It’s never too early to review Christmas movies is it?! In fact, this isn’t the first Christmas horror movie I’ve reviewed for Nerdly this year, but now it’s November expect a few more. Splinter shows a man whose wife and son were murdered over Christmas, and he has now become a recluse. Despite Christmas now being long gone, the decorations and tree are still up, and he believes something or someone is watching him. Is it the ghosts of his wife and son, or something much worse?
Director David Bryant does a good job of making you forget about the movie’s low budget. He keeps the film character-driven, with plenty of dialogue and a strong story. It’s a brave move in...

Gravitas Ventures has given a digital release to writer/director David Bryant’s new psychological chiller Splinter, and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to see, we have the trailer embedded at the top of this article. If you do want to check Splinter out, you can do so at This Link.
Starring Bill Fellows (Coronation Street), Splinter tells the following story: Following the murder of his family, John becomes a recluse, trapped inside his home. Surrounded by memories, he believes someone, or something, is watching him. Could it be the ghosts of his wife and son, or something far worse?
Splinter was produced by Filo Films and Sea and Sky Pictures.
Bryant had this to say about the film: “I wanted to tell a traditionally haunting tale full of tension but present it in a realistic portrayal of one man’s mental breakdown.

Following on from Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing and Ripper Untold, Leicester-based filmmaker Steve Lawson returns with his third take on classic cinematic villains with Jekyll & Hyde; and like those aforementioned movies his story doesn’t take the traditional route, retelling the same story we’ve heard before with a new slant… It’s an interesting low-budget adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella, Jekyll and Hyde, that’s for sure.
Though if you are looking for a formula, Lawson does follow that which he set out in Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing and Ripper Untold, namely that the film is small-scale, with minimal locations and feels much like a stage play (which it would be if not for the trip to Jekyll’s home) than cinematic...

The feature debut from acclaimed commercials director Dom Bridges and written by Rae Brunton (the Outpost franchise) Freehold is a dark urban morality tale with an underlying streak of jet black comedy. Hussein, a wide-boy estate agent, doesn’t realise he’s sharing his apartment with a forgotten stranger, a master of concealment… until his malicious campaign of deranged sweet revenge starts to really hit home. A roof above our heads is a basic human need so why are we all fighting each other over it?
Originally titled 2Pigeons (a title that has more in common with the films story than you can imagine), Freehold shares a lot in common with previous Frightfest flicks Housebound and Hangman, in so much as all three films deal with homes being encroached...

A team of fearless Russian Spetsnaz unearth details of the shocking research being taken out by the Nazis. Before they’re able to report on this discovery, the Spetsnaz are savagely captured by the Nazis and detained at an underground facility. It’s revealed that the Nazis are scientifically developing an invincible army of undead soldiers to unleash upon the unsuspecting Allies. If the Spetsnaz are to survive this ordeal, and subsequently the war, they must fight their way through a series of gladiatorial battles with the experimental undead to escape the brutal facility before the Nazis can perfect their research and send their zombie army across Europe.

Leviathan (12A)
(Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Véréna Paravel, 2012, Fra/UK/Us) 87 mins
An arthouse fishing-trawler documentary sounds like a practical joke, but this takes us to places we've never before – into the ocean depths and back out on to the decks with the catch. It's a series of dark, semi-abstract tableaux full of flapping fish, clanking machinery and tattooed fishermen doing wet, gory work. It's easy to forget this is real life you're watching.
Saving Mr Banks (PG)
(John Lee Hancock, 2013, Us) Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson. 125 mins
How Walt Disney came to make Mary Poppins was hardly a pressing movie mystery, and one suspects a spoonful of drama has been added, but the leads are eminently watchable.

(Kimberly Peirce, 2013, Us) Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore. 100 mins

Michael McKell has insisted that his twisted Emmerdale character Nick Henshall did not intend to hurt anybody when he started the village's recent blaze. The police detective was the arsonist behind January's inferno, which claimed the lives of long-standing residents Viv Hope and Terry Woods. However, speaking to Inside Soap, McKell explained that Henshall was trying to make amends for a tragic incident from his past when he started the fire. The actor commented: "Henshall's wife died in a blaze while he was a constable, but the attack was targeting him. Some bad guys tried to take revenge on him for an investigation and Henshall couldn't rescue his wife. "Because he felt powerless to help, (more)...
