He grew up listening to classical music; his mother was a pianist. He was fascinated by the rock'n'roll of Chuck Berry and the art-house style of bands like the Velvet Underground. He studied art in Brussels and West Berlin, where he became part of the new Krautrock movement that combined heavy synth with minimalist arrangements.
