Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf flick "The Howling" boasts one of the most impressive werewolf transformation scenes in the genre's history. A vicious serial killer named Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) confront's the film's protagonist, Karen (Dee Wallace), an investigative reporter recovering from a previous attack at a woods-bound therapy camp. Lit through the slits in Venetian blinds, Quist's face extends and mutates, his mouth ripping into a terrifying wolf grin, his eyes bulging. Karen witnesses the entire transformation and is, naturally, terrified. Quist was already known for his penchant for murder, but learning that he is a werewolf makes him that much more monstrous. The effects were provided by the amazing Rob Bottin.
"The Howling," while a corker of a monster movie, is also a clever satire of then-modern therapy. A certain kind of "touchy-feely" language had come into vogue in the late '70s and early '80s, and...

Look into the series Criterion Channel have programmed for August and this lineup is revealed as (in scientific terms) quite something. “Hollywood Chinese” proves an especially deep bench, spanning “cinema’s first hundred years to explore the ways in which the Chinese people have been imagined in American feature films” and bringing with it the likes of Cronenberg’s M. Butterfly, Cimino’s Year of the Dragon, Griffith’s Broken Blossoms, and Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet—among 20-or-so others. A three-film Marguerite Duras series brings one of the greatest films ever (India Song) and two lesser-screened experiments; films featuring Yaphet Kotto include Blue Collar, Across 110th Street, and Midnight Run; and lest we ignore a Myrna Loy retro that goes no later than 1949.
Criterion editions include The Asphalt Jungle, Husbands, Rouge, and Sweet Smell of Success; streaming premieres for Loznitsa’s Donbass, Béla Tarr’s watershed Damnation, and...

Given the current popularity of traditional comic book films in cinemas and on television and streaming, it’s perhaps no surprise that there have been several recent, subversive offerings in those mediums which take their core tropes to task, doling out stories which present the normally infallible superhero types as being all too human, with the […]

Claude Gonzalez and Frans Vandenburg have been following the stranger-than-fiction life of filmmaker John Farrow for over 10 years.
Born in 1904 in Marrickville, Sydney, John Farrow’s curious story ranges from fleeing Australia at age 17 to penning a Tahitian French Dictionary, winning an Oscar for co-writing Around the World in 80 Days, to being highly religious and conservative and married to the glamorous Hollywood star Maureen O’Sullivan. Yet on the flip side he obscured his past from his family and fathered an illegitimate son.
As a director, producer, writer and actor he was prolific, making 50 films and working with people like John Wayne, Bette Davis, Ava Gardner, and Lana Turner. He fathered seven children, including Mia Farrow.
Gonzalez and Vandenburg’s documentary – part mystery, biography and film noir – includes interviews with family members in the US and Australia, and with leading filmmakers and critics including Bruce Beresford, Phillip Noyce, Philippe Mora,...

The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

Other branches whose contenders hit double digits included Cinematographers (12), Directors (13), Executives (12), Producers (16), Sound (10) and Visual Effects (10).
But the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch, in which incumbent Kathryn Blondell was ineligible to run again, has only a single candidate, Linda Flowers.

Back in the early 1970s I was crazy about Depression-Era Warner Bros. movies, that weren’t being shown on TV or anywhere else. In that climate of deprivation, a documentary that used movie film clips from the period felt extremely fresh and new. Philippe Mora’s picture sees 1930s America through the movies, through music, and the evasions of official newsreels. Franklin Delano Roosevelt preaches prosperity while James Cagney slugs his way through the decade as a smart-tongued everyman — in a dozen different roles. This was a new kind of documentary info-tainment formula: applying old film footage to new purposes.

