The success of the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building has exposed a new generation of viewers to the comedic brilliance and appeal of Steve Martin. But the actor-writer has been appearing onscreen since the late 1960s – and performing even before that, to smaller audiences, as a kid magician at the newly opened Disneyland.
His journey from shy, showbiz-obsessed youth in Southern California to stand-up sensation and (probably still shy) comedy legend is told in Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces, directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville.
“For years, people had asked Steve about doing a documentary. He always had said no,” Neville commented during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders: Documentary + Unscripted virtual event. “I think a combination of having a daughter and of Covid, perhaps, made him, like all of us, kind of think about everything in our lives. A group of documentary filmmakers, producers, and archivists has written a series of guidelines on how they believe filmmakers should — and should not — use generative AI in their documentary movies.
While the AI guidelines for many entertainment folks may go something like this: “never, ever, a billion times no,” the reality is that generative AI has already crept into documentary filmmaking and is likely here to stay. An organization called the Archival Producers Alliance has outlined its best practices for filmmakers when it comes to handling consent, being transparent, and preserving history and truth.
“We recognize that AI is here, and it is here to stay. And we recognize that it brings with it potential for amazing creative opportunities,” APA co-founder Jennifer Petrucelli (“Crip Camp”) said at the IDA’s Getting Real event on Wednesday. “At the same time, we want to really encourage people to take a collective breath...

There are entire generations that have no idea that Steve Martin was a stand-up comedian. They may recognize him as one-third of the trio that’s turned Only Murders in the Building into a streaming hit, or the long-suffering patriarch of the Father of the Bride movies, or maybe as that guy with the funny mustache who was in that one thing with Beyoncé (i.e. 2006 Pink Panther reboot). Some might have watched Parenthood or Planes, Trains and Automobiles with their parents when they were younger. He’s the celebrity who,...

Steve Martin is an actor, writer, producer, and musician, known among the masses for his brilliant comic skills. Considered one of the best in business, he became popular for his absurdist and offbeat comic routines, that made him one of Saturday Night Live‘s favorites, having hosted the sketch comedy show a total of 16 times, only one behind Alec Baldwin, who has the highest number, with 17 hosting stints.
Steve Martin in Only Murders In The Building
Steve Martin recently released a two-part documentary on his life by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville. Steve!, the documentary, is a reflection of life instead of being what he thinks it could be about. He is a one-man show – sometimes a two-man routine – but his charisma and hold over the subject is unparalleled.

Unlike many celebrity-driven documentaries, Morgan Neville’s “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in Two Pieces” about the writer and comedian wasn’t deliberately made as a marketing device tied to a new TV series or movie. The two-part docu is also not your traditional career-encompassing overview of Martin’s life. Instead Neville, who garnered an Oscar in 2014 for “20 Feet From Stardom,” created feature-length installments called “Then” and “Now” that are told from two points of views using two different formats. “Then” chronicles Martin’s early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at age 35. “Now” focuses on Martin’s present day life, retracing the transformation that led to newfound happiness in his art and personal life.
Neville began filming “Steve!” in spring 2021 after meeting Martin for lunch to discuss the possibility of making the docu. “We had a great conversation,” says Neville. “I think one of...

“My whole life is backwards,” muses Steve Martin during the second “episode” of Morgan Neville’s Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in Two Pieces.
The point that Martin is making stems not from some Benjamin Button-style anomaly, but from his contention that he has gone from being riddled with anxiety in his 30s to achieving contentment and happiness in his 70s.
While I would posit that this isn’t all that remarkable — “Finding wisdom and peace with age” seems ideal and not unusual — there’s truth to Martin’s bigger point. Biopics and bio-docs tend to have familiar arcs that allow us to reconcile the contradictions of complicated lives; Martin’s biography has no such arc.
Neville’s approach, in the annoyingly titled documentary that I will henceforth only call Steve!, is to bifurcate Martin’s life.
The 98-minute “Then” looks at the origins of Martin’s comic style — a...

