Own: Oprah Winfrey Network has set a Wednesday, August 14 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt premiere date for its anticipated new drama series “David Makes Man,” from Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (“Moonlight”) and Warner Horizon Scripted Television.
An Oscar to his credit, his script for Netflix’s Steven Soderbergh drama “High Flying Bird” drawing high praise, and his Broadway production “Choir Boy” having wrapped up a successful run in March, playwright and screenwriter McCraney continues to impress with his initial foray into television with the deeply personal “David Makes Man.”
Inspired by the writer’s impoverished youth in Florida, the milieu naturally calls to mind “Moonlight,” and even borrows some of the film’s stylistic touchstones, bathing images in evocative colors, accompanied by a melancholic score that sets the lyrical tone.

"Listen, I know the streets are calling, but you must find a way to rise above it." Netflix has released an official trailer for a new biopic film titled Roxanne Roxanne, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Roxanne Roxanne tells the true story of New York rapper and musician "Roxanne Shanté" Gooden, who at only the age of 14 became one of the first female MCs in the rap world. Newcomer Chante Adams plays Roxanne Shante, and the full cast includes Nia Long, Mahershala Ali, Elvis Nolasco, Kevin Phillips, Shenell Edmonds, and Adam Horovitz. This seems like a great follow-up and the East Coast answer to the film Straight Outta Compton, telling a very different story of a badass young Mc from Queens. I don't remember hearing much about this at Sundance, but it seems like it's worth a watch anyway. Here's the official trailer for Michael Larnell's Roxanne Roxanne,...

Every detail of American Crime may have changed in its second season, but creator John Ridley's intent remains the same. Just as in the first season, Ridley wants to start conversations, exploring themes without offering the common, definitive answers we expect from network TV. Once again, he's more interested in the effects of a crime than the crime itself. That said, this season feels even more ambitious than the first. Dozens of shows have tried to get into the mind of the criminal or the cop, but few can deftly examine the ripple effect of illegal behavior — or even the accusation of it. American Crime is among those few. Class, sexuality, race, assault, social media, and bullying will collide this season, which features several actors from last year, but in different roles, including Timothy Hutton, Felicity Huffman, Lili Taylor, Elvis Nolasco, and Regina King. They're joined by an excellent...

When "American Crime" debuted a year ago, I was as impressed by creator John Ridley's ambition in what he was trying to accomplish with the anthology miniseries' first season as I was skeptical about his ability to execute certain aspects of his vision. Still, there was enough there to admire — committed performances (by Timothy Hutton, Felicity Huffman, Regina King, W. Earl Brown, and more), gorgeous direction and cinematography, a willingness to incorporate difficult social issues into a network drama — that I expected to see it through to the end. But admiring something and enjoying it are two different things, and after watching one episode past the initial batch that ABC had made available to critics before the season, I kept letting "American Crime" slide further and further down my to-do list, even during (relatively) slower periods later in the year. The thought of returning to it felt like homework,...

With the same tense, staccato rhythm that introduced its flawed, fascinating debut, the trailer for Season 2 of "American Crime" (ABC) tackles yet another fraught subject: rape.
