Surprise: these are quality movies on an important subject. Entry 13 in the ‘Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture’ gives us not sleaze but two well-produced vintage public education epics on the subject of (gasp) venereal disease. Although reissued by sensation hucksters as racy ‘forbidden’ fare, they had serious social aims — the screenplay for one was adapted by the famed author Upton Sinclair. The other was directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. Added extras are four short subjects directed by Edgar G., and two sex-ed lecture reels that alternate between funny and revolting.

This classy late-’30s Park Avenue romp gives us Katharine Heburn and Cary Grant at their best; Grant is especially good in a particularly demanding comedy role. The original play is warmed up a bit with comedy touches, and some pointed political barbs slip in there as well. The marvelous acting ensemble gives terrific material to favorites like Jean Dixon and Edward Everett Horton.

“Am I decent?” They said that Ginger Rogers gave Fred Astaire sex appeal, but the teaming of Astaire and Rita Hayworth is something else. Columbia’s 1941 release is a weak service comedy until the dancing starts, at which point it becomes one of the better musicals of the year – and the breakout vehicle for Ms. Hayworth.

The Flick:
Blending reality and sensationalized fiction, Norwegian Ninja wins as a completely original film that takes its humor seriously. The title alone is an ingenious marketing device that sparks curiosity (Norway has ninjas?). Fortunately for the producing team behind Dead Snow, this interesting documentary styled late night classic works on every level.
The flick stars Mads Oussdal as Kommandør Arne Treholt, a character based on the real life Trehold, a Norwegian diplomat sent to prison for treason on behalf of the Soviet Union. Only, in director Thomas Cappelen Malling’s marvelous tale Trehold is actually the head of a covert ninja force that lives on an island protected by Feng shui. His team of ninjas work directly for King Olav and protect Norway from evil and communists. Everything is hunky dory, that is until Otto Meyer (Jon Øigarden), the head of an secret anti-communist group called Stay Behind, decide...