Coming off one of its most contentious years in history, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has sent out its list of candidates for its Board of Governors elections late this month.
The Board of Governors directs the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission.
Governors attend 6-8 board meetings annually (in person or by video conference when out of town). Each Governor also serves on one board oversight committee and their branch’s executive committee, and they are expected to represent their branch at numerous Academy events through the year.
Governors have fiduciary responsibilities imposed by state law to serve the Academy’s best interests, by acting with responsibility and care when approving annual goals presented by management, as well as major policies concerning governance.
CEO Dawn Hudson oversees a staff of more than 300 who conduct the Academy’s day-to-day business.

The Howling series has continued to prove popular amongst the horror fans and has spawned seven sequels following the ground-breaking original in 1981. A new book written by Bryn Curt James Hammond, called The Complete History of the Howling, gives a detailed behind the scenes account regarding all eight films and the original book series which inspired them. The book includes new interviews with surviving cast members, never before seen photos and a new unofficial story arc by Nick Stead (Hybrid). Released by Miami Fox Publishing, this is the definitive guide to the most popular werewolf franchise of all time.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

Titling a film is no trivial matter, especially from a marketing perspective. As history has proven, there have been numerous films made which have little more to offer than a cracking title. A really sharp one can help sell the poorest product, conversely a stellar piece of movie-making can be undermined by something uninspired. When you're trying to make your movie stand out in a marketplace awash with alternatives, an attention-grabbing title is a crucial consideration and you'll probably be aiming for something that harbours intrigue, allure, and is capable of fostering curiosity and anticipation. When it was first unleashed theatrically in 1985, Howling II: Stirba – Werewolf Bitch was certainly an attention-grabber. Whether the film itself turned out to be good, bad or indifferent, as enticing titles go the suffix Stirba – Werewolf Bitch sure did the job, sending out a premium come and see me you know you...

The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. As such, to coincide with an impeccably timed release...

Film is considered one of the most important in Israel’s cinematic history.
Following last year’s festival screening of Uri Zohar’s restored Three Days And A Child, Jerusalem Cinematheque and Tel Aviv-based technical facility Realworks Studios have collaborated on Israeli war classic Avanti Popolo (1986), from late director Rafi Bukai.
Marking 30 years since the film’s original release, the digital restoration will be screened for the first time at the Jerusalem Film Festival on July 12, with cast and crew in attendance including the film’s lead actor Salim Dau and Bukai’s widow Mayan.
The dark comedy follows two Egyptian soldiers stranded in the Sinai desert after the Six-Day War — now caught inside the new borders of Israel — who are desperate to return home.
Originally Bukai’s graduate film from Tel Aviv University, the feature version went on to be widely acclaimed, and is still studied in the country’s film schools.

Wednesday January 27, 2016 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the date the United Nations has chosen to commemorate victims of the Holocaust during World War II. Six million Jews were murdered by Germany's Nazi regime, along with 5 million non-Jews who were also murdered. The anniversary, marked each year since 2005, falls on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland by the Russian army in 1945. One million people died there.
Film director, Philippe Mora and music legend Eric Clapton have joined forces to co-produce a very personal film – "Three Days in Auschwitz" – which details life and death in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The official synopsis describes the film as follows:
As a Jew, born the year after the end of World War II, Philippe Mora was a second-generation holocaust survivor who lost eight members of his family at Auschwitz. Unaware for many years about the role his father played in the French Resistance and how his mother had evaded certain death at Auschwitz by one day, Philippe Mora takes us on a personal journey that many holocaust survivors have had to walk to try to come to terms with the scale of inhumanity that the Nazis showed towards the Jews. From Melbourne to Paris and London, Mora traces the people who lived through the horrors of concentration camps and discovers how his own life was very nearly extinct before he was even born.
"Three Days in Auschwitz" is the story of how Mora was eventually driven to visit Auschwitz itself after decades of avoiding this death camp. His message is that while it remains a chapter in our history that must never be forgotten – it should also be remembered that monsters did not carry out Hitler’s instructions for the Final Solution of the Jewish Question, they were ordinary human beings. ‘To ignore this fact’, states Mora, ‘is to allow the next Hitler to arise and commit genocide.’ As well as being a co-producer, Mora’s heartfelt film boasts a score which has been specially composed and performed by Eric Clapton.
The haunting sound of Clapton’s guitar accompanying the train trucks ferrying thousands of Jews into their death on the rail tracks of Auschwitz is unforgettable, according to Mora, who has a long-standing friendship with Clapton that goes back to their days as flatmates around the Kings Road in Chelsea when Mora was a young artist and Clapton about to hit the big time in music. As well as Clapton’s soundtrack, Mora who has directed many films including Communion, Howling II and III, Mad Dog Morgan, has showcased some of his paintings that were inspired by the memories of holocaust survivors and his feelings about the Nazis. ‘Are you a Jew?’ Hitler asks Mickey Mouse in one of Mora’s paintings.
"Three Days in Auschwitz" will be released on DVD and digital by Screenbound Pictures on 9 May 2016, along with special public screenings.

The Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf is more than just a crazy title and a disappointing sequel. Much more. Much, much more. Trust us.
Do you remember the first time you saw Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf?
For me, it was a sunny winter’s day in 2004. I was working at a local grocery store, one that still had a video rental department. As anyone who used to hunt down video nasties knows, these merchants were hotbeds for abandoned VHS treasures like Bad Channels or Retribution.
Even though the Blockbuster down the street had a fantastic offering of faded ‘80s horror gems, they were missing the first - and best - sequel to The Howling. It was weird. They had everything else, even the franchise’s sixth entry. Needless to say, I was kind of perplexed. I knew my life would never be...

The year that gave us Gremlins, Ghostbusters and The Temple Of Doom also gave us these 20 underappreciated movies...
It's been said that 1984 was a vintage year for movies, and looking back, it's easy to see why. The likes of Ghostbusters and Gremlins served up comedy, action and the macabre in equal measure. James Cameron's The Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger's star status and gave us one of the greatest sci-fi action movies of the decade.
This was also the year where the Coen brothers made their screen debut with the stunning thriller Blood Simple, and when the Zucker brothers followed up Airplane! with the equally hilarious Top Secret! And we still haven't even mentioned Beverly Hills Cop, This Is Spinal Tap, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the unexpectedly successful romantic comedy, Splash. Then there was Milos Forman's sumptuous period drama Amadeus, which...

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. For anyone who may have missed two of the best indie films this year in theaters—Ex Machina and It Follows—you’ll have a chance to catch up with both this coming Tuesday.
Scream Factory is also keeping busy this week with their high-def release of Philippe Mora’s cult classic, Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf, and they also have two double feature Blu-rays coming out as well. Severin Films has put together an extensive special edition release of the recent documentary Lost Soul, which follows the troubled production of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau and looks pretty incredible and for all you X-Men fans out there, the Rogue Cut version of Days...

I unabashedly love Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf and, on July 14, the patron saints of classic cult film- Scream Factory- are resurrecting Philippe Mora’s sequel on Blu-ray. In honor of its release, I was fortunate to be able to speak with Mora about his experiences working on the film, collaborating with both Sybil Danning and the legendary Christopher Lee, and how the latter had quite a lifetime of experiences even before he became one of the greatest actors to grace the silver screen.
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me, Philippe- I am a huge fan of Howling II and I even have an original one-sheet hanging in my kitchen.
Philippe Mora: Oh, thank you so much! Let me tell you how that image came about. One day we were filming a scene with Sybil who is supposed to be in...

On the weekend of April 24-25, DVD Drive-In and the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, Pa, hosted the third annual April Ghouls Drive-In Monster-Rama. This springtime festival of 1970s and 1980s exploitation horror-films, now in its third year, is the more recent sister to September’s glorious Drive-In Super Monster-Rama. This latter event, which will enjoy its ninth incarnation this coming autumn, generally features a slate of more “traditional” monster movies from the 1960s and 1970s. Neither weekend of programming should be missed by any horror film devotee with access to an automobile. The intent of the original Drive-In Super Monster-Rama (first presented at the Riverside in 2007) was to authentically re-create the ambiance of the all-night drive-in theater spook shows of the 1960s and 1970s. In this regard, the event succeeds in every possible manner.

