- Graduated from University of Missouri, then attended UCLA Law.
- Began writing in 1945, while recovering in the Naval Hospital in San Diego from tuberculosis, which he contracted in the South Pacific while serving in the U.S. Marines.
- While in the Marines, he sold his first screenplay, "The Silver Bandit," to King Bros. Productions.
- Taught writing courses at a number of universities, including UCLA and USC.
- Frequently collaborated with John Michael Hayes while writing for the Suspense and Sam Spade radio programs during the early 1950's.
