This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in July, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature a giant monster bug, home invaders, a zombie boy, a killer videographer, and a water spirit.
Blue Monkey (1987)
Directed by William Fruet.
As its name suggests, Pandemonium Day (July 14) is all about bedlam. And William Fruet’s Canadian tax-shelter movie Blue Monkey (a.k.a. Insect!) is as chaotic as they come. Originally called “Green Monkey” at one point, this movie’s final title is still a misnomer; there are no monkeys here. Instead, the characters battle a deadly parasite inside a quarantined hospital.

This April saw the return of the Amsterdamned Film Festival after two years of postponements and cancellations due to lock-downs. And what could be a better way to open such a long-missed event than with the world premiere of a Dutch Covid-19-inspired psychological thriller? For that is exactly what director Chris W. Mitchell's film The Revelation is. At the start of the story, it's February 2020 and while the news pays some attention to the new disease which is spreading out of china, fifty-something It-manager Jacob is sure of it: this is going to be the mother of all pandemics. Having recently lost his father, who he revered, Jacob is obsessed with the thought that he might now lose his mother as well, because the...

Massacre this, massacre that… Thanks to the infamy of Tobe Hooper’s now-classic 70s exploitation shocker The Texas Chainsaw Massacre it seems that we can’t escape a horrifying cinematic massacre… The latest film to share this horror moniker is The Windmill Massacre – an odd title, and an even odder location for a horror movie. But, to steal a much-maligned English idiom, don’t judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, a film by it’s title.
The Windmill Massacre tells the story of Jennifer, an Australian girl on the run who – after having her secret discovered at the Amsterdam home she works at as a nanny – joins a coach load of tourists on an idyllic rural tour of Holland’s world-famous windmills. However when...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Mongrel Media. **there are a few minor spoilers here. Director: Nick Jongerius. Writers: Nick Jongerius, Chris W. Mitchell and Suzy Quid. Cast: Noah Taylor, Charlotte Beaumont, Patrick Baladi, Adam Thomas Wright and Ben Batt. Nick Jongerius' first feature film was initially titled The Windmill Massacre. In the United States and Canadian markets, the film has been renamed to the much more placid The Windmill. Jongerius bloody trip to the Netherlands, involves an ancient urban legend. Several morally corrupt holidaymakers are set to interact with the killer in this urban legend, first hand. And, The Windmill relies on a Catholic morality, in which sinners must be punished. This is the Old Testament though, so there is no forgiveness on the horizon, for anyone. Then, characters face a supernatural villain. Everything favours this burned and scarred killer. In his new film, The Windmill, Nick Jongerius transforms one of Holland's picturesque tourist attractions into a hub of blood-soaked horror. With XLrator Media releasing The Windmill on VOD and iTunes this Tuesday, followed by a theatrical release on October 28th, we caught up with Jongerius for our latest Q&A feature.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Nick. When did you first come up with the idea for The Windmill?
Nick Jongerius: My pleasure. Thanks for your interest in the film. I first started thinking about the idea for this film after Frankenstein's Army. Our investors at that time were really interested in Holland, especially Amsterdam—the dikes, windmills, clogs, etc. This triggered me. I thought, "What if we use these famous touristic symbols of Holland and drench them in blood? Sort of turning it upside down. From there we shot a proof of concept,...

As the Frontières Co-Production Market, Brussels Edition, wraps up tonight in Brussels the first co-production deal has been announced. Chris W. Mitchell, writer of Frankenstein's Army and the upcoming horror flick The Windmill Massacre, had a new project at the market and he has found some like-minded folks who want to make it with him. Currently budgeted at €2.5 million, Amsterdam Gothic tells the story of Australian art historian Robin Taylor who comes to Amsterdam to participate in the restauration of the paintings of an obscure 17th century Dutch master, Floris de Witte. However, she soon discovers that she is in terrible danger because the malevolent De Witte has achieved what so many artists strive for: he lives on in his work. Written and to...