The horror landscape was changing by 1982. People were tiring of slashers; even the Halloween franchise decided to take a left (some would say wrong) turn away from Shatner masks and sharpened knives, and used the brand name to explore the holiday itself in the perpetually under-appreciated Season of The Witch. The genre seemed to be turning towards monsters, from large scale dread fests such as John Carpenter's The Thing to more intimate fare like Frank Henenlotter's Basket Case. The horror films of 1982 displayed a refreshing variety of ways to make audiences jump, squirm, gasp, smile, and when the occasion arose, vomit. The Beast Within giddily checks all the boxes.
Released in February by United Artists, the film took in a total of 7.7 million at the box office. Those were not great numbers, and the reviews were worse. Mainstream critics in general have never been kind to horror; almost...

Filmmakers Philippe Mora and Trevor Graham are working on a feature documentary on the Holocaust, which they believe is timely amid the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Europe.
Monsieur Mayonnaise will chronicle the making of Mora.s graphic comic book of the same name, an account of how his Jewish family survived the Holocaust.
Screen Australia.s Signature Fund is contributing $195,000 and the producers are working with the Documentary Australia Foundation to raise $50,000 from philanthropic donations from organisations and individuals.
Dr Graham, who is directing and co-producing with Ned Lander and Lisa Wang, hopes to start shooting in August in Melbourne, Los Angles and Europe with Jenni Meaney as the DoP.
.We will go on the road with Philippe as he explores his family's extraordinary story of survival during the Third Reich, filming in Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, Hollywood, Auschwitz and Melbourne . witnessing the creation of his comic art,. Graham tells If.

Philippe Mora has made so many films, from historical to hysterical. The first time I heard of him was with his film “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” in 1975, which he wrote and directed. Produced by Sandy Lieberman and David Puttnam and edited by Jeremy Thomas, it was already his eighth film. His life story and his family’s life stories are so incredible that they are hard to believe, but you know they are true. Even his great aunt Charlotte Morawski, one of the few women ever to attend university at the time, wrote a dissertation in 1915 in Breslau, Germany on Nietzsche and his relationship with a Jewish woman named Rees. This dissertation was recently brought to Philippe by the widow of the director Sam Fuller…(!)
Philippe is one of the most consistently eclectic directors of the '70s and ‘80s. His work has ranged from the controversial Nazi documentary “Swastika" — banned in Israel and Germany for its use of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun's home movies — to the outlaw biopic "Mad Dog Morgan " starring Dennis Hopper, to superhero spoof "The Return of Captain Invincible" featuring Alan Arkin.
And now, ‘Three Days in Auschwitz -The Film” is a couple days from finishing the campaign on Indiegogo. He says, " We are looking great on the Indiedgogo Flexible Funding option. We are deeply grateful to all who have funded. Those who have not please have a look at this, and if you can, please kick us up a notch!"
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/three-days-in-auschwitz-a-film
Philippe explains the origin of this film:
"My mother Mirka Mora was scheduled to be transported from Paris to Auschwitz via Pithiviers in 1942. She escaped by one day. Many in my family did not escape. I've spent decades wondering why did this catastrophe happen? There are still no definitive answers. In the light of all current knowledge this film asks why once more. This current examination started in Poland in 2010.
The barbaric events in Paris last week underline that violent depravity is still with us. The medieval notions that fuelled Auschwitz are sadly and dangerously still present. Please be kind enough to continue to support the completion of this artistic but factual film, by spreading the link amongst contacts you feel may be sympathetic, and/or interested in the history of racism and bigotry. To those of you who have already contributed, again my heartfelt thanks. Rest assured the film will be completed."

