Is this now an age of TV caution? A brace of big swings at this week’s London TV Screenings belie that trend, and few come bigger than the English-language action thriller “Paris Has Fallen,” which Studiocanal launches at this week’s London TV Screenings.
Like other major Ltvs plays, it takes a mainstream genre – such as, elsewhere, the historical drama (“Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light”), true crime (“A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story”) and the bio – and aims to elevate them to another level.
This is Studiocanal’s biggest TV production of 2024. “‘Paris Has Fallen’ has ambition, scale and production values that I haven’t see in so many series,” says Anne Chérel, EVP global sales and distribution at Studiocanal.
Such scale comes with its backers. Produced by London-based Studiocanal production company Urban Myth Films (“War of the Worlds”), Studiocanal and Millennium and Butler’s G-Base,...

The “Has Fallen” movies are one of the most exciting and action-packed franchises in recent years. Starring Gerard Butler (Mike Banning) as a Secret Service agent, the film follows Banning as he races to counter various terrorist plots.
The “Fallen” Series started with “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013, and then two more sequels followed, “London Has Fallen” in 2016 and “Angel Has Fallen” in 2019.
The “Has Fallen” series is one of the top-ranked franchises in Hollywood, and it features some of the industry’s best actors: Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman. There are currently three movies in the franchise, but there are plans to produce more films under the same title.
The series is commonly known as “Fallen” or “Has Fallen” movies because of the names of the three films.

A hit Swedish thriller series Snabba Cash —also known as Easy Money —is to get a new lease of life as a Netflix original series.
The story of a young man drawn into the world of crime and "easy money" —based on the novels by bestselling author Jens Lapidus —was turned into a trilogy of hit films. The first Snabba Cash movie, directed by Daniel Epsinosa in 2010, launched the international career of star Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Suicide Squad). Kinnaman returned for two Snabba Cash sequels in 2012 and 2013, directed by Babak Najafi and Jens Jonsson, respectively....

Some movies should never be graced with a sequel. Inexcusable in almost every way, Antione Fuqua’s 2013 action-thriller “Olympus Has Fallen” is one of them (read our review here). Sadly, Babak Najafi’s equally crummy “London Has Fallen” tread on its heels 3 years later (read our review here). And it seems the end isn’t quite nigh for the series. Following a similar recess, Ric Roman Waugh now sees fit to craft a full-blown trilogy with a script by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt.

Sf Studios — the Swedish major that’s turning 100 this year — is banking on the production of high-concept, talent driven English-language and local films, as well as TV series, to become a key European player and thrive in today’s ultra-competitive landscape increasingly dominated by deep-pocketed Ott services.
Once the home of Ingmar Bergman, Sf Studios has in recent years shifted its core model from being almost fully dedicated to distribution to becoming a prolific producer of premium films and TV shows aimed at the international market.
“Our goal is to be the leading studio in the Nordics and a leading studio in Europe, which means that across both TV and film we develop, finance, produce, distribute film in the Nordics and manage international sales,” says Sf Studios’ CEO Michael Porseryd, who’s been spearheading the strategic shift.

ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.
The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).
The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

The ReFrame coalition of industry leaders and IMDBPro have unveiled 20 movies certified as gender-balanced productions among the top 100 box office films released in 2018.
The list includes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” Paramount Pictures’ “Bumblebee,” Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “The Favourite,” Stx’s “I Feel Pretty,” Lionsgate’s “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Fox’s “The Hate U Give,” and Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians.”
ReFrame, founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, launched the data initiative last June in an effort to recognize and promote gender-balanced films and television shows. It said Wednesday that the increase in recipients of the ReFrame Stamp from 12 in 2017 to 20 stemmed from gains in the roles of department heads and women-of-color leads and co-leads. Still, the report noted that there remained shortfalls in several key areas.

Billed as akin to the classic Blaxploitation films of the 70s, I was Really looking forward to seeing Proud Mary, however that excitement was tempered somewhat by the delay in between the Us release and the film finally debuting in the UK… That’s usually not a good sign.

