Two days after his 43rd birthday last August, country star Cody Jinks woke up, turned to his wife, and said he was quitting drinking.
“And I haven’t touched a drop since,” Jinks tells Rolling Stone. “I gave it to God. Take it from me. I don’t want it anymore. I’m full. I drank everything. I drank all of it.”
Well-documented for being a little rough around the edges and defensive to those trying in vain to figure him out, Jinks is rather upbeat in conversation these days...

Guitarist Kiko Loureiro left Megadeth for good in late 2023 after an extended leave of absence from the band. But before he departed, Loureiro suggested another ex-Megadeth axeman to take his place: Marty Friedman.
Friedman famously played guitar in Megadeth during the 1990s, contributing his virtuosic guitarwork to two of the band’s most beloved albums, 1990’s Rust in Peace and 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, among other LPs.
The pairing of Dave Mustaine and Friedman pairing stands as one the greatest twin-guitar attacks in heavy metal history, and some fans thought Loureiro’s initial absence from the band — temporary at first (he sat out multiple tours) — was the perfect time to bring Friedman back into the fold.
Apparently, Loureiro had the same idea.
“Actually, I even mentioned to management and Dave that I thought bringing Marty Friedman back would be amazing,” Loureiro told Guitar World in a new interview.

Chicks members Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer (previously Erwin) issued a joint statement on Lynch’s death: “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks. Kiko Loureiro is extending his absence from Megadeth and will remain away from the band during its “heavier touring schedule” in 2024.
The Brazilian guitarist initially sat out the fall leg of Megadeth’s 2023 tour due to “family reasons.” Finnish axeman Teemu Mäntysaari filled in as a replacement and will retain that role for the upcoming tour dates.
Loureiro issued a statement on Instagram regarding his continued absence:
“Dear Megadeth fans, I want to share with you a decision that hasn’t been easy for me.
In September, I had to step away from the U.S. leg of the tour for family reasons. Looking ahead, during 2024, we anticipate an even heavier touring schedule for Megadeth. After thorough reflection and discussions with Dave Mustaine and Megadeth’s management, we have collectively agreed that it is the right move to extend my absence. I’m always looking forward to that magical time of year. As I’ve gotten older things have changed, but the feelings I get have not. What I’m talking about is obviously Halloween. Not even just Halloween, special Halloween programming. For me, it all started with It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, the The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror and then just got better and better.
Anyone remember Snick or Treat? Each year there was some kind of game or call-in number and you could win cool prizes like glow in the dark shirts, video games, VHS tapes of your favorite Nick shows, Pizza Hut gift cards, a TV, a Nickelodeon jean jacket, and I think they...

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine had a a handful of security guards ejected from the band’s show on Wednesday night (September 27th) in Bloomington, Illinois, accusing them of roughing up a fan.
As the band was playing the classic “Symphony of Destruction” toward the end of the set, Mustaine stopped the song to address the guards, shouting, “Dudes, don’t be fucking hitting people. That is totally uncool. Hey, fuckin’ stop hitting that guy.”
The metal legend then ran over to where the skirmish was happening, and pointed out the security guards who were involved in the incident, appearing to scold them, as well.
He then returned to the mic, declaring, “I’m not gonna play anymore until those guys are escorted out of the building, so just hang on a second. That was so fuckin’ unnecessary. That was so fuckin’ unnecessary, you guys. … What’s on the back of your shirt?...

“I have something very special I need to tell you guys… A couple of weeks ago I just bought a house in Italy,” Mustaine said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “So think about that — you wake up tomorrow morning and you see me out your window, and I’m walking with my boxes. If you were to take the smooth vocals of Iron Maiden, the in your face brooding metal and hard partying ways of Black Sabbath with a sprinkle of the epic guitar riffs of Led Zeppelin into a blender, the result may be something close to the band that would redefine the face of music in the early 1980’s. A band that became so massive that in 2013 they became the first musical act to ever perform on every continent when they performed live in Antarctica. A band whose hard partying ways and love of Jägermeister helped usher in the age of the hard partying rock stars. But how do you get to be known as one of the biggest musical acts to ever exist? By putting out consistently great music, that’s how! But do they still rock? Do the cool kids still listen to them? Lets find out Wtf Happened to Metallica?...

Every month we celebrate the new releases on Screambox, but occasionally we randomly sneak new titles onto the streaming service.
This month, we added the excellent documentary, Death by Metal, which celebrates the birth of death metal and late guitarist and vocalist Chuck Schuldiner.
The doc tells the story of the influential American death metal band Death, founded in 1983 by Schuldiner, which produced several masterpieces through Schuldiner’s death in 2001.
Death’s burning speed and ferocity was only matched by Chuck’s unbending determination to bash out the most boundary-crushing interpretation of heavy metal.
Also streaming on Screambox is The Decline of Western Civilization: Part II, which dissects the world of heavy metal through interviews with Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Lemmy Motorhead, Ozzy Osbourne, Bret Michaels, Rikki Rocket, Dave Mustaine, and C.C. Deville; and The Sound of Scars, which tells the story of three...