Exclusive: The production outfit behind Netflix’s Prince Andrew feature Scoop is working with Sarah Lancashire on an “ambitious, contemporary returning series” that Lancashire will star in.
Lighthouse Film & Television is teaming with Lancashire’s recently launched Via Pictures on the show, we can reveal, which Lighthouse co-founder Radford Neville teased is a “research heavy project inspired by real characters.”
Conversations with networks have already begun and Lancashire will star, contradicting reports that emerged earlier this week that she has retired from acting.
Lancashire launched Via Pictures with husband and former BBC and Banijay UK boss Peter Salmon last year upon the conclusion of Happy Valley, one of the corporation’s biggest dramas of the past decade.
“When we set up Lighthouse in 2019 we talked to Sarah about developing something specifically for her,” added Neville. “In the interim she has set up Via and towards the end of last year...

Morgan Neville is an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winning documentarian who has a knack for going deep inside the worlds of various entertainment and media figures in memorable films like the Academy Award winner 20 Feet From Stardom about backup singers; Won’t You Be My Neighbor about Fred Rogers; The Best Of Enemies focused on the rivalry of William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal; Roadrunner which delved into the world of Anthony Bourdain; and films on everyone from Orson Welles to Keith Richards and many others. But in getting Steve Martin to finally commit to a documentary on his life and extraordinary career as groundbreaking stand up comedian to movie star, author, playwright, and musician, Neville got even more than he could have imagined. After HBO’s Defending My Life, Rob Reiner’s recent terrific documentary on a similar comic and film genius Albert Brooks, this insightful and fascinating...

Steve Martin has had so many phases in his nearly 60-year career that he’s now recognizable for at least a half dozen different projects. Younger fans who primarily him from his popular Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” might not be aware that he once starred in multiple hit family comedies, like “Father of the Bride” or “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Others who are familiar with Martin’s extensive film work might not necessary know he’s a gifted banjo player who has frequently played with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. But anyone born in the last three decades can be forgiven for not knowing that Martin was once the biggest stand-up comedian in America. In the ’70s, he played to enormous sold-out stadium crowds and his act became so well known that it eventually embedded itself within the American consciousness. Many if not most people of a certain age...

Steve Martin is a comedy legend, plain and simple. And he deserves your attention. Long before he became the star of beloved family comedies like "Parenthood" and "Father of the Bride," he was a massive stand-up comedian, selling out shows, firing off hilarious albums, and cracking up the likes of Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." He even made such big waves at "Saturday Night Live" that many people mistakenly believe he was once a full-fledged cast member. It's the kind of career open mic comics dream about. Now we're going to find out how Steve Martin made it happen.
Apple TV+ is releasing a two-part documentary from A24 and Tremolo Productions called "Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces." What's particularly interesting about this two-part approach is that it will take a look at Steve Martin's life and career from two different perspectives.

As is the case with Roman Reigns in modern WWE, sometimes a champion’s reign lasts way too long. But the opposite can also be true. Somebody could get a big title win and only hold onto the belt for a few weeks, possibly even days, before being forced back to square one. For one reason or another, there are a select group of wrestlers in WWE who dropped the title way earlier than they should have.
On this list of wrestlers who needed more time with their championships, we will not be including those who were forced to vacate due to injury. It seems too easy an answer, so here’s an honorable mention for Finn Balor, Daniel Bryan, Edge, and the rest of the champs who had to vacate the belt for physical reasons.

Pharrell Williams has come a long way from producing music as part of the Neptunes and as part of the rap/rock band N.E.R.D. Williams went on to do some of the most catchy, ear-wormy pop hits that radio and television would play ad nauseam. Pharrell would also break through into movies as he composed music for such films as the Despicable Me movies, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Hidden Figures. Additionally, his pop hits would be all over countless trailers and be featured in movies like Trolls Band Together and Sing 2.
Recently, Pharrell took to his Instagram to announce that his life story will be told in Lego form in a film from Focus Features, titled Piece by Piece. The film is due to hit theaters on October 11. Death In Paradise returns to our screens in February, and the BBC have released plot and cast details.
Death In Paradise has been one of the BBC’s most successful dramas in recent years. Created by Robert Thorogood in 2011, the show’s thirteenth series is about to hit our screens. It has seen Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon and current detective Ralf Little solve a remarkably high number of murders for such a small Caribbean island.
Last year, Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman starred in spin-off Beyond Paradise, which paired him with Not Going Out star Sally Bretton and relocated the action to Cornwall. Proving popular with viewers, it recently returned for a Christmas special and a second series will be broadcast this year.
A further spin off, entitled Return to Paradise was announced last year, with action taking place in Australia.

