Who will be included for the special “In Memoriam” segment for Sunday night’s Oscars 2021 ceremony? With last year’s Academy Awards happening over 14 months ago, it means an even larger number of film veterans have died. Producers will hopefully be offering a longer remembrance and not leaving out people for the sake of time.
Superstar actor Chadwick Boseman died late last summer and is a nominee as Best Actor for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Previous Oscar winners from acting categories show who will likely be honored include Sean Connery, Olivia de Havilland, Cloris Leachman and Christopher Plummer. Past acting nominees include Hal Holbrook, Ian Holm, Shirley Knight, George Segal, Cicely Tyson, Max von Sydow and Stuart Whitman.

It was a night for the history books. The 92nd Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, Feb. 9, are done and over. And with them, we've got a whole list of history-making moments. And no, we're not just talking about everything South Korean film Parasite pulled off at this year's ceremony. To start, a handful of nominees made history by breaking Guinness World Records just with their nominations. Sound editor Alan Robert Murray, nominated this year for Joker, broke the record for the most nominations for his work with 10 nods in the category. Martin Scorsese's Best Director nod for The Irishman brought his career tally to nine, the most for a living director. And composer...

In a stunning upset, Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy “Parasite” almost swept the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history along the way.
“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Its victories in the international feature film, director and original screenplay categories were also a first for a South Korean movie. The film only lost in two categories: film editing and production design. Taika Waititi nabbed adapted screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit.”
“Parasite” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” — which had led nominations with 11 — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes’ “1917,” James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” for the top prize.

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

The next step in Clint Eastwood’s late season crashing of the awards bubble: a buzzy world premiere at one of the last pre-Oscars fall film festivals. The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced that Eastwood’s fact-based drama “Richard Jewell” will celebrate its world premiere at AFI Fest this November in Los Angeles. The film, made in short order (as has become Eastwood’s signature), debuted its first trailer just last week, announcing its entry into an already-crowded awards season.
“Clint Eastwood is an American icon,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO in an official statement. “It is an honor for AFI to premiere this next chapter in his storied career — one that continues to enrich the nation’s cultural legacy with undeniable impact.” Eastwood himself will be on hand to introduce the new film, starring Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde,...

In this Oscar season’s top contenders for sound editing and mixing, craftspeople personalized their authentic sounds by linking them to characters or dramatic events. What we hear in “First Man,” “A Quiet Place,” “Roma,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Mary Poppins Returns” emanates from the outside world, but also turns inward. It’s heightened reality at its most creative, especially when mixed in Dolby Atmos, which adds greater accuracy and detail.
Since “First Man” is told from the point of view of a grieving Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling), director Damien Chazelle desired both historical accuracy and subjective intensity in the soundscape overseen by his Oscar-winning “La La Land” team. Fortunately, they got the full cooperation of Nasa to depict the Apollo mission to the moon, capturing authentic sounds of spacecraft and Mission Control.

Bradley Cooper had lofty sonic ambitions for his directorial debut, “A Star is Born.” In fact, sound editor Alan Robert Murray reveals that the first-time filmmaker had envisioned “four soundscapes that he wanted to incorporate into the movie” — no pressure. Watch our exclusive video interview with Murray above.
See Sam Elliott (‘A Star Is Born’) on how he reacted when Bradley Cooper stole his voice [Exclusive Video Interview]
In addition to directing, Cooper stars in “Star” as Jackson Maine, a fading musician who helps propel a young singer, Ally (Lady Gaga), to stardom. For the film’s many concert sequences, Cooper and Murray wanted “everybody to feel like you were there.” And they contrasted those with more personal sequences that were “ratcheted down.” On top of that, they needed to convey Jackson’s “struggle with tinnitus” as well as transitions from “his loss of hearing” back to “reality.”

While deep into the standard 7.1 sound mix for “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper was approached about doing a Dolby Atmos mix as well. But he was skeptical. After all, this wasn’t a Marvel superhero movie or a Disney/Pixar animated feature. This movie showcased Cooper performing live, intimate, musical performances with Lady Gaga.
Yet the first-time director and his mixing team experimented with Atmos and came away surprised at the way it isolated the vocals and instruments. Like Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma,” Atmos delivered a more nuanced and authentic soundscape.

“Atmos crept in at the last hour, but we didn’t think it was gonna work and we didn’t think it was necessary,” said Jason Ruder, the supervising music editor. “But we spent a week doing an Atmos delivery.

