Rising star Phoenix Raei joins Hugo Weaving as the lead of “The Rooster,” an Australian mystery drama film in which a small-town cop discovers the dead body of his best friend.
The film, which has just completed principal photography in Victoria state, is directed by actor Mark Leonard Winter (“Escape From Pretoria”), making his debut as a feature director.
As performers, Weaving and Winter have previously appeared together in “Measure for Measure” and “The Dressmaker.”
Raei, who has recent credits in “Clickbait,” “Stateless” and “The Night Agent,” stars in “The Rooster” as the cop who confronts Weaving’s volatile character, a forest-dwelling hermit who was the last person known to have seen his pal.
Other cast include: Helen Thomson, Rhys Mitchell, Bert La Bonte, John Waters, Camilla Ah Kin, Robert Menzies and Deirdre Rubenstein.
“ ‘The Rooster’ is a gripping story about friendship and how hope can come from unlikely places.

Exclusive: XLrator Media will co-produce, release in the Us and oversee international distribution on three action-thrillers.
XLrator will co-produce, release in the Us and oversee international distribution on the slate.
Gordon is one of a small coterie of savvy low-overhead players in Us distribution who want to build a sustainable model for films and avoid ‘statement buys’ that are liable to run out of steam after the first window.
The move comes hot on the heels of a similar pact on sci-fi thrillers that XLrator struck with New Artists Alliance.
Michael Hurst’s time-travel story Paradox kicks off the Rnr slate and will commence shooting in spring for a 2016 release.
Rick Benattar, who runs Rnr with Nigel Thomas and Robert Menzies, produced Ironclad and Ironclad: Battle For Blood, both of which XLrator released in North America.

Encore visited the set of the ABC espionage drama-documentary I Spry. Director Peter Butt, producer Anna Grieve, wardrobe designer Beverley Freeman and Dop Calvin Gardiner spoke to Aravind Balasubramaniam about the research that went into recreating the feel of the 1950s, and the importance of revisiting those shadowy parts of the country’s history that have got lost over time.
Historian and award-winning filmmaker Peter Butt’s latest production for the ABC, I Spry, is the dramatised documentary on perhaps Australia’s greatest spy Sir Charles Chambers Fowell Spry and his time in office. Spry was appointed by Prime Minister Robert Menzies, at the heat of the Cold War in the 1950s, as director-general of the Asio [Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation]. He is played by stage and film actor Tony Llewellyn-Jones.
Peter Butt, who has familiarised himself well with the place of espionage and intelligence in Australian history has also produced other documentaries on the subject such as Lies,...

Part Two: 1969-1989
1. Engines of Change
Continued from Part One
Few explanations for the almost unprecedented resuscitation of Australian cinema between 1969 and 1975 are immediately satisfying. Perhaps the most important changes were the most difficult to quantify, but it is easy to see that 1968 was one of the most important years in contemporary Australian history. A popular referendum gave equal citizenship to indigenous Australians after decades of excision from the communal dialogue. Demonstrations over a visit by Lyndon Johnson, and against Australia's follow-the-leader involvement in Vietnam, illustrated the rise of a new, protest-based counterculture, and a popular objection to the idea of the United States take Britain's place in dictating Australian international policy soon expanded into a new thirst for self-definition. The same year also saw the foundation of the Australian Council for the Arts, a federal panel for sponsoring cultural projects, after a sustained demand for aid...
