The 1960s had Beatlemania, but the 1980s had the Freddy frenzy. In the decade when many teenagers wanted their MTV, the bladed boogeyman from Springwood slashed his way out of the big screen to bring his sinister sounds and killer style to the music scene, with a collection of his greatest hits coming back from the dead this week courtesy of Mondo and Strange Disc.
Initially released in 1987, Freddy's Greatest Hits features the voice of Robert Englund accompanied by the talented musicians known as The Elm Street Group. This Wednesday at 12:00pm Ct, Mondo will unleash a special striped vinyl variant of the nine-track collection from Strange Disc. Priced at $25 and limited to 400 copies, the special vinyl release is slated to ship out in January, giving horror fans something to listen to as they drift off to sleep in the post-holiday weeks...

Leatherface (not to be confused with This one) is the eagerly-awaited, nerve-shattering prequel to the legendary The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, exploring the chilling origin of the fearsome horror icon, from the directors of the extreme French masterpiece Inside. The duo – Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury – are a perfect fit for the material, having helmed the eerily similar Among the Living. Thought the end result is not as good as one would expect… Just check out our Leatherface review
A young nurse is kidnapped by four violent teens after they escape from a psychiatric hospital, and take her on a road trip to hell. Pursued by an equally deranged, trigger-happy lawman out for revenge, one of these teens is destined for tragedy and horrors that will destroy his mind – moulding him into the monster we now know as Leatherface.

Some of the most memorable characters in movie history are antagonists. Here are our picks for the franchises that have make the biggest impression based on their villains alone.
A great antagonist in a film can make the effort of the protagonist seem more important. The hero’s plight becomes elevated to have meaning beyond just simple entertainment. It is those struggles that define some of the best movies ever made, and give the audience something to really cheer about.
It’s challenging enough to make one good antagonist, but what happens when you need to make a sequel? What happens if your antagonist has died but your protagonist needs more adventures to keep them busy or complete their story? Maintaining quality villains in a movie franchise is not easy to do. Some movie franchises have had better success at maintaining great antagonists, to the point of often being more...

With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

Wednesday marked the release of the new Puppet Master series from Action Lab Entertainment. Puppet Master is based on the horror film series of the same name from Charles Band and production studio Full Moon Entertainment. Band’s film and Action Lab’s series focus on a group of puppets created by the mysterious Toulon and brought to life with an ancient Egyptian spell. Action Lab’s release marks the first Puppet Master comic since Eternity Comics’ mini-series in 1990. The new series is helmed by Action Lab founding member Shawn Gabborin, who you may remember from my earlier reviews of Snowed In and Victor Season.
I had an opportunity to talk with writer Shawn Gabborin this weekend at the fourth of his book signings. Gabborin was seated at a table inside New Dimension Comics when I walked in. After we shook hands and introduced ourselves, my first question for him was obvious.

What sets one horror franchise apart from another, and how do they evolve over time? As Rec 4 lands on disc, we take a look...
The first instalment in any long running horror franchise is, generally, the one people reckon is the best. And in a lot of cases, they might be right. But as franchises get longer and start clocking up four or more movies in the same universe, things tend to change.
It might be that producers have taken note of popular actors or elements in previous films and want to expand on them; it might be that years have passed and tastes have changed; or it might be that new directors want to put their stamp on a story, but either way, the fifth or sixth movie in a series is usually pretty different from the first one. And the thing that a franchise becomes known for might...

The slasher movie, if we'll admit it to ourselves, is about our fears of teen sexuality. Whether you're a teen made nervous by your own hormones or a parent afraid of what trouble those hormones will get your kid into, the slasher-movie villain is your fears made flesh. But with the release 30 years ago this week (November 9, 1984) of Wes Craven's "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the slasher film entered a new dimension.
With the creation of Freddy Krueger (played indelibly by Robert Englund), who could kill teens in their dreams, the slasher villain proved there was no place that was safe, not even the subconscious.
In retrospect, the genre may have peaked with the release of this film; after all, how many other slasher villains since have been anywhere near as memorable? Unlike his predecessors, Jason Voorhees (of the "Friday the 13th" movies) and Michael Myers (of the "Halloween...