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has teamed up with Kramer for the new Vanguard artist signature model Flying V electric guitar.
The axe comes in three finishes — Ebony, Silver Metallic, and a limited edition “Rust In Peace” in Alien Tech Green — and is the latest in Mustaine’s line of signature-model guitars for Gibson Brands.
Mustaine recalled playing the guitar — unbeknownst to him at the time — during Megadeth’s recent tour. The new Vanguard held up so well, Mustaine didn’t realize he wasn’t playing his trusty Gibson Flying V.

Megadeth have settled a copyright lawsuit stemming from the artwork for their latest album, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!.
Back in February, New York-based illustrator Brent Elliott White sued the band, claiming that hundreds of hours of work had gone unpaid and that he still owned the copyright to the art featuring Megadeth’s iconic mascot Vic Rattlehead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, both parties filed a joint notice of settlement last Thursday (May 11th), informing the court that they had “reached an agreement in principle for the resolution of this action.” A stipulation of dismissal is expected to be filed within 30 days, and “the matter has been resolved amicably,” per White’s attorney Matthew Cave.
White, who has also created art for Trivium and Death Angel, among others, was initially contacted to work on the Megadeth sleeve in early 2020, but no written contract was signed at that time.

David Ellefson continues to reflect on his removal from Megadeth in interviews, and now he’s taken a direct hit at his former bandmate Dave Mustaine.
After all, Mustaine is familiar with getting unceremoniously booted from a band. He was put on a bus and sent home in April 1983, right before Metallica were set to record their debut album in New York City — arguably the most infamous heavy metal ousting of all-time.
Speaking with Brazil’s Heavy Talk, Ellefson took to comparing his no-questions-asked dismissal from Megadeth to Mustaine’s Metallica saga… or at least their respective reactions to being fired.
“I got one call: ‘You’re fired,'” said Ellefson [as transcribed by Blabbermouth] of the moment he was axed from Megadeth following a compromising online sex encounter that was made public. “And I said, ‘What the fuck, man?’ I said, ‘Some shitty fucking people just dropped a bomb on my house. With each subsequent interview, ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson opens up a little bit more about his unceremonious removal from the band in 2021 following a highly publicized online sexual encounter.
Speaking with Spanish site The Metal Circus, Ellefson let it all out in a tell-all interview that hit on his exit from Megadeth, the aforementioned sexual incident, and Ellefson’s current musical endeavors — which even includes playing Megadeth covers in his Kings of Thrash project.
Ellefson said he didn’t choose to leave Megadeth and is “clearly not mad about the past.” He still considers himself an “ambassador” for the group due to his lengthy history as its bassist.
“I think I’m being very respectful toward it despite how my dismissal was handled,” he said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “I think I’ve gone above and beyond being respectful.”

Metallica have bought their own vinyl pressing plant.
The band has acquired the majority interest in Furnace Record Pressing in Alexandria, Virginia. This comes after Metallica pressed over 900,000 pieces of vinyl in 2022, mostly at Furnace.
The pressing plant has been vital to the band’s catalog remaining in print over the past few years and especially during the pandemic, when supply chain issues created delays and backlogged pressings for most artists. Since 2014, Furnace has pressed over 5 million pieces of wax for Metallica, including collections such as the massive “Black Album” 30th anniversary box set.
“We couldn’t be more happy to take our partnership with Furnace … to the next level,” said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich in a statement. “Their indie spirit, the passion they have for their craft… culturally we’re kindred souls.”
Added frontman James Hetfield: “[Furnace has been] great to Metallica and more importantly to our fans … [who] will have continued...

“We couldn’t be more happy to take our partnership with Furnace … to the next level,” said Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich in a statement. “Their indie spirit, the passion they have for their craft… culturally we’re kindred souls.”

Metallica have shared the new song “If Darkness Had a Son” — the third single from their upcoming album 72 Seasons, out April 14th.
The legendary metal band teased the track on TikTok earlier this week, prompting fans to perform a duet with the music as each member of Metallica added their respective part in a string of TikToks. It was later revealed the track, titled “If Darkness Had a Son,” would be released in full today (March 1st).
Now, the full seven-minute studio track is out (listen below), kicking off with military-style drums from Lars Ulrich and featuring a chugging guitar riff. James Hetfield’s vocals don’t kick in until a minute-and-a-half into the song, as he repeats the lyric “Temptation” multiple times.
Overall, Metallica steer this one into a more mid-tempo alternative metal direction as opposed to the direct thrash of previous singles “Lux Æterna,” and “Screaming Suicide.” Hetfield maintains a melodic,...