The first trailer for Proud Mary hit the internet in July of 2017. After that came a few badass 70s-style James Bond-like posters with star Taraji P. Henson in shadows, gun drawn. It was hard not to get excited for what appeared to be a stylized assassin flick in the vein of John Wick with a bona fide bankable black woman in the lead, Tina Turner’s emotional adaptation of John Fogarty’s anthem rocking in the background. But then the release date hit with a January bow. Critics were told it wouldn’t screen for them even in the big cities. And Thursday night shows were canceled despite ticket buyers arriving with excitement. It’s one thing to block out press, but a whole other to do so to the public.

Taraji P. Henson is such a firecracker she almost makes you believe Proud Mary might have been a decent crime flick – if she fired the asses of the clueless dudes who wrote and directed it and took on those jobs herself. Surely, the Oscar-nominated actress (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), the one who lights up the screen in Hidden Figures and as Cookie Lyon on TV's Empire, could have just done an improvisation on this premise and come up with something livelier than this dipshit drivel. As the film's executive producer,...

A dreary mess of missed opportunities, “Proud Mary” isn’t quite as bad as some of the other glorified direct-to-video dreck that’s slipped onto screens in recent months (shout out to the likes of “Marauders” and “Collide”), but it’s nevertheless significantly more disappointing. This should have been a sure thing, especially at a time that feels ripe for a modified revival of blaxploitation cinema; to paraphrase Jean-Luc Godard: “All you need to make a movie is Taraji P. Henson with a gun and a good reason to use it.”
Throw in a soundtrack that can keep up with the “Empire” star’s natural swagger and you’re really cooking with gas. How the hell do you mess that up? How do you start with “‘Foxy Brown’ meets ‘John Wick’” and end up with a bargain bin action vehicle that will bore fans of either and frustrate fans of both?...

Ric Roman Waugh, directed the Dwayne Johnson-starrer Snitch, has signed on to direct the Olympus Has Fallen sequel.
The Hollywood Reporter reports Gerard Butler will reprise his role in Millennium Films' Angel Has Fallen, the third installment following the action flicks Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. Butler normally plays the Secret Service agent who has kept American presidents safe, but this time around, he's the target.
Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, who created the Olympus has Fallen franchise, are writing the script for this third installment. This follows Antoine Fuqua's 2013 film Olympus Has Fallen, which earned $161 million worldwide. Babak Najafi's London Has Fallen, released earlier this year, grossed $195 million globally.
No more casting details or release date yet. I'm excited to see what happens in this third installment, the previous two movies were, afterall, pretty entertaining.

Okay, if you are a Taraji P. Henson fan, then you are really going to love her latest movie thriller. The title of the film is Proud Mary, but that title does not do the film justice. The film is directed by Babak Najafi. First of all, allow me to quickly set the stage for you. Empire and Hidden Figures Taraji P. Henson has taken Cookie’s feisty to a whole new level as she dons her black leather and takes up a gun to turn slick hit woman in the trailer for Proud Mary.
The all new female lead action film is directed by London has Fallen’s Babak Najafi from a screenplay by John Stuart Newman & Christian Swegal and Steven Antin, based on a story by Newman & Swegal. Producers are Paul Schiff and Tai Duncan.

The music choice is beyond on the nose, but fans of blaxploitation goddesses like Pam Grier and Tamara Dobson will still find something to get excited about in the trailer for Proud Mary. Starring the inimitable Taraji P. Henson as Mary, a deadly hitwoman in a blonde wig and head-to-toe black leather ensemble, the film is an unabashed ’70s throwback—or early ’80s, in the case of the Gloria-inspired storyline about a young boy who, in the words of the film’s official description, “completely turn[s Mary’s life] around” when they cross paths after a hit gone bad.
London Has Fallen’s Babak Najafi directs, which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in the film. But frankly, we’d watch Henson in just about anything, especially if gunplay and ultra-cool ’70s style are involved. Proud Mary co-stars Danny Glover and is set to hit theaters on January 12 ...

