Martin Scorsese’s long-suffering biopic about Frank Sinatra has yet to go through some more circles of hell for the definite approval by the legendary singer’s family, but the chances that the movie is happening after all are quite high — at least the director is determined to bring the project to life.
The film already has an impressive duo of Hollywood’ favorites in the leading roles, but this is exactly the reason why Scorsese’s epic movie has all risks to give some really weird vibe after the 2021’s box office hit.
The production is still far from being started, but Scorsese was quick to find his seemingly perfect duo — Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are already confirmed to portray Frank Sinatra and his wife Ava Gardner respectively.
Both actors are not strangers to each other as they once shared the screen in Adam McKay’s 2021 apocalyptic black comedy...

Lynne Ramsay’s next film, Die, My Love, is said to be a Sylvia Plath-style tale of grief that will go before cameras later this year.
Lynne Ramsay’s career as a director spans a quarter of a century, yet she only has four films to her name. Still, when those four films are Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar, We Need to Talk About Kevin and 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, you have the kind of filmography that would make many a filmmaker envious.
Despite not being especially prolific, Ramsay is said to have several projects bubbling away at the minute. We’ve heard in the past that she’s planning to work with Joaquin Phoenix again (following their memorable collaboration in You Were Never Really Here) in Polaris, although its been a couple of years this that story first appeared. Then there’s Stone Mattress, a project featuring Julianne Moore,...

Leonardo DiCaprio has always had a penchant for choosing challenging roles that have required the actor to give every ounce of himself physically and emotionally. From enduring freezing waters in James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic to eating raw bison to prepare for his Oscar-winning turn in The Revenant, the celebrity has never shied away from pushing the envelope.

While many of DiCaprio’s contemporaries may have shunned this type of method acting, the Shutter Island star’s training and skills actually ended up being a saving grace in real life. Netflix doesn’t at all try to hold back from making fun of Prince Andrew in their latest film, Scoop. The Philip Martin-directed film is based on former BBC editor Sam McAlister’s book about securing one of the most sensational interviews of Prince Andrew in the history of the BBC. The context is rather grave, as the interview was focused on the grim subject of Andrew’s friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Billie Piper is electrifying as McAlister, and so is Gillian Anderson, who plays Emily Maitlis, the famous British journalist who took the interview. But it is Rufus Sewell who delivers the standout performance as the controversial Prince. However, the film still falls quite flat, as, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really offer anything substantial to the viewers. Despite all the brilliant performances, Scoop remains just another Netflix...

The creative force behind the American sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave, Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, are getting the band back together after landing a pilot at HBO for their new project, The Chair Company. The King of the Monsters is standing taller than ever since he became a surprise Oscar-winner earlier this month, but filmdom’s most famous kaiju isn’t about to let his newfound prestige get the better of him. Anyone worried that Godzilla might pull an Adam McKay and make a sudden pivot towards self-importance will be delighted to find that “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” eagerly strips both of its namesakes of whatever seriousness they might have accrued over the years, even if that means stripping them of their souls along with it.
Don’t be confused by the multiplication suggested by the silent “x” in its title: This goofy-ass, clumsily assembled Saturday morning cartoon of a movie might as well be called “Godzilla Minus Everything,” if only because the more accurate “Godzilla Minus Everything Plus Dan Stevens in a Hawaiian Shirt” wouldn’t fit on a marquee.

Hollywood stars Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio shared the screen in the 2021 dark comedy Don’t Look Up. The film follows two astronomers who attempt to warn the world about the impending disaster after they discover a comet on a collision course with Earth, but are faced with skepticism, and political obstacles along the way. The film received mixed reviews.

Additionally, American Fiction — based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett — is nominated for the WGA Award for best adapted screenplay.

In what is no surprise, Warner Bros Motion Picture Group is getting into business with its Dune and Wonka star Timothée Chalamet, and has hammered a multi-year first look feature film deal with the Oscar nominee as actor and producer.
Between the Dune movies and Wonka, Chalamet’s recent pics with the Burbank, CA lot have delivered $1.6 billion to studio coffers. Chalamet became the first actor in over four decades to star in the top two domestic-grossing films released in an 8-month period.
The latest talent deal is one of many hammered out by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-Chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, as they set their future slate at the studio. Since being announced for the top studio job at Warner Bros back in June 2022, the duo have made deals with Tom Cruise, Jon M. Chu, and T Street’s Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.