There may be no other genre of film that juggles trends as often and openly as horror. One decade it’s the slasher; one decade it’s the ghost story; the next it’s found footage. The door does and will continue to revolve. That’s not going to change.
Fortunately for fans of this diabolical branch of celluloid, every now and then those shifts come on the heels of a landscape-altering production or the birth of a franchise destined to change the way we view film. We’ve seen movies evolve so much in the last 80-plus years it’s insane.
It’s almost hard to grasp, but it happens. And it often takes career-defining projects and game-changing films to make the shift a reality. Here are 15 horror franchises that enhanced or completely altered the face of horror as we know it.

Have you ever wondered what Jet, Wolf, and the rest of ITV's Gladiators did after the show finished? Wonder no more...
ITV’s Gladiators - the show that for eight years made children everywhere become interested in sports, eating well and keeping fit... for about five minutes on a Saturday night, then we all went back to our natural state of sitting on the settee eating sugar straight from the packet.
What was it that inspired this minor surge of enthusiasm for being buff? That would be the gladiators themselves. Every week, twelve superhuman powerhouses - six men and six women - would intimidate, bully, and otherwise humiliate whichever puny contestants stepped up to try their luck, beating or hindering them in a series of physical skill games. This took place before the big finale – where the contenders would race each other up a downwards escalator, while the gladiators were...

With shows like The Walking Dead and American Horror Story scooping up high ratings and accolades like they’re going out of style, there’s no doubt that horror is dominating TV right now. It’s even becoming a big time trend to turn popular horror movies into their own series’, with spin-offs of Psycho and Silence of the Lambs already moving into their second seasons and others based on The Shining, Scream, The Exorcist and From Dusk Till Dawn currently in the works.
That said, the road to success hasn’t always been an easy one, when it comes to TV adaptations of beloved horror flicks. Over the years we’ve seen many of them come and go, either failing to catch on with audiences the way shows like Bates Motel and Hannibal have or even failing to ever find their way in front of the cameras.

Los Angeles, Sep 23: Tattoo artist Freddy Negrete, who gave singer Harry Styles his first tattoo, says the teen sensation does not visit him regularly anymore.
Negrete says he is clueless about where the 19-year-old had got his new tattoos from.
"Harry said he would be back. I did his first tattoo and a lot of them since, until the big one when he was here with Taylor Swift last year," dailystar.co.uk quoted Negrete as saying
"I don't know why he's gone somewhere else now. I didn't do the rose. He didn't even get it here at the parlour. I don't know who did it," he added.
Styles has as many as 44 tattoos.

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

Is One Direction going from boy band to man band? They may be if Harry has anything to say about it.
After recently showing off his tattoos in Barcelona, Harry Styles is working hard to shed his boyish look by planning to get more tattoos and really bulk up!
Harry Styles: Desperate To Stop Looking ‘Boyish’
Apparently being wanted by pretty much every girl isn’t enough for 19-year-old Harry! An insider close to Harry revealed to Heat magazine that he’s making some changes.
“He’s doing extra weight training and fitness as he’s desperate to stop looking ‘boyish’ and become more manly,” the source said. “He’s been concentrating on weight training to bulk up and increase body strength.”
We thought Harry already looked great, but apparently he doesn’t think so! His One Direction band mates don’t approve of his new workout methods, either!

Los Angeles, May 29: Harry Styles of the English-Irish band One Direction is planning to cover his entire back with a giant tattoo.
The singer is determined to get it done from his favourite tattoo artist Freddy Negrete the next time he is in Los Angeles.
"He just can't seem to stop tattooing at the moment, but he's getting worried they're all too front-heavy so it's definitely his back we'll be concentrating on," dailystar.co.uk quoted Freddy as saying.
He added: "The whole thing could take months. Harry will probably have more Hebrew lettering. He already has his sister's name in Hebrew on his arm and he loves it.

"Tattoos used to be a sign of rebellion; now they're just a sign that you went to the mall," says a smarmy reporter in a news clip that is woven into the documentary Tattoo Nation. That flippant dismissal is turned on its head as director Eric Schwartz tracks the origins and evolution of Black and Gray, the style of tattoo art born in Southern California when prison culture and Latino street culture pollinated one another. Illustrated over the course of 90 minutes is a multi-layered art form that, for those who get tattooed and those who wield the ink apparatus, is part spiritual statement, part artful expression, and far more than a mall-rat trend. In another, Taylor, 23, clings on to the British boy bander and smiles coyly.
