- William McKinley (January 29, 1843 - September 14, 1901) was the 25th president of the United States, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. He was president during the Spanish-American War of 1898, raised protective tariffs to boost American industry, and rejected the expansionary monetary policy of free silver, keeping the nation on the gold standard.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Bonitao
- After attending school, he taught himself in schools in Ohio. In the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, McKinley fought on the side of the Union troops. He then studied law and opened a law practice in Canton in 1867. At the same time, William McKinley began to get involved with the Republican Party, for which he was represented in the House of Representatives from 1877 to 1883 and 1885 to 1891. In Congress he advocated for a policy of high protective tariffs, which led to the passage of the "McKinley Tariff" of 1890. After leaving the legislature, McKinley was elected governor of Ohio, where he served from 1892 to 1896. In this role, he gained the sympathy of workers' interest groups through his labor market policy initiatives. In 1896, William McKinley won the presidential election.
He entered the White House in 1897 as the 25th US President. His first term in office was marked by tariff policy reforms and the introduction of the gold standard in 1900. The importance of the president's domestic policy successes was, of course, overshadowed by his foreign policy on the Cuba question: the Cuban revolution against Spanish rule had been going on since 1895 violent repression by Spain. Under public pressure, McKinley was forced to enter war with Spain in 1898. The Spanish-American War ended with a quick victory for the United States. Under pressure from powerful interest groups in the United States, the president chose to annex the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam, while Cuba became independent.
In the rest of his foreign policy, McKinley aimed for a strategy of economic penetration, which he tried to enforce with the other powers through his diplomatic plea for an "open door" policy in accordance with the new global political function of the USA. In the 1900 election campaign, McKinley was re-elected by a large majority. The president's second term in office was determined by the internal consolidation of the acquired territories. However, a few months after his second inauguration, on September 6, 1901, the president was hit by a bullet from an anarchist assassin, Leon F. Czolgosz.
William McKinley died a few days later, on September 14, 1901, in Buffalo as a result of the assassination attempt.- IMDb Mini Biography By: Christian_Wolfgang_Barth
