018, written by Spillane, Max Allan Collins ("Road To Perdition") and illustrated by Marcelo Salaza, with covers by Robert McGinnis, Alex Ronald and Mack Chater:
"...in 1946, Mickey Spillane, an established comic-book writer, worked with illustrator Mike Roy to create the private-eye character 'Mike Danger' for a proposed comic-book or comic-strip publication. Unable to sell the project as a comic, he reworked the story as the novel 'I, the Jury', converting Mike Danger to 'Mike Hammer'.
"While other hardboiled heroes bend and manipulate the law, Hammer often views it as an impediment to justice, the one virtue he holds in absolute esteem. Hammer nevertheless has a strong respect for the majority of police, realizing they have a difficult job and their hands are frequently tied by the law when trying to stop criminals..."

James Bond fanatics rejoice ... a piece of history can be yours, for a pretty penny. The original DVD illustration for the 2002 release of "Casino Royale" will be auctioned off by Heritage Auctions on Friday the 13th. The painting's by Robert McGinnis and it's expected to fetch anywhere from $15k to $25k. McGinnis also created the artwork poster for the 1967 version of "Casino Royale." But the 2002 illustration -- used again in the 40th anniversary collector's edition...

The beginning of each new year fills us with hope for a better future. You’d think that after a while we’d catch on. After all, we have the same exact hope year after year after year. And after we acknowledge our need for such optimism, we go out and shovel the snow.
For some reason I need not investigate, this first week of 2016 has me in the thralls of nostalgia. This disease is common to comics fans; I think it comes as part of our shared O.C.D. But I’ve been thinking about how much fun I had when I was a wee tyke on my perpetual search for new comics.
Back well-before the days I started yelling at the clouds, I lived for The Great Hunt. We had no idea what was coming out each week, although we did know when certain monthly titles usually...

Robert McGinnis…
For fans of movies of the 1960s and ’70s, his name ranks up there with the stars who made the major studio films of that era. Even though he didn’t actually “make” movies, his work most definitely did. Best known as the artist behind the “classic” James Bond posters, McGinnis worked for almost every publisher and major magazine for decades, putting his distinctive stamp on a huge, well, body of work, which is fully (and gloriously) represented in The Art of Robert E. McGinnis, a lush 176-page hardback now on sale from Titan Books. Since McGinnis is one of the most influential and iconic movie poster artists of the 20th Century, Cinema Retro was pleased to see him honored in this way.
The book starts with McGinnis’s journeyman beginnings in the 1950s Cincinnati and New York advertising scenes, where he toiled away on...

While searching for something to post on Movie Poster of the Day on Christmas Eve, I took a look at the poster for Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story, which I hadn’t paid much attention to before. On closer inspection I recognized it as a pretty perfect pastiche of Norman Rockwell, with its meticulous depiction of a domestic scene in medias res, and down to its details like its circular frame within a frame, its white background, and the parallel black lines mimicking the Saturday Evening Post masthead.
The association with, or subversion of, America’s favorite purveyor of whimsical Americana makes perfect sense in light of the poster’s tagline about the "Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas” and the artist, Robert Tanenbaum, even took his parody a step further by signing his illustration in the style of Rockwell’s trademark stenciled signature.

This week on Poster Friday we’ll be having our martini’s shaken not stirred…hrm, that kind of gives the whole thing away doesn’t it? Oh well I think you got the point.
Click below and lets see what we’ve got, but whatever you do, don’t touch anything!
Our first poster is the teaser poster for Die Another Day by Intralink Film Graphic Design. Before we all realized what a mess the movie would turn out to be, we all thought this poster was rather cool. The design is perfect and so very Bond. Too bad the film turned out to be anything but.
I love this poster for You Only Live Twice by Frank McCarthy in conjunction with Robert McGinnis. It’s just bizarre and impossible but because it’s Bond you just accept that he can stand horizontally on a ladder. Click to embiggen,...

Stephen King's new novel, Joyland (review here), is set to release on June 4th, and we had a chance to chat with the book's editor, Charles Ardai.
Ardai, who is also a producer on the TV show "Haven," spoke about the upcoming release and what fans can expect, working with Stephen King, and lots more.
Amanda Dyar: First off, can you tell us how you got involved with Joyland and why fans should pick it up?
Charles Ardai: In 2005, Hard Case Crime was fortunate enough to get to publish a new book by Stephen King called The Colorado Kid. We stayed in touch on and off over the next 8 years, and at one point Steve sent me email saying he’d just finished writing another book he thought might be right for us, and would I like to take a look. Dear everyone in Hollywood, when you have something as cool as this in your closet of exclusives, be a doll and promptly share it with the world would ya? 'Kay.
Yesterday, director Brad Bird must've been feeling generous or a touch nostalgic because he tweeted out a gander at this awesome unreleased "The Incredibles" goody — a hand-painted poster by Robert McGinnis of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and Bond series artwork fame — nearly a decade after the film's 2004 release.
We're stunned by both the incredible (sorry) detailing and the fact that this has been sitting on a shelf somewhere unseen by the movie-loving public for so long. Shame! Better late than never, we suppose. In all fairness, the poster does reveal a few spoilers about the events of the pic — like Violet Parr's eventually-developed blue power shield and Syndrome's giant arm-slinging war robot.