It might seem like an impossible feat, but with his version of “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper both puts a fresh spin on a decades-old movie staple and transcends its very place in cinema history by fixing the story, turning a classic role, finally, into a tragic figure you actually care about.
For that and many more reasons (like a field that isn’t as competitive as usual), the lead actor Oscar race might be over and done with. Cooper is that good as the kind-hearted but haunted Jackson Maine, and the screenplay — from Cooper, Will Fetters, and Oscar winner Eric Roth — finely tunes his story, serving the character far better than any previous version of the tale has for Fredric March and James Mason’s Norman Maine, or Kris Kristofferson’s John Norman Howard.
That you can get two paragraphs into spelling out the virtues of this film...

Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin are ready to go to war. The first trailer for “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” is here, and the border drug war is more intense than ever.
In the sequel to the 2015 film, CIA operative Matt Graver (Brolin) hires revenge assassin Alejandro Gillick (del Toro) after drug cartels start smuggling terrorists across the U.S.-Mexico border. Their goal? To pit the cartels against each other.
“You’re gonna help us start a war,” Graver tells Alejandro. “With who?” he asks. “Everyone. No rules this time,” Graver replies.

As evidenced by the fact that Donald Trump says he’ll “Probably” be Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, Donald Trump almost certainly won’t be Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. (Also, the fact that chief content officer Alan Murray called it “total Bs.”) Like most communiqués from the tweeter-in-chief, this latest tantrum has inspired mockery from the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jordan Peele, and Ava DuVernay.

Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.

I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

Amy Adams, Finding Dory, Billy Lynn shut out; Nocturnal Animals, Silence fail to impress voters.
There were few major upsets to be found among the 2017 Oscar nominations, which were revealed online via live stream earlier today (Jan 24).
As predicted by many industry commentators, La La Land led the way with 14 nominations – a record-tying figure.
Of the films to underperform, Focus Features may be disappointed to see Tom Ford’s thrilling Nocturnal Animals score only a single nomination.
Michael Shannon’s nod in the supporting actor category over Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins was something of a surprise after the latter received Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Bafta nominations.
Titles to outperform Nocturnal Animals include disaster movie Deepwater Horizon and sci-fi romance Passengers.
In the leading actress category, Amy Adams for Arrival and Annette Bening for 20th Century Women were both overlooked, seemingly missing out to Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins.

Several of this year’s sound contenders explored battles and other action in a retro fashion very different from the usual superhero mayhem. They include the World War II arenas of “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Allied,” as well as the grittier “Star Wars” battles in “Rogue One”; the terrorist bombing of “Patriots Day”; the miracle on the Hudson in “Sully”; and the unique Indian presence of “The Jungle Book.”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
To comply with director Gareth Edwards’ desire for a grittier “Star Wars” movie, sound editors Matthew Wood and Christopher Scarabosio created a new kind of soundscape. “We tried to make it more war-like than a classic ‘Star Wars’ battle,” Scarabosio told IndieWire. “Obviously there are lasers but we were going for impacts that were more realistic, more like you would hear when a bullet hits a tree or some kind of container, and of sand kicking up.

And although flashbacks and flash forwards are often confusing or cliche-ridden, these editors experiment with them in fresh and unpredictable ways. The results not only provide greater character insight but also more adventurous narrative experiences.
“La La Land”
With the bittersweet love story between Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian and Emma Stone’s Mia, Damien Chazelle constructed a musical bridge between the past and the present — La and Hollywood as both dreamland and boulevard of broken dreams. It’s filled with flashbacks, flash forwards and dream sequences, but the challenge for editor Tom Cross (Oscar-winner for “Whiplash”) was giving equal weight to the struggling jazz pianist and aspiring actress. He did so with judicious moments, together and separately in a very musical way, alternating...

Descending from a lineage of Oscar-sound editors—including his Oscar nominated grandfather, Robert G. Henderson, and his father, Oscar winner Alan Robert Murray—editor Blu Murray quickly realized through firsthand experience that sound editing wasn’t for him. Of interest, though, was the craft of picture editing; recognizing that picture and sound editors operate within the same union, Murray put his time into sound work before transitioning over, making his own beginning…...

It's officially Nick Viall's turn to hand out roses as The Bachelor's next leading man.
While Twitter users took sides in the polarizing decision, alumni from the reality dating show were sure to share their two cents on ABC's surprising choice – including Viall's longtime rival, Josh Murray.
