We’ve seen Groundhog’s Day as a slasher with Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Life as a slasher with It’s a Wonderful Knife, Freaky Friday as a slasher with Freaky, and Back to the Future as a slasher with Totally Killer. Next in the “this movie, but it’s a slasher” line-up is Departing Seniors, which mixes the high school slasher set-up with elements from Stephen King’s The Dead Zone. Dark Sky Films will be giving Departing Seniors a limited theatrical and VOD release on February 2nd, and with that date right around the corner a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of actress Clare Cooney, Departing Seniors was written by actor Jose Nateras and centers on high school student Javier, who doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular kids as a queer Mexican-American.

Former WWE superstar (and Ufc fighter) Cm Punk fields a starring role in the horror movie, Girl on the Third Floor.
Cm Punk, a.k.a. Phil Brooks, has been fielding what might be one of the most publicized career transitions in history ever since the caustic-but-popular former WWE Champion abruptly abandoned the pro wrestling scene in early 2014, leaving an enduring trail of (non-scripted) controversy behind him. Besides banking some written work with Marvel Comics, his long-touted try as an Mma fighter in the Ufc led to two emphatic losses. However, a headlining role in a horror movie, called Girl on the Third Floor, might lead Punk toward new success as a movie star.
Brooks is joined in the Girl on the Third Floor cast by Trieste Kelly Dunn, Elissa Dowling and newcomer Sarah Brooks.

As scary as a cabin in the woods can be, one of the most disturbing backdrops for a film can be the college culture, where horrors that are all too real sometimes take place. Such is the case in Natalie Leite’s M.F.A., which made its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival (read Heather's review here) and has now been acquired for Us distribution by Dark Sky Films.
Press Release: New York, NY (June 8, 2017) - Mpi Media Group announced today that it has acquired all rights in the U.S. to M.F.A., a critically acclaimed powerful thriller starring Francesca Eastwood in a stand out role. The film, from female director and female screenwriter, takes on the searing current issue of sexual violence on campus. SXSW premiere to debut in autumn.
Mpi Media Group has picked up all Us rights from Visit Films to M.F.A. starring Francesca Eastwood and will distribute through its Dark Sky Films label.
Natalia Leite directed the drama about sexual violence on campus from a debut screenplay by Leah McKendrick.
M.F.A. stars Eastwood as art student Noelle who is sexually assaulted by a classmate and confronts her attacker, leading to an altercation that results in his accidental death.
When Noelle discovers she is one of many sexual assault survivors on campus, she takes justice into her hands and becomes a vigilante.
McKendrick and Clifton Collins Jr. also star in the film, which premiered earlier this year at SXSW and will open through Dark Sky this autumn.
Mpi’s Nicola Goelzhaeuser brokered the deal with Visit Films president Ryan Kampe.

Halloween may be the favorite time of the year for many horror fans, but that doesn’t mean independent filmmakers should release their horror movies in late October. Though Halloween used to be an ideal time for scarier films opening in limited release, many distributors today are avoiding the last week of October like the plague.

The partners have hired Ted Geoghegan to direct the follow-up to his acclaimed SXSW 2015 selection We Are Still Here. Mpi has begun talks with international buyers at the Afm.
Satanic Panic charts a delivery girl’s night of terror as she encounters a satanic cult among the leaders of an affluent neighbourhood.

“Equal parts supernatural horror and survival thriller, the film hinges on smart, funny dialogue and a clever, surprisingly badass female hero,” said Geoghegan.
“A snarky, splattery takedown of the one percent, it places a trod-upon heroine up against the literally soulless societal upper crust. The banter and blood come fast and furious, and we’re hoping to leave very little time to breathe between gasps and gags.”

Casting will begin shortly on the project that reunites Geoghegan (pictured in woollen hat) with producer Travis Stevens and Greg Newman. Grady Hendrix writes the screenplay.
“We Are Still Here was incredibly well received by both critics and audiences...
