He became fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) after working at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
"Big River" at the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City was nominated for a 2004 Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for Best Revival.
In September 2006, he became the director of theatre and musical theater at the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in Washington, D.C.
As of December, 2020, serving as Senior Advisor for Program Innovation at the NEA.
