He was the captain of the England Soccer team that won the World Cup in
1966.
Charter member of the International Soccer Hall of Fame.
Besides West Ham United, he played for the following clubs: Fulham, San
Antonio Thunder (NASL) and Seattle Sounders (NASL).
In 1966 he became the first footballer to win the BBC Sports
Personality of the Year award.
He was detained for questioning by the Colombian authorities over the false accusation of theft of a £625 diamond and emerald bracelet on the eve of England's opening World Cup clash in 1970.
He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1967 Queen's New Year Honours List for his services to Association Football.