The Oldenburg International Film Festival, an indie fest billed as “Germany's Sundance” will honor Australian cult director Philippe Mora this year with a retrospective of his life's work. One of the most consistently eclectic of the 70s and 80s, Mora's work has ranged form controversial Nazi documentary Swastika – banned in Israel and Germany for its use of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun's home movies – to outlaw-biopic Mad Dog Morgan starring Dennis Hopper to superhero spoof The Return of Captain Invincible featuring Alan Arkin. Mora will attend the 21st Oldenburg festival and will receive the fest's German Independence

Re-Animator, The Beast Within and Camp Dread are among the horror films to appear on DVD and Blu-ray this month. Nick takes a look...
Feature
Wow. Just a month in and this regular post dedicated to the - shall we say - more idiosyncratic, less delicate of movies (or shall we just say “gory horrors and not-quite-b-movies”) has the splendid fortune of getting to review Stuart Gordon’s tongue-in-cheek classic, Re-Animator.
Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

The Beast Within is a strange movie, you spend a lot of the time thinking it’s a strange werewolf film and the rest wondering just what the hell the beast is. The fact is though if you take your time and watch it you realise that the so-called Beast is unique, by listening to the commentary and watching the documentary included in this release you realise that the creature is in fact a cicada. I know, I had to look up what it was too.
The Beast Within starts with newlyweds Eli and Caroline MacCleary (Ronny Cox and Bibi Besch) enjoying their honeymoon until their car breaks down on a cold dark country road.

The trailer for The Beast Within, upon its initial release in 1982, warned that the final 30 minutes were so horrific that viewers might not survive to see the end credits roll. Scream Factory has already released the movie on Blu-ray in the Us, but UK residents who survived a viewing of the grim coming-of-age flick, or those who want to check it out for the first time, will be happy to learn that Arrow Films will soon be releasing The Beast Within in a dual Blu-ray and DVD format in the UK:
“Kill Me, Please Kill Me… Before It’S Too Late
Late one full moonlit night, a woman stands alone on the roadside waiting for her husband to return to their broken-down car. All of a sudden she’s pounced upon, dragged into the dark woods and savaged by a barely-glimpsed assailant. But this is only the beginning of the terror in The Beast Within…...

