The tale of ‘Mahabharata’ is an all time classic, and one of the greatest epics of all time that needs little detailing. The biggest epic of all time, ‘Mahabharata’ is now set for a new stage adaptation at the UK premiere at London’s Barbican Theatre this fall.
The legendary Hindu epic that packs with it some of the greatest thought changing and detailed philosophies, a powerful story of a great war and spiritual ideas, is presented by the Canadian theatre production ‘Why Not Theatre’ and had its world premiere in Canada back in March at The Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
According to Variety, the production is presented in two parts and narrated by a storyteller (Miriam Fernandes). ‘Karma’ (part 1), is the origin story of the rival Pandava and Kaurava clans. In ‘Dharma’ (part 2), a great battle destroys the planet and the survivors are left behind to rebuild.

Before she sang “Galavaaant” across the castles and fields of England, actress Karen David was filming in London for Atul Malhotra’s Brit Indie film Amar, Akbar & Tony. Amar, Akbar & Tony are three best friends who all are from different backgrounds. It is about the camaraderie and love between these three friends through trials, tribulations, predicaments they face and the happy times as they grow up and come of age.

Stacey got the chance to catch up with Karen and had a fun, fabulous chat about the challenges playing Meera, what she thinks is so special about this Indie film and more! Enjoy!
I know when we last talked, you were telling me that filming was in the middle of your wedding?...

It does so through the eyes of three childhood friends looking for love in multicultural London. Interracial romance, violence, sexuality, family, love and loss are themes that are explored and shared by the three main protagonists – Amar, Akbar and Tony, over a ten-year period – as the trio deal with the absurdities and unpredictability of life.

British South Asian drama has been associated with sparkly saris and arranged-marriage melodrama for too long. It's time to acknowledge the full breadth of its talent
Eight years ago this month, I was in rehearsals at Birmingham Rep for Behzti (Dishonour), a play by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti that depicted a rape in a Sikh temple. By 20 December the production was forced to close early, as a result of violent protests. The police were unable to guarantee the safety of the actors, audience or theatre staff, so the management had no option but to stop the show. It was a terrifying and deeply upsetting time, made even more tragic to us – a company of South Asian artists. Quite apart from the death threats against the playwright, there was no other play on at the time by a South Asian writer. This made the enforced silence even more painful. We were struggling to get our voices heard.

In Gurinder Chadha’s ‘Hai Marjawaan!’ (‘It’s A Wonderful Afterlife’ in English), ghouls rise from the dead and mess around with ladles of curries and gravies in what could easily be termed the most messy climax of desi-gone-ballistic cinema.
By the time the masala curries, chutneys, gravies and other acidic edibles begin to fall across a singing-dancing gathering of NRIs at a big fat Punjabi wedding, the plot is too far gone to be called eccentric or even bizarre.

May 8, 2010:Subhash K Jha Speaks to It’s A Wonderful Afterlife’s Goldy Notay
What was it like working with Shabana Azmi and Gurinder Chadha? A bit like 3 generations of women bonding over the same film, wasn’t it?
I was an aficionado of both, so it’s been a double dream to work with them. Shabana put my nerves to rest from the start. We hugged, and then off we went eating jalebis together and talking about feminism, relationships, politics and love. She’s jaw droppingly amazing as an actress, scrupulous in her work ethics and very, very funny. Gurinder has such incredible.

Film: It’s A Wonderful AfterlifeCast: Shabana Azmi, Goldy Notay, Sendhil RamamurthyDirection: Gurinder ChadhaRating: ** Few Indian actors can match Shabana Azmi’s resumé . Across four decades, she’s done about 130 films, and outshone most of her contemporaries at her range itself. I suspect this must still be one of those rare films when she may have walked on to the set wondering what to do with herself. Her character is so bizarrely layered, you can at best credit her experience alone, that she doesn’t come across entirely out of sorts on the big screen. She plays one, Mrs Sethi, an over-protective mother, ...

Gurinder Chaddha who gave us the wonderful Bend It Like Beckham (2002) seems to have got it all wrong this time. Well at least where humour is concerned. Designed as a black comedy, her latest release It’s Wonderful Afterlife fails to evoke neither any laughter nor any emotions.
The film is about the widowed Mrs Sethi (Azmi) who is worried.

Shabana Azmi, the veteran bollywood actress who enacts the part of Mrs. Sethi in Gurinder Chadha.s latest offering .It.s a Wonderful Afterlife., has infused life into the character of the mother who is always on the lookout for a suitable match to marry off her fat and not so beautiful daughter, Roopi(played by Goldy Notay). Shabana essays the role with such perfection that the audiences will instantly identify with her and would recall their neighborhood aunty or some other relative similarly desperate to get her daughter or son settled in matrimony. Even the murders that Shabana Azmi commits through over- spiced curry of the relatives of grooms who had rejected her daughter, does not make her look inhuman and an object of hatred. In fact, the veteran actress successfully keeps the human touch to all of her actions, which successfully induce laughter in this funny comedy. However,...

British-Indian filmmaker Gurinder Chadha is known to challenge the stereotypes in cinema with her unusual portrayals of characters in films such as "Bhaji on the Beach" and "Bend it like Beckham." She does it with élan and a lot of commercial success. Therefore, not many eyebrows are being raised at her next offering, "It's A Wonderful Afterlife," which opens in theatres across India on Friday.
It is evident from the promos that have been doing the rounds on television that the movie is about an overweight British girl of Indian origin, whose mother just wants to see her get married. At the heart of this film is the Indian obsession with marriage but Gurinder has dealt with it in a light-hearted manner, somewhat like the "Ealing" comedies, those lightly satirical movies from the post-World War II era that depicted the British society of those times. Then there are ghosts too,...

Life During Wartime (15)

It doesn't matter if you don't remember too much about Solondz's 1998 hit Happiness beyond taboo subjects and squirmingly dark comedy, since the characters are played by completely different actors. It sort of fits, as they've all relocated to Florida, seeking a new start, but they shouldn't get their hopes up. The treatment is similarly unforgiving and uncomfortable, often captivatingly so, and happiness is as distant a prospect as ever.

Sally ("Happy-Go-Lucky") Hawkins in a high-concept comedy from Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha. By Peter Bradshaw
Gurinder Chadha has near-legendary status for her barnstorming popular classic Bend It Like Beckham – but this latest misses the goal. Doting Indian mum Mrs Sethi (Shabana Azmi) has furiously murdered all the people who have been nasty to her daughter Roopi (Goldy Notay), whom she has tried to marry off, and these victims come back as ghosts. All the potential for drama and comedy is sacrificed to this totteringly high concept. Sally ("Happy-Go-Lucky") Hawkins plays Roopi's best mate, and she is at the centre of a spoof of a well-known horror film that should have been a five-second visual gag but goes on and on for what seems like 30 minutes.