Marty Friedman contributed to a number of Megadeth’s all-time classic albums, most notably 1990’s Rust in Peace and 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, but had not shared the stage alongside Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine since his exit from the band in 2000. But that all changed on Monday, February 27th, when the guitar virtuoso reunited with Megadeth for three songs during their headlining performance at Tokyo’s legendary Budokan Arena.
“It was just like a perfect exclamation point on everything that we had done together up until this point,” Friedman told Heavy Consequence a day after the show. “You couldn’t have written a better way for the whole thing to play out. It was just perfect timing, just a very natural and organic way to do it.”
Friedman has resided in Japan for the better part of two decades, and both the timing and location of the gig were more than ideal.

Metallica have taken to TikTok to tease what appears to be another new track off their upcoming album, 72 Seasons. An accompanying caption encourages fans to duet with the clip.
The 80-second instrumental has thus far been rolled out in three videos via the band’s TikTok channel, with each member essentially duetting with the previous clip. The first one features just Lars Ulrich playing drums, the next adds bassist Robert Trujillo, and the most recent one adds frontman James Hetfield. It can be assumed that Kirk Hammett’s contribution to the track will be posted on Tuesday.
The tune offers a chugging riff accompanied by military-like drumming. If this new piece of music does turn out to be a new song from 72 Seasons, it would follow previous singles “Lux Æterna” and “Screaming Suicide.”
With the caption “Duet this,” fans have already offered up some fun (and funny) accompaniments to the song.

Megadeth were joined onstage by former lead guitarist Marty Friedman for the first time in 23 years during the band’s February 27th concert at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.
Tens songs into the set, a video montage played showing footage of Friedman, before frontman Dave Mustaine introduced his former bandmate to the stage during the opening to “Countdown to Extinction”: “Ladies and gentleman, please welcome my good friend and lead guitar player, Marty Friedman.”
Mustaine, Friedman, and current lead player Kiko Loureiro then formed a triple-axe attack, barreling through Friedman-era staples “Countdown to Extinction,” “Tornado of Souls,” and “Symphony of Destruction.” As if no time had passed, Friedman was a seamless fit in Megadeth’s current lineup, unleashing the many riffs and solos he originally wrote for those songs.
A particularly poignant moment occurred during the extended instrumental section of “Tornado of Souls” — often considered Friedman’s finest achievement with Megadeth.

Dave Mustaine has once again opened up about the tempestuous relationship between himself and his former bandmates in Metallica.
The long-running feud between Mustaine and Metallica has been documented ad nauseam. In 1983, Metallica fired Mustaine, who went on to form Megadeth. Metallica would end up being the more commercially successful act, and Mustaine would harbor a bitterness over his unceremonious ousting after helping launch Metallica and penning their earliest songs — including much of their debut album Kill ‘Em All.
Over the years, concessions have been made to reconcile things, i.e. Mustaine appearing in Some Kind of Monster and Megadeth and Metallica joining forces for a series of “Big 4” shows with Slayer and Anthrax. But salty remarks from Mustaine in a new interview with Guitar World indicate that he’s still indignant.
“I wanted things to be reconciled and to be friends,” Mustaine said. “But for whatever reason, they didn’t.

Megadeth will welcome back their former guitarist Marty Friedman for a special February 27th show at the famous Budokan Arena in Tokyo that will be live-streamed worldwide. It will mark the legendary thrash metal band’s first performance with Friedman in 23 years.
After exiting Megadeth in 2000, Friedman moved to Japan a couple years later, where he has continued to record music and has become a television personality. During his decade-long stint in Megadeth, the guitar virtuoso played on classic albums Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, among others.

Bob Nalbandian, whose journalism and film career chronicled the ups and downs of the heavy metal scene in print, film and online, died Friday, December 30 in Redding, California at age 58.
Nalbandian was recently diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, an aggressive, rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to a cousin.
Nalbandian began his career in his teen years as the publisher/editor in chief of the heavy metal fanzine The Headbanger in April of 1982. The ‘zine achieved national distribution and was among the first publications to profile the then-unsigned bands Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Armored Saint.
He became a regular contributor to music magazines covering the rising metal scene in California, then parlayed that into a stint working in publicity and promotion for Roadrunner Records, where he handled the efforts backing Sepultura and Type O Negative. He moved on from there to the Rhino/Wea distributed Bizarre/Straight Records.

After nearly 40 years of thrashing, Megadeth show no signs of slowing down with their new speed-metal single “Soldier On!,” the latest track off the heavy metal band’s upcoming LP The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead!
Dave Mustaine said of the new track in a statement, “Coming to the realization that you need to walk away from a relationship that’s very toxic, and how hard it can be to start down that road. But you know you need to, and just taking that first step is the hardest part.

When Dave Mustaine looks back on making Countdown to Extinction, the 1992 album that propelled Megadeth into the mainstream, he’s thankful for his clarity of mind at the time. After years of alcohol and drug abuse, the eternally redheaded singer, guitarist, and songwriter had gotten sober before the making of the group’s previous album — the 1990 thrash masterpiece Rust in Peace — and that new state led to him exploring more of a simplified and streamlined approach to speed metal on Countdown singles like “Symphony of Destruction” and “Sweating Bullets.”
