Cress Williams, Kellan Lutz and Anne Heche are starring in “What Remains,” a murder mystery that is shooting in Texas.
The film centers on a small town pastor (Williams) forced to contend with an act of forgiveness when the convict (Lutz) he forgave for murdering his wife returns to town five years later. At the same time, the town sheriff (Heche) is investigating another murder that may be related.
The indie film is written and directed by Nathan Scoggins, who previously wrote, produced and directed “The Least of These” and “The Perfect Summer.” Ralph Winter and Korey Pollard (“Chicago Fire”) serve as executive producers. The film is being co-financed by Sharpened Iron Studios. Sean Doherty, founder and CEO of Sharpened Iron, is also on board as an executive producer.
Other notable cast members include Marcus Gladney Jr and Stelio Savante. Grammy-winning composer Mateo Messina is providing the score.

CBS All Access’ “Why Women Kill” set its first-season action in three distinct time periods: the 1960s, 1980s and present-day, promising a titular payoff in each time period by the end of the season. In the finale, titled “Kill Me as If It Were the Last Time,” creator and showrunner Marc Cherry crafted an intricate slow-motion montage that weaved the pivotal deaths together across timelines. While the Pasadena mansion had previously been the only character that carried over from storyline to storyline, this montage saw all the central characters sharing the same space. Although it was staged like a play, it was not done entirely in one shot; director David Warren covered individual pieces and performers in closeup, with their period-accurate set dressing behind them. The sequence includes a tango, a tussle on the staircase and a fistfight that turns into a gun showdown — and, of course, the answers to...

The Newman scoring stage at 20th Century-Fox was overflowing with people – and good will – as Ascap last night celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Film Scoring Workshop with a studio recording session for the 12 lucky young composers chosen to participate.
“This is like a window into the time continuum, where you can look into the future and see those who are going to make a real contribution to film music,” Ascap president and chairman Paul Williams said. “It’s a cultural gift in one sense, but on another level it’s a really smart business investment.”
The performing-rights society sponsors this four-week event for emerging film and TV composers every summer, with Emmy winner Richard Bellis at the helm. Ascap arranges meetings with agents, lawyers, studio executives and experienced composers; this year’s field trips included visits to the studios of Junkie Xl (“Mad Max Fury Road”), Matthew Margeson...

With this week’s release of its fourth and final season, “Casual” finished a magical run. One of Hulu’s first original series, the show managed its main characters’ personal turmoil with great care, avoiding some of the teen and midlife cliches that can befall so many other TV shows.
Aside from sharp writing and an influx of strong directorial voices, “Casual” also greatly benefited from having the best soundtrack in the business. It’s a catalogue of songs, bridging decades’ worth of sensibilities, that worked in concert with Mateo Messina’s gentle, understanding score to make a solid musical foundation for the show’s 44 episodes.
As music supervisor for all four seasons, Tricia Halloran helped bring together that wide-ranging collection of songs, from Dirty Projectors to Cyndi Lauper, Sinkane to Richard Hawley, Anderson .Paak to Lucius. As Halloran told IndieWire, her process benefited from a great amount of trust...

Two major performance-rights organizations announced this week the launch of workshops designed to aid up-and-coming film and TV composers: Ascap, for film scoring; and Bmi, for conducting.
Both are multi-week events for which hundreds apply annually, and the two will culminate in live recording sessions at Los Angeles area studios later this month.
Ascap began its 30th annual Film Scoring Workshop today, with Emmy-winning composer Richard Bellis as mentor and Ascap film and TV executives Michael Todd and Jennifer Harmon producing.
It’s a comprehensive, four-week program that has proven a launching pad for many composers in the past, including Jim Dooley (“Pushing Daisies”), Rob Duncan (“Castle”), Matthew Margeson (the “Kingsman” movies), Cliff Martinez (“Drive”), Mateo Messina (“Juno”) and Austin Wintory (“Journey”).
This year’s 12 composers — chosen from nearly 400 applicants — include Shaun Crawford of Cape Town, South Africa; Damien Lane of Cambewarra, Australia; Kyle Laporte of Playa Del Rey, Calif.

If we had to pick one grossly underrated film from 2011, definitely high up on our collective list would be Jason Reitman's "Young Adult." And if we had to pick one criminally undervalued performance from 2011 that deserved to score an Oscar nomination but didn't, Charlize Theron's dark, raw and funny turn in this brilliant and bittersweet picture would be right up there as well. So two pretty strong reasons why you should catch up on this film if you missed it earlier in the year, not to mention we described it in our review as "unflinchingly funny and painful" and gave it an A-grade to boot.
Directed by Jason Reitman ("Juno," "Up In The Air") and written by Diablo Cody ("Juno," "Jennifer's Body"), the dramedy centers on Mavis Gary (played by Charlize Theron), a young-adult fiction writer who, soon after her divorce, returns to her home in small-town Minnesota...

Young Adult
Directed by: Jason Reitman
Cast: Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson
Running Time: 1 hr 34 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: December 9, 2011
Plot: Former prom queen turned ghostwriter Mavis (Theron) returns to her quaint homeland of Mercury, Minnesota to win back the high school sweetheart who got away and then got married, Buddy Slade (Wilson).
Who’S It For?: Teenagers of the ’90s, and fans of either Reitman or writer Diablo Cody. Seniors in high school now should especially see this in order to get a sense of what their social status really adds up to after graduation. How wonderful it would be if Young Adult could cure a few Mavis Gary’s before this becomes a variation on their inevitable autobiography.
Expectations: Considering this is the reuniting of the duo that made Juno, I was curious as to what kind of attitude Young Adult would have. Was it going to be snarky?...

I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. Let us know if you think we left out any soundtracks you would recommend. Enjoy!
10 – Young Adult
One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.

Washington State used to be a hotbed of superhero activity. Walla Walla, Washington was the birthplace of Batman’s Adam West. In the 1980s, DC Comics’ Green Arrow hunted serial killers in and about Seattle’s Pioneer Square. In the ’90s, Marvel’s Iron Man moved his base of operations to West Seattle and even saved the Space Needle from Fin Fang Foom! On TV, Jessica Alba’s Dark Angel protected a post-nuclear Seattle from mutants and mercenaries. However, since Dark Angel’s cancellation, the Pacific Northwest has been largely superhero-free. That’s about to change. Film composer Mateo Messina, responsible for the catchy Juno soundtrack and the quirky The Ex List TV show, is returning to his hometown Seattle on Friday, November 6 to present his “Symphony for a Superhero.” It will take place at Benaroya Hall, with proceeds to benefit the Seattle Children’s Hospital. Messina will also be...
