Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.
The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!
Billed as a gothic adventure, Grylu Sker is the tale of a lost explorer set in a world of Icelandic folklore written by Tab Murphy and Icelandic author Sjón (co-writer of The Northman). It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is full of strange, freaky, and delightful treasures. The Netflix anthology series boasts a treasure trove of horrors that range from the otherworldly and Lovecraftian to the deceptively mundane. But for fans of practical effects, one of the cabinet's residents stands tail and shoulders above the rest: the Rat Queen.
The Rat Queen makes her grand entrance in the appropriately named episode "Graveyard Rats," which is directed by Vincenzo Natali ("Splice") and stars David Hewlett as a grave robber trapped in a cycle of bad luck. Hewlett's Masson is in bad shape by the time he meets the Rat Queen, downtrodden and seemingly doomed to never get the money he needs. Also, he's plagued by rats for much of the episode's runtime. Lots and lots of rats. Needless to say, this is an episode of TV you should skip if you're afraid of the creatures.

I've got some incredible concept art to share with you for a new supernatural samurai fantasy film being made called The Haunted Swordsman. On top of the beautiful art that was created for the film, you have to know that the movie is being made with puppets, which takes the whole project to a new level of awesomeness.
The Haunted Swordsman is “a live action samurai tale set in a world of demons and ghosts that will utilize 36-inch tall bunraku puppets, traditional in-camera effects, and good old-fashioned smoke and mirrors trickery.”
If that doesn't get you excited for this film project, I don't know what will. The movie is being developed by creature effects artist and model maker Kevin McTurk, and the concept art was done by Guy Davis, who previously worked on the Guillermo del Toro films such as Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water.

That guy on the right? He's a puppet. Really. If you check the picture closely, you can see the hand that moves his arm. Director Kevin McTurk has won many awards already with his amazing work in the past, most notably his short The Mill at Calder's End. His fans include people like Guillermo Del Toro, Mike Mignola and Rick Baker. Kevin is now preparing a series of short films starring The Haunted Swordsman, about (quoting his webpage) "...a lone samurai and his odd guide, the cursed severed head of another samurai, as they traverse a world of mythical creatures and nightmares of folklore..." Note that his films are live-action, Not stop-motion or animation. You see actual puppets being moved in real-time. To do it...

A trailer for The Mill at Calder’s End, the latest Victorian Ghost Story Puppet short film from director Kevin McTurk has finally been released and it looks incredible. The film is told with the traditional Japanese theater puppetry technique known as bunraku. Each puppet figure is controlled by three (or more) puppeteers dressed in black and hidden behind each character, and several silent film era camera techniques, such as shots of miniatures are also used.
Synopsis:
The Mill at Calder’s End is a gothic ghost story in the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft that will be told with 30 inch tall bunraku puppets and old fashioned in-camera special effects.Featuring the voices of Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, X-Men:First Class) and horror legend Barbara Steele (Black Sunday, The Pit and the Pendulum) , this film celebrates two of my great loves: the art of puppetry and gothic horror.

Don't call Kevin McTurk an animator. Because he's not. No, he doesn't work with live actors and, yes, his characters are crafted and manipulated by hand, but that's where the similarity to stop motion animation ends. McTurk is not an animator but a creature designer and puppeteer and a damn fine one at that. And his latest creation - the gothic horror The Mill At Calder's End - looks absolutely gorgeous. In this gothic puppet tale, Nicholas Grimshaw has returned home to unearth the dark secret of the Mill at Calder's End.Citing the influence of Hp Lovecraft, Edgar Alan Poe, Mario Bava and Jim Henson; boasting the voice talent of Jason Flemyng and Barbara Steele; featuring Hellboy creator Mike Mignola among its concept artists and boasting...