"You a cop?" "Not exactly." Screen Gems has unveiled the first official trailer for a film titled Proud Mary, starring the always awesome Taraji P. Henson as an assassin. This is slated for release in early January, which is never a good sign, but I'm hopeful for something entertaining. We don't know much about this, except that Henson meets a young boy on a hit gone wrong and she decides to watch over him. The full cast includes Neal McDonough, Danny Glover, Xander Berkeley, Billy Brown, Margaret Avery, Jahi Di'Allo Winston, and Owen Burke. This is a very fun, clever trailer, without much dialogue in it (yet), relying entirely on the music, visuals, and some kick ass action. Damn! I'm looking forward to this already. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Babak Najafi's Proud Mary, originally from Buzzfeed: In the film, Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson is Mary,...

Set to the tune of — what else? — “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner (her solo version, sans Ike), the trailer has Henson suiting up in leather and heels, with a visit to a secret weapons closet that could make James Bond envious — all for what seems to be an…...

Action movies are not usually star vehicles for Hollywood actresses. Charlize Theron in “Atomic Blonde,” Angelina Jolie in “Salt” and Scarlett Johansson in “Lucy” are anomalies when they should be the standard, but Hollywood is slowly coming around to this fact. Case in point: “Proud Mary.” Never in a million years would the old Hollywood guard let the amazing Taraji P. Henson lead an action vehicle as a butt-kicking assassin, but it’s 2017 and we’re more than ready for this.

As we head into the thick of awards season, it’s time to celebrate all the incredible films that 2016 brought us. La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Deadpool and Arrival will no doubt find themselves on the lips of many moviegoers over the next few weeks, while talent like Amy Adams, Casey Affleck, Emma Stone, Adam Driver and Denzel Washington, among others, will also start picking up some serious buzz.
But, as the best of the best start to take up most of the spotlight, there’s another another awards ceremony gearing up to get underway, and it’ll be celebrating very different types of movies and actors/actresses. We are, of course, referring to the Razzie Awards, which shine a light on the worst that the year had to offer. From the biggest losers to performances that were so dull you couldn’t stand to watch them,...

Gerard Butler’s Mike Banning is falsely-accused and on the run in the explosive Olympus threequel, Angel Has Fallen.
Angel Has Fallen will continue to prove that Gerard Butler's Secret Service agent, Mike Banning, officially has the worst luck ever when it comes to his security details. Seriously, how many calamities can one bodyguard stop?
Interestingly, the film franchise launched with 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen, would fall short in its sequel, 2016’s London Has Fallen, (critically at least - it still did a fair amount of cash at the box office). However, like its protagonist, Banning, the franchise keeps kicking, still bearing the “Fallen" branding. The threequel will see another director turnover, this time placed in the hands of Ric Roman Waugh.

First there was Olympus Has Fallen. Then? London Has Fallen. Next? Angel Has Fallen...
Gerard Butler just keeps on coming. Notwithstanding the fact that this year’s Olympus Has Fallen sequel, London Has Fallen, fell way short of the original (critically at least - it still did a fair amount of cash at the box office), wheels are in motion on a third film in the series.
Butler is set to return to play Secret Service agent Mike Banning, and this time, the title of the film is Angel Has Fallen. That suggests that the target of the terrorist attacks in the film this time will be the President’s plane, Air Force One (Angel being its codename). And that also suggests that it’s long past time we dug out our Blu-ray of Air Force One. We shall get onto that pronto.

I haven't had a chance to see London Has Fallen yet, but I heard it wasn't nearly as good as Olympus Has Fallen, a legitimately enjoyable action thriller that features brutal, over-the-top violence and some truly ridiculous sequences. (I greatly preferred Olympus to that year's other "Die Hard in the White House" movie, White House Down.) But even though it may not be as well-reviewed as the original, London Has Fallen ended up making more money in the long run, and you know what that means: sequel time!
Deadline reports that original writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt and actor Gerard Butler are all returning for Angel Has Fallen, a third film in the franchise.
Butler will be back to star as Secret Service agent Mike Banning, who has spent his career keeping American presidents safe. This time, he’s the target. If his attackers can take down half of Washington D.

