Even when he’s not trying to be funny, laughter can be the first response that greets William Shatner. Some may think of him as a caricature. What Alexandre O. Philippe’s thoughtful, searching new documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” reveals, without ever being so blunt as to say as much, is that that laughter reveals more about us than about Shatner. About our inability to comprehend someone quite as complex, as defiantly irreducible, as the man who once was Captain Kirk.
Shatner may be pop culture’s greatest master of pontification, and there is no topic on which he doesn’t have thoughts. He’s expressed them before in the 2001 Peter Jaysen documentary “Mind/Meld”; in the 2011 documentary that he himself directed looking back at the legacy of “Star Trek” in its many different incarnations, “The Captains”; and as seen in Philippe’s new film, via poetry readings...

Documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe has tackled a variety of topics over his career, including zombies (Doc of the Dead) and the fickleness of Star Wars fans (The People vs. George Lucas), but it’s his latest project, 78/52, which thoughtfully examines the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, that might be his most ambitious project to date. The documentary, written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, who seems to specialize in nerdtastic documentaries (he also directed The People Vs. George Lucas), will feature appearances by Simon Pegg, George A. Romero, Max Brooks, Greg Nicotero, Charlie Adlard and practically everyone who has made their name in the zombie genre.

Doc of the Dead was announced earlier this year and promises to be a comprehensive tribute to zombie culture. The project is directed by Alexandre O. Philippe (The People vs. George Lucas) and segments have already been filmed with Simon Pegg and George Romero, among others.
The documentary is still in the early stages of filming, but the first trailer has been released and we have it for you to watch. We also have been provided with more information on the project, including a list of horror icons who are set to make an appearance:

Doc of the Dead was announced right before Comic-Con last month and promises to be a comprehensive tribute to zombie culture. The project is directed by Alexandre O. Philippe (The People vs. George Lucas) and he is off to a good start, with Simon Pegg and George Romero having already filmed segments for the documentary.
I recently had a chance to talk with Alexandre and learned more about the approach this documentary will take, additional people who will participate, their plan for an online extension of the project, and more:
There has been plenty of buzz for Doc of the Dead coming out of your recent appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con. Have you been happy with how your approach to the documentary been received?
Alexandre O. Philippe: Yeah, the great thing is that this is filling a void. The sense I’ve been getting from fans of zombie...

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Or not, actually! Cinema Vertige's Alexandre O. Philippe and Robert Muratore recently made the funny and insightful documentary "The People vs. George Lucas" and have now announced their next project. Well, more than announced actually, they even have a trailer for it. It's another documentary, and their subject this time is Paul, the German octopus in the Sea Life Center in Oberhausen who for years predicted the outcomes of soccer matches with a near-infallible success rate. Paul rose to fame during the European Championship of 2008 (even though he had the final wrong), but turned absolutely nuclear during the World Championship of 2010. Octopi don't get very old so he died last October, but in his last summer he...

What happens when two young men let their love of movies, comic books, and all things “geek” take over their lives? They run away from their families, bringing only the most essential DVDs and comics to their secret, highly fortified underground bunker in sunny Southern California, where they start recording podcasts that will change the world.
Are they heroes?
No.
Are they geniuses?
Far from it.
Are they the future of this planet?
I sure hope not.
Simply put… Matt Cohen and Jesse Rivers are “Bagged and Boarded”.
Bagged & Boarded #60: A Brief Respite With The People Vs George Lucas - In which Matt sits down with Alexandre Philippe and Robert Muratore, the filmmakers behind the new feature documentary The People Vs George Lucas, and discuss everything Lucas Related - From the films to the toys to the beard, BandB presents an in-depth conversation about the man we all love to hate.

The love/hate relationship fans of George Lucas’ work have towards the creator himself run deep and are as intense as they are contradictory. Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary, The People Vs. George Lucas, explores the reasons behind these strong emotions.

Swinging in to SXSW This is my first SXSW, which feels odd for me as I’ve worked as a producer in digital media & film for more than a decade, but shoots & life got in the way of coming before. But this year I’ve got a great reason to be here – I’m one of the producers of the innovative feature documentary The People Vs. George Lucas, here with director Alexandre O. Philippe, fellow prods Kerry Roy & Vanessa Philippe and Dop Robert Muratore. I’m based in the UK, so it was a long flight over here, and I knew I was headed to SXSW when the gate I was at for my final leg into Austin was stuffed to the gills with everyone on iPhones and discussing how to juggle the block parties, the panels...

Those of you who only see the Star Wars fans playing dress-up at premieres and conventions are only seeing one half of the story. A whole generation has grown up, but while they still remain loyal they have a few beefs with the man responsible for framing their childhood. Alexandre O. Philippe's documentary, The People vs. George Lucas, takes a look at the fans behind the masks and why they are so angry. Before the film has its world premiere at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival, Alexandre answered a few questions for this loyalist over the years.
Cinematical: What was the straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back moment that inspired the genesis of this project?
Philippe: I first had the idea of making this film approximately five years ago, but it really came to life during the summer of 2007 while we were in Texas working on several other projects with our crew.