Philippe Mora, the Australian-u.S. Producer of incredibly Jewish stories which are based on his own family is now showing his film Absolutely Modern on Amazon Instant Video and we think you should tune in. If Sandy Lieberson of Film London says that " Philippe Mora never ceases to surprise, challenge and amuse. He is a one man film industry and satire is his weapon. ” then it’s worth the look.
Philippe is best known in the film world for Brother Can You Spare a Dime (which was produced by Sanford Lieberson and David Puttnam and edited by Jeremy Thomas!) It was a great film, a nostalgic look back at the Great Depression with contemporary archival footage and film clips picturing James Cagney as an American Everyman that Dimension might still have for U.S. Other films he is known for —Mad Dog Morgan (1976),Howling III (1987) and Communion(1989) are just a few on a long, long list of films. Check him out on IMDb or IMDbPro now.
Here are some links to this smart, well reviewed comedy about muses, modernism and the role of sexuality in art as told by the famed art critic Lord Steinway when a football player, 29, confronts Steinway as his long lost son,.
Movie link: Amazon Instant Video
I hope all my film friends don’t ask me to do this, because I am not an advertising agency, but in the case of Philippe (we go back a long way!) I am happy to do this and besides it is a great opportunity to see how modern media can sell using modern technology. Dyi as its best!
And on another note, a documentary film titled Man Made Mora about him is being directed and produced by Alan Goldman and edited by Alex Soler for Blue Plate Productions.
The film is a feature documentary about Artist and Filmmaker Philippe Mora as he takes us on a unique journey into film, art and history, which reveals a tragic family past, but his family's survival and work represents a celebration of life, creativity and art.
Mr. Mora's parents were survivors of the Holocaust and moved to Melbourne, Australia from Paris when he was three years old. In 2010, he was attending a retrospective of his work at the New Horizons Film Festival in Wroclaw. As you probably aware Wroclaw was formerly part of Germany and was known as Breslau prior to the end of World War Two. Before he left for the festival his mother Mirka told him that she remembered his father telling her that his grandfather Max had gotten married there. The archivist said that she would help but needed a couple of days to see what she could find.
Upon his return Philippe was amazed to learn that the archivist had found a lot more than just the marriage certificate. She had unearthed a plethora of Third Reich documents revealing the fate of his great uncle Fritz Morawski, a wealthy businessman and landowner, who had all of his assets and possessions stolen by the Nazis and then, along with his family, he perished in Auschwitz. Mora recently passed the papers over to a lawyer who specializes in these types of claims who stated “this kind of extensive documentation—250 plus items—is extremely unusual because the Nazis destroyed such records.” By searching through the documents Mora has determined that eight of his relatives were murdered at Auschwitz.
Philippe is fascinated by the “banality of evil”, a theme flowing through all of his art and films. Although Mora has made four films about the scourge of Nazism, it is too simplistic to categorize him as a filmmaker obsessed with everything to do with the Third Reich. Mora is constantly turning over the rocks of history searching for answers to his questions. Philippe has examined subjects such as Marilyn Monroe’s mysterious death believing that “many important historical artifacts are just hiding in plain sight.” Why the continual search for answers? Is it because he recently discovered that the Nazis murdered eight of his relatives in Auschwitz, or because his father was an important member of the French resistance? Whatever the reasons, he has a desire to continue to question the past through his art, in an attempt to better understand how history has shaped our current day life. In Man Made Mora we will see Philippe tackle that past directly.
We will document Philippe’s journey back to Poland and Germany to find out what happened to his family and their possessions. The journey will serve as a physical and metaphorical means of structuring the film and will result in an intimate portrayal of the man. The audience will get an account of what happened to his family and witness Philippe sharing his own thoughts about their tragic past.

Wendy Hughes, who has died in Sydney aged 61, will be remembered by her peers as one of the finest actors of her generation.
Hughes won the AFI award for best actress for Careful, He Might Hear You in 1983 and was nominated on six other occasions, for Newsfront, My Brilliant Career, Lonely Hearts, My First Wife, Echoes of Paradise and Boundaries of the Heart.
.She was a brilliant actress who set the standard and was pioneering for her era,. filmmaker Philippe Mora, who was a close friend in the 1980s and early 1990s, told If.
.In my opinion without Wendy there would have been no Judy Davis, no Nicole Kidman and no Cate Blanchett. If timing had been different she would have been a major international star. As it is she leaves a legacy of perfect performances as one of Australia's greatest actresses..

When I was a kid, there were two movies that terrified me as a kid. This wasn’t the creeping dread I felt when I watched Night of the Living Dead or The Twilight Zone. No, this was outright fear, the kind that sends you under the covers, sleeping in a sheen of sweat with the lights on. And maybe it sounds silly but as someone with a highly overactive imagination who lived in the woods, I don’t find it silly at the time. But now when you’re older, you look back and feel stupid about some of the things that terrified you or the film just isn’t that good. The...

Scream Factory, ever busy preserving horror’s cinematic legacy, recently released another pair of cult classics on Blu-ray, The Beast Within and Crawlspace. Today, we have another double review taking a look back at these two often overlooked genre films.
The Beast Within: The Beast Within is the first theatrical screenplay by now genre vet, Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play). It follows a sickly 17-year-old named Michael MacCleary (Paul Clemens), who, as it turns out, has the misfortune of being the offspring of a violent encounter between a murderous swamp beast and his mother (Bibi Besch). And as Michael begins awkwardly transitioning into a man on the eve of his 18th birthday, he’s also forced to deal with the terrifying evil growing inside that he must overcome. Because, if he doesn’t face his true nature, Michael may forever be lost to his swamp beast lurking...