Earlier this week, we all experienced the first day of spring 2024. We're now fully in the season of rejuvenation, of tossing out the old and bringing in the new, and literally nothing -- not the most intense spring cleaning session, or even the most spectacular miracles of nature itself -- better represents that than the churn of films and TV shows leaving the Netflix streaming service as its rotating library is partially shaken out and replenished with a fresh round of titles.
We know what movies and shows are arriving in April, but what about the projects that are getting the boot and being scattered into the digital ether, potentially disappearing for a while or perhaps popping up on some other streaming service altogether? Thankfully, we have that information at our fingertips as well. And with just a few days left in the month, consider this a ticking clock reminder...

An explosive political drama retracing the 2018 murders of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová, “Our People” claimed the best project award at this year’s Series Mania Forum.
Winning €50,000 in prize money and earning an enhanced international stature, the unflinching miniseries should now see an easier path forward – particularly given the chilly reception it found with funding authorities in native Slovakia.
“We thought it impossible,” said director Tereza Nvotova as she claimed the Series Mania prize. “We thought it was dead, because the government in Slovakia really doesn’t want this story told. And we think this story is so important not just because of what is happening in Slovakia, and not just because Jan and Martina were murdered.”
“We just want to tell the truth,” Nvotova continued. “The world is turning very dark, and I think we all can feel it. We are all scared and...

Our People, a political drama series from Slovakia, has won the prize for best pitch at the 2024 Series Mania television festival.
The series explores the true story of the 2018 assassination of Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, at their home. Prior to his death, Kuicak had exposed corruption at the highest level of national politics, drawing connections between political leaders, mafia bosses and corrupt businessmen. The twin murders shocked the country and triggered a political crisis, eventually leading to the collapse of the Slovak government.
Tereza Nvotová and Miro Sifra co-wrote Our People, with Nvotová directing and Jakub Viktorín and Tomáš Hrubý producing for nutprodukcia. Nvotová said she drew inspiration from the work of Adam McKay (Vice, The Big Short) to combine humor with the dark subject matter of the series, which is based on more than 50,000 pages of case files.

Greenhouse has its two leads in place as Adam McKay looks to tackle global warming in his follow-up to 2021’s Don’t Look Up.
Adam McKay’s last film was the star-studded Netflix comedy drama Don’t Look Up. The film was widely viewed on the streaming platform and lots of folks enjoyed its satirical take on the way the human race might reasonably be expected to respond if an Extinction Level Event chanced to head in our general direction.
For one reason or another, however, Adam McKay’s plans for a further collaboration with Netflix were dropped. The Vice filmmaker had announced the serial killer comedy drama Average Height, Average Build as his next project. The cast had been named too, with Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr, Forest Whitaker and Danielle Deadwyler set to form the kind of starry ensemble that McKay was able to bring together for Don’t Look Up.

It's been 23 years since Christopher Nolan dazzled moviegoers with his breakout neo-noir "Memento," and he has more than made good on that film's overwhelming promise. In terms of building a Hollywood filmmaking career, there's not a single misstep in his filmography. He proved himself capable of handling a major studio picture with "Insomnia," did a graceful one-for-them/one-for-me two-step between Batman movies and personal projects, and now can call his tune at an unprecedented level. Every studio wants Nolan, and they're willing to give him anything he wants to lock him down.
And now that he's about to win the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for "Oppenheimer" (a three-hour biopic that is currently $60 million short of a $1 billion worldwide gross), his rate is about to get a significant bump.
Given that Nolan has never gone more than three years between movies, it's not too early to speculate as to what he'll do next.

Netflix comedy movies in March 2024 cover every subgenre in the category. Whether you’re looking to stream slapstick, a rom-com, or something with a side of horror, Netflix’s March additions have something for you.
While any time is a good time to watch a comedy, springtime and laughs can go hand-in-hand. With warmer weather (and summer blockbusters) around the corner, spend your March with Netflix’s best comedy movies.
‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ Coming to Netflix March 1
Celebrate comedy legend Chris Farley by streaming Beverly Hills Ninja on Netflix beginning March 1. The 1997 martial arts comedy marks the final film released during Farley’s lifetime, as the actor died less than a year after its release.
Farley stars as Haru, adopted as a child by a clan of ninjas who believe he’ll become the master promised in legends. As expected, Haru never entirely becomes a ninja despite his best efforts.