The devastated British capital goes into lockdown. Banning will stop at nothing to secure Asher’s safe return home. In 2013, Antoine Fuqua brought us Olympus Has Fallen, a fun, brutal 80’s throwback actioneer that at times felt like a dry run for his next project, The Equalizer. Fast forward three years, and we’re met with London Has Fallen, with Swedish director Babak Najafi (making his English language debut here) brought in to sub for Fuqua. In true sequel fashion, Najafi embraces the ‘bigger, more explosions’ approach as the action leaves the relatively tight quarters of the White House, and lets Gerard Butler’s Secret Service agent Mike Banning run around a destroyed London taking on terrorists who have struck at the funeral of the British Prime Minister, killing all of the world leaders, save U.S. President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart), who Banning must now ferry out British capital alive. Reading the above synopsis, you know exactly what you are in for with London Has Fallen. It’s a generic,...

All right action fans, you won’t have to wait for Spring and Summer for a noisy, big body-count, big-screen bonanza. That’s because “Mr. Movie Mayhem” is back, yup Gerard Butler. Wait a minute, back? He was here just last week, starring in the CGI-heavy, fight-fest Gods Of Egypt! Well, in that one, he’s not truly the star, but a (gasp!) villain! His Set is almost an inverse of his big break-out role in 300 (ten years old now?) and Gods is a kind of a mash-up of the Spartan epic with the (unnecessary) remake of Clash Of The Titans. But it’s not really a sequel and it’s a near-bloodless PG-13. Not the case here. Just three years ago Butler scored again with the bloody and bombastic (almost a non-puppet companion to Team America: World Police) Olympus Has Fallen. This is not to be confused with that...

The most notable thing I can remember about Olympus Has Fallen is how it establishes that the White House windows have been primed to explode if anyone tries to break through them, but then utterly neglects to toss any bad guys through any windows. This is a capital offense for any action movie. Astonishingly, the new sequel, London Has Fallen, tries even less, and on every conceivable level. Its running time is shorter. The special effects are worse than I thought modern studio filmmaking allowed for. Actors such as Robert Forster and Melissa Leo reprise their roles from the first film with maybe half-a-dozen lines apiece. Were it not for the presence of said actors, this could easily pass for a Dtv spin-off.

After an unconventional start into acting (he was fired as a lawyer in Edinburgh due to his partying antics and moved to London), Gerard Butler has appeared in rom-coms, animations and even musicals, but the Scottish actor has emerged as an unashamed Hollywood bad-ass in some of the most iconic action films of recent times.
From an early role starring alongside James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) to returning as one-man-army Mike Banning in London Has Fallen (in cinemas March 3), there is no end to the tough-guy roles that Butler can impress in.
The sequel to the worldwide smash hit Olympus Has Fallen sees Butler in his latest action-packed role, as the relentless bodyguard to the Us president, Mike Banning. Upon the discovery of a plot to assassinate the world leaders attending the Prime Minister’s funeral, he makes it his mission to stand firm against the relentless violence that awaits him.

You can say this much for London Has Fallen: it’s exactly the sequel one would expect to Olympus Has Fallen, the White House takeover actioner in which impossibly effective Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) at one point literally beats a North Korean enemy to death with a bust of Abraham Lincoln. Yeah, remember that?
Like its predecessor, the new pic is jingoistic propaganda for the post-9/11 era, an ugly cocktail of mind-numbing action and miasmic xenophobia that serves no purpose other than to entertain domestic audiences by touting American greatness and fanning the flames of (this time) anti-Middle Eastern sentiment. Also like its predecessor, but perhaps more noticeably in the aftermath of shattering terrorist attacks in Paris and Beirut as well as the troubling rise of Isis, it has absolutely no good reason to exist.