One of the more pleasant surprises of "Avengers: Endgame" was the early reveal that this was going to be a time travel story. The MCU had never really done time travel prior to this point, and for obvious reasons they would never really do it again. Messing with time can cause massive plot holes, after all, so it's best to do it sparingly. But as for how "Endgame" handled it? It's hard to complain. It gave fans an opportunity to go back through some of the series' greatest hits, allowing us to look back at how much our characters — particularly Captain America and Iron Man — had grown over the years. The storytelling choice was, by basically any measurement, a massive success.

Watch as many documentaries as I do, and you’re bound to see the Chicago White Sox’s notorious Disco Demolition Night come up in a wide variety of contexts. Sometimes the 1979 fiasco is used as a case study in racism and the marginalization of Black voices in music. Sometimes it’s used as a case study in homophobia.
In Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg’s new documentary The Saints of Second Chances, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, Disco Demolition Night is reduced to an origin story. Yes, Mike Veeck is remorseful that anybody has read negative subtext into the ill-fated promotion, but he makes it clear that he just wanted to impress his father and pack a stadium. Like several dark things in The Saint of Second Chances, any other insinuations get lost in a sea of stylistic flourishes and heart-tugging button pushing.

Life is, thankfully for us, full of second chances. Humans are forever figuring out how to get it right, but there’s no denying that the universe finds a way to be on our side when our hearts are in the right place. There lies the emotional core of Jeff Malmberg and Morgan Neville’s new Netflix documentary “The Saint of Second Chances.”
The film is a mirror for those of us who have ever had to pick up the pieces after massive failure, and with life being the way it is, it isn’t going to be very hard for this film to find people who develop a cathartic connection to it. “The Saint of Second Chances” is a once-in-a-lifetime documentary for sports that meshes the ordinary with the extraordinary in a way that only the messy hands of time can. When "I Am Legend" was released in 2007, most people watching in crowded theaters probably never thought they'd see its awesome vistas of a deserted, windswept Manhattan in real life. Those images were chilling enough originally but take on an extra poignancy when revisited in a pandemic-era world, now that we've all gotten a glimpse of what an apocalypse might actually look like (albeit one without dodgy CGI mutants).
It's also strange watching a Will Smith movie after you-know-what at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. When it came out in 2007, "I Am Legend" was Smith at his most relatable, charismatic, and assured, carrying a blockbuster with a 150 million price tag almost single-handed with his sheer presence and star power. His journey to being taken seriously as an actor was an arduous and not always successful one, but the film marked the sweet spot in his transition. It's a big tentpole sci-fi movie with...

ABC is going all-in on The Conners, as the Roseanne spinoff series has been given a 22-episode order for its current fifth season. According to Deadline, the news was shared during the October 7 taping of the popular sitcom. The 22 episodes make this the biggest season of The Conners ever — the first season, which came after the Roseanne revival crashed and burned, consisted of just 11 episodes, while Seasons 2 -4 included 20 episodes each. The show also added a new character in its latest episode. It was revealed that Louise and Neville’s estranged brother Aaron died of a heart attack, leaving behind a 17-year-old son named Caleb, played by Shameless‘ Ethan Cutkosky, who reunited with fellow Shameless alum Emma Kenney (Harris Conner-Healy). The Conners premiered on October 16, 2018, following the cancellation of Roseanne in May of that year due to controversial comments made by Roseanne Barr on Twitter. The opening of The Conners Season 5 Episode 1 made me cringe at the way Darlene and Ben made fun of Jackie. It simply wasn't funny.
After the lovely double-wedding, it felt particularly mean and made me wonder if the writers had gone tone deaf with their humor.
Thankfully, that wasn't the case.
The insensitive jibes were the trigger that led to Jackie overcompensating to prove she and Neville were really in love.
Of course, all that boisterous lovemaking would have been far less effective at annoying Darlene if there had actually been two separate bedrooms in the cabin.
All I could think when Ben was holding the old bar of soap with the hair wrapped around it from the bathroom was how much Darlene must have wished she'd held on to those airline tickets to Hawaii.
Even more humor about sharing the space would have been fun, but Nevile and Jackie's squeaky bed was effective.