Imax saw sales dip in the fourth quarter to $86 million from $98 million, in line with Wall Street forecasts, as the company focused on the full year and its accelerated global expansion. The stock has popped more than 8% in after-market trading on the numbers and outlook.
Adjusted ebitdawas $23 million (also down from the year ago), and Eps was flat at 5 cents a share, also in line.
The fourth quarter was hit by big ticket films moving out of 2023. Oppenheimer, which came out over the summer — in Q2 – was a big boost.
Full-year 2023 revenue jumped 25% to $375 million.
“As the entertainment landscape transforms, it is clear that IMAX is among its premier, in-demand destinations,” said CEO Rich Gelfond. He’s upbeat about Dune: Part 2, which opens this weekend and will get an Imax run. Both Oppenheimer and the new Dune were filmed in Imax.

Slovakia’s explosive political drama “Our People” will head to Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions in March.
Produced by Jakub Viktorín and Tomáš Hrubý for nutprodukcia and written by Miro Šifra, it will be directed by Tereza Nvotová.
The miniseries, inspired by tragic real events, depicts the killing of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kušnírová.
Kuciak used to focus on tax frauds committed by business figures and alleged connections between local politicians and the Italian mafia. They were assassinated in 2018 in their home.
“We not only have their family’s consent, but also tens of thousands of pages of case files,” said Šifra.
“These documents provide a detailed and fascinating glimpse into the interplay between the state and the mafia. They also highlight the courage of those who risk their lives to expose this.”

A Joe Biden-Donald Trump rematch this year hasn’t exactly excited American voters, at least if you believe early polls. On the other hand, a dramatic Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) vs. Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) face-off could lead to record turnout at the ballot box and the box office.

Well, it would be if the scandal-plagued Potus from Don’t Look Up hadn’t been eaten on another planet in the credits of the Adam McKay-directed satire. Then again, another West Wing reunion with Sheen back as the New Hampshire-born Bartlet would likely garner more attention than 2024’s real life New Hampshire primary.

Exclusive: While high-profile packages have been flourishing following the ends of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the spec market also looks to have some pop to it as sources tell Deadline that Netflix has landed the female-driven genre thriller Apex from scribe Jeremy Robbins. Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment will produce. Netflix declined comment.
The script is described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.
The sale comes at an interesting time in a post-strike landscape where studios see a need for new original stories to fill their development slates, and the spec and packaging markets have reaped the rewards. Prior to the WGA strike in May, the market was not as robust as reps cautioned their clients about how hard it is to sell a script with talent attached, let alone a spec on its own.

Both Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay are full of beautiful writing, with a variety of genres and writers being acknowledged for their work this year.
We have previous Oscar winners nominated, such as Josh Singer, who co-wrote “Maestro” with Bradley Cooper; previous nominees such as “Oppenheimer” scribe Christopher Nolan and “Poor Things” penman Tony McNamara; and we have a whole bunch of first-time nominees such as “Past Lives” writer and director Celine Song.
But… could we have two first-time nominees win both writing categories? Oscar history says this is unlikely; this has not happened a single time in the last 10 years. There have, however, been five instances in both categories where rookie contenders have won the Oscar.
Best Original Screenplay
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” in 2023 Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” in 2021 Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won for “Parasite” in 2020 Brian Currie,...

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.
However, they won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay, over “Cold War” (Janusz Głowacki and Paweł Pawlikowski), “Green Book,” “Roma” (Alfonso Cuarón), and “Vice” (Adam McKay). The film won six other BAFTAs in total,...

Actors and married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie are set to star in the horror film “Together.” The feature comes from first-time writer/director Michael Shanks.
“Together” will explore “the horror of co-dependency told in a unique way,” with additional details being kept under wraps. Franco and Brie will also produce the film, alongside Picturestart, Tango, 1.21 and Princess Pictures. Tango, Picturestart and 30West are financing.
The real-life couple’s last collaboration, 2023’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” was the first film they co-wrote together, with Brie starring and Franco directing. The romantic comedy followed Brie’s character Ally, a TV producer who questions all of her life choices when she returns to her hometown and reunites with an ex-boyfriend.
Brie also starred in Franco’s 2020 directorial debut “The Rental,” a horror movie chronicling two couples who rent a vacation home for a celebratory weekend. They previously acted together...