The terrible reality of war has provided fertile ground for some fine horror movies over the years. Hellboy was raised by Nazi occultists and Guillermo del Toro conjured up Pan Labyrinth’s from the moral decay of the Spanish Civil War. More recently Dead Snow and Iron Sky have used the Second World War to spawn some truly over the top horrorshows.
With this as our backdrop we come to Frankenstein’s Army from director Richard Raaphorst and writers Chris W. Mitchell and Miguel Tejas-Flores. Premiering at the 2013 Rotterdam International Film Festival the film is coming to the UK on the 30th of September and we’ve got our hands on some of the concept art for the film. The various influences for the artwork should be obvious and like many of horror’s finest directors there is a keen artistic sensibility to the work on show here.

Frankenstein’s Army is the closest thing thus far to a live-action Bioshock adaptation. The second Frightfest feature to resemble a video game – albeit in a positive light – the film forgoes the tiresome trademarks of the found-footage format, its curious lens rendering the entire escapade a thrilling a first-person adventure. We begin among a troupe of Russian soldiers during World War II as they delve deeper from the outskirts of the forest and into a laboratory of mechanical nasties, eventually confronting the mad scientist responsible for their creation. All the while, the camera never skirts from its responsibility as a steadfast explorer.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creativity – and by extension, that of director Richard Raaphorst – is truly something to behold. There’s a huge range of beasts in all shapes and sizes,...

Over the past few years there’s been a real peak in the impact of fan-boy fantasy on cinema, especially horror. We’ve seen some truly nutty visions being realised on the big screen and, for better or worse, that trend shows no signs of stopping. The recent sub-genre of Nazi zombie films is creatively tackled in first time feature director Richard Raaphorst’s endearingly titled, handheld camera shot, B-movie extraordinaire Frankenstein’s Army.
How, may you ask, is a film set during WW2 shot on hand-held camera? By the genius of a specially selected film student chosen to tag along with a Russian platoon to film some propaganda. This surmises the bonkers...

First poster for Richard Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army, starring Karel Roden, Joshua Sasse, Robert Gwily, Alexander Mercury, Luke Newberry, Hon Ping Tang, Andrei Zayats, Mark Stevenson, Cristina Catalina, Jan de Lukowicz and Zdenek Barinka. The film written by Miguel Tejada-Flores and Chris W. Mitchell is certainly super-gory, if you've seen the red band trailer. Still, I'll definitely be catching this one. A mad scientist and an unstoppable army of undead soldiers? Count us in. Catch the poster below the plot. Here's what to expect: In the waning days of World War II, a battalion of Russian soldiers find themselves lost in enemy territory. Stumbling upon a village decimated by an unseen terror, they discover that...

Frankenstein’s Army
Netherlands, 2013
Written by Chris W. Mitchell and Miguel Tejada-Flores
Directed by Richard Raaphorst
I don’t like to insert myself into these reviews, but at this point it’s important that you know something about me: I have a strong stomach, movie-wise. I didn’t even flinch the first time I saw the birthing scene in Alien. I chuckled my way through the original Evil Dead films and laughed at the cannibalistic climax of Ridley Scott’s Hannibal. I say this not to brag, but to lend some weight to the following statement: Richard Raaphorst’s film Frankenstein’s Army is by far the most disgusting film I’ve ever seen.
This is a found-footage horror film, where a filmmaker has been embedded with a Russian Army unit near the end of World War II (Was hand-held camera technology actually this advanced in 1945? Better not to ask...

I'm not sure if it is good or bad that mainstream film festivals segregate horror films to special "Midnight" sections. On the one hand, these special sections are rarely in competition, but on the other hand, it gets them in front of an audience that may not otherwise be exposed to it.
But I digress. The Tribeca Film Festival announced today its Midnight Movies selections, marking a rebranding of the film block from Cinemania. Check out the lineup below:
Dark Touch, directed and written by Marina de Van. (France) – World Premiere, Narrative. Niamh is the lone survivor of a bloody massacre after the furniture and objects in her family’s isolated house take on a monstrous life of their own. The police ignore her wild stories and the family friends and social worker who take her in try to introduce a new life. But in this psychological thriller, Niamh is...