Ever since The Big Short, Adam McKay’s winking and sardonic explainer about the 2008 financial crisis, a redundant cottage industry of similar-minded criminal biopics has tried to capitalize on the director’s witty and righteous formula. Inserting self-aware narration and commentary at the top of—and throughout—a movie isn’t exactly a new technique. It’s just that, at this point, freeze frames and slow motion sequences of exclamatory moments, coupled with “You’re probably wondering how I got here” preambles feel like uninspired choices. But that’s how Winner, the second movie in the last year to document Nsa whistleblower Reality Winner, chooses to begin this unexpectedly bouncy dramedy—with its protagonist in handcuffs and a lighthearted “let me explain” attitude.
It’s a jarring change in tone if you’ve seen Reality, last year’s lean and mean Max offering featuring Sydney Sweeney in one of her best roles to date.

Adam McKay’s non-profit Yellow Dot Studios has released several videos across social media over the past week for their #ImWithScience campaign, but the most viral one yet is a “Game of Thrones” parody video starring Rainn Wilson (“The Office”) and the “Game of Thrones” cast.
In the four-minute video, titled “A Tale of Fire and Ice,” Wilson is a climate scientist brought in from the future to warn the Westeros Court, consisting of Queen Cersai (Lena Headey), Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) about the dangers of “Big Oil.”
In his presentation, Wilson charts the effects of oil pollution since the creation of Exxon in the ’70s: “They bought the politicians and the media to spread lies about the very science that they knew to be true because….profit!” he rages to the unamused court.

We used to be a proper country, inundated with the works of filmmakers like Judd Apatow, Adam McKay, and Paul Feig, starring big name talent like Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, and Jason Segel, just to name a few of the actors who led big studio comedies that were hitting the big screen left and right. Sadly, times have changed, and it's hard to find a successor to "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," the next "Superbad" or "Bridesmaids," or even another "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
This year alone, you'd be hard-pressed to find movies that are just straight up comedies. Sure, "Barbie" is incredibly funny, but it's not your average straight-up comedy. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves...

Season one of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” ended on an appropriately triumphant note with the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the Boston Celtics in the 1980 NBA Championships. Not only was Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) vindicated after his tumultuous first year as franchise owner, but budding superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Quincy Isaiah) and his seasoned counterpart Kareen Abdul-Jabbar (Solomon Hughes) put aside their differences to unite their teammates both on and off the court. For the acclaimed HBO series, repeating that success — dramatically, much less historically — would prove a more difficult challenge, and not just because in real life the Lakers wouldn’t win a second title for two years, and three more for a third.
After helming two episodes in Season One (including that nail-biting finale), Salli Richardson-Whitfield graduated to executive producer for Season Two. Looking forward not only at the complicated trajectory of the...

A self-published novelist is claiming Adam McKay ripped off a book he wrote for his 2021 Netflix movie Don’t Look Up in a new lawsuit.
William Collier claims that in 2007, he wrote a novel called Stanley’s Comet, which was later self-published in 2012. The suit describes Stanley’s Comet as a “dark comedy” about low-level NASA scientists who discover a giant comet hurtling towards Earth, but their attempts to warn the public about the danger are dismissed and downplayed by politicians and media figures.
Collier alleges that McKay had access to his book.

An author claims that Netflix and writer-director Adam McKay took the plot and tone from his “strikingly similar” 2004 novel, and is suing for $5m in damages.
The 2021 satire Don’t Look Up saw writer-director Adam McKay and his collaborators nominated for four Academy Awards. But according to author William Collier, the story didn’t spring from McKay, but from a novel called Stanley’s Comet, which Collier wrote in 2004 and self-published eight years later.
Collier’s work is also about the discovery of a comet heading towards Earth, and also sees our planet’s population respond apathetically to the incoming threat. In fact, Collier believes that Stanley’s Comet and Don’t Look Up are so “strikingly similar” that the author’s suing McKay, Netflix and other parties involved with the film for a minimum of $5m.
According to Collier’s complaint, a copy of which has been obtained by The Hollywood Reporter,...

A writer who claims the 2021 comedy “Don’t Look Up” was substantially similar to his self-published novel is suing writer-director Adam McKay and Netflix for copyright infringement.
Author William Collier says that in 2007, he sent his daughter, who was working at Mosaic Media division Jimmy Miller Entertainment, an email with the text of his novel “Stanley’s Comet,” for the company to consider as material. Collier alleges that his novel had numerous themes and plot points in common with “Don’t Look Up,” which McKay is said to have written in 2019. Jimmy Miller Entertainment was McKay’s manager at the time and collaborated with him on films such as “Talladega Nights.”
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court, Central District of California on Wednesday. Collier is named as plaintiff, while McKay, his production company Hyperobject Industries and Netflix are defendants.
“The plot of both works is practically identical,” the lawsuit alleges.
